Galerias Pacifico, shopping and booking excursions, Buenos Aires

This fantastic historical shopping mall is located in the Retiro district of Buenos Aires on Florida Street. It reminds us a bit of the large department stores of Paris, Le Printemps and La Fayette. Also in Buenos Aires has the Galeria Pacifico a glass roof, murals and domes.

From the late 19th century this was an office building for the Argentinian railroad company. Only in 1992 it became a shopping mall for leading brands and luxury products. There are a few stands for tourists where you can buy tickets for Tango Shows, what we took advantage off. Travel agencies are selling day trips in and around Buenos Aires but also multi day excursions to the Iguazu Falls and El Calafate glacier. We did not have enough time for this but we would recommend everyone that travel to Argentina to visit these two wonders of nature. When we go back we will certainly go there.

The center dome has a mural collection painted by five different artists. It almost gives you the feeling of a museum. We have never seen such a large glass roof. It is hard to capture the greatness of this mall on pictures.

Church of Our Lady of the Pillar, Recoleta, Buenos Aires

This church and basilica is famous because its monks founded the Recoleta Cemetery. Our Lady of the Pillar is the patroness of Spain. The church is a typical example of colonial architecture and one of the oldest buildings of Buenos Aires.

Inside the church you find several wooden and plaster statues of monks. Side chapels contain gold leave decorated alters. The tile art of the port shows how important a harbor is for the economic position of a large city like Buenos Aires.

Super walk at Ecological Reserve Costanera Sur, Buenos Aires

This nature reserve is very small but located at the edge of the city between the modern Madero district and the Atlantic Ocean. At the southern entrance you see the Nereids Fountain. The large grass fields you see on the pictures are in fact lakes. The water is however not visible due to the dense grasslands. A bit like some parts of the Everglades.

Costanera Sur has a big variety of plants, flowers and birds. We met many bird-watchers and people jogging which seems to be a popular activity. It is certainly a better place to do sports than the hectic city center of Buenos Aires.

On our walk we felt completely relaxed, away from the city. Occasionally you are reminded how close the skyscrapers are when a few trees make place for an open space. An ideal location to make a few pictures and the nature reserve looks very safe.

Eva Perón and La Recoleta Cemetery, Buenos Aires

La Recoleta Cemetery was one of the top places of Buenos Aires we had on our visiting list from the moment we were planning our holiday. It is one of the top cemeteries in the world and makes us think of Père Lachaise in Paris.

It starts already with the gate which looks like a temple. Just above the entrance it reads, rest in peace. Once you enter, you are blown away. You can't find one normal grave. These mausoleums are big like chapels or even little churches. Family members frequently visit the mausoleums. Inside behind glass you see coffins laying on top of each other, pictures, flowers, plants and some chairs to sit down.

La Recoleta Cemetery is very big and a maze, it is difficult to locate a tomb if you haven't been here before. Almost all tourists want to see the grave of Maria Eva Duarte de Perón, more known as Eva Perón or Evita. She was the most popular First Lady of Argentina. She was also a very active politician, coming up for the working class and women in particular. She was the spiritual leader of Argentina. Unfortunately she died of cancer at the age of 33. Her name and life is known worldwide and we are regularly confronted with the song of the musical Evita, "Don't cry for me Argentina". It is now more than 60 years ago but everyone still remembers Eva Perón.
