Slow Food Italian Restaurant Spiga D'oro, Boortmeerbeek

Spiga D'Oro is one of the best Italian restaurants we have ever visited and will certainly return here. They work with fresh products and hold on to Italian traditions. The owners lead the kitchen as well as the restaurant. You can feel the passion for their products and wine. It is a family business with a big heart.

We went to the restaurant with friends and selected the following from the menu: scallops, King Crab tartare with tomato, an Italian meat preparation and a beef tartare. These were the starters. As a main course we went for the deer and shrimp pasta. We had a great evening.

Flashback to prostitution history in Ketchikan, Creek Street

We start to wonder if Alaska was the center of the world sex industry at the start of the 20th century. Every town we visit has historical brothel museums. Was the USA so much more liberal hundred years ago?

Creek Street is a fantastic place. The small wooden houses, previous brothels, are now souvenir shops. Everything is located on a boardwalk next to the river. An ideal setting for a walk when it is not raining again.

At Dolly's House you can participate in a Historic Red Light Tour, the sign reads: where both men and salmon came upstream to spawn. Haha. It bit further there is an unpaved path leading to the back entrance of the brothels. It has the official name "Married Mans Trail". By the way, I was here together with my wife and wearing protection, a huge plastic bag covering my upper body. It rains a lot in Ketchikan, a rainforest area in Alaska. We have to do something to protect our camera equipment.

Totem Heritage Center, Ketchikan

The highlight of this museum is a collection of tall, more than 100 years old totems. You can visit these enormous, wood carved poles, in the first room. The faces and animals carved in the wood are clearly visible, the colors disappeared in time. This is completely different compared to young totems.

On a picture of Haida Village from 1902, we see just a few houses and giant totems. It looks like every house has his own totem.

The modern wood carvings and masks in the museum are interesting and have colors. Tribes also display items used in day to day life like boats, shoes and knives.

General Impressions of Ketchikan, Alaska

Our ship and the Radiance of the Seas are docking next to the small town of Ketchikan. The end of the spring and summer represent the high season for these inhabitants and this is the period they collect their yearly income. We booked a flight called Misty Fjords to see the fjords and lakes. Unfortunately due to weather conditions, the trip flight was cancelled. There were too many low hanging clouds.

It was raining the whole day and we started visiting shops. Here you find local products like wood carvings, towels and T-shirts with images of Alaska and the famous Ulu knife. Since this is the salmon capital of the world, we had to have a look at the salmon market.

Later in the afternoon, water planes flew on and off. When sailing out we even saw a big jet plane from Alaska Air departing. We wonder what all these passengers come for in this little village.
