Wijchen Swingt 2012 – Our competition report and video Championship Class

After our dance lesson yesterday, we tried it out on the competition in Wijchen. Our teachers and coaches Herman & Michele were present some last minute hints. There were 14 couples at the start of the B-class and we qualified directly for the first eight, so no redance for us. In the semi-final our dancing was also good and we were pleased with the progress. As already mentioned last week we feared the result and didn’t make the final. We became 8th out of 14 couples. The video of our dancing will be published tomorrow.

The open Championship class competition was special with 18 couples. A few newly formed couples danced for the fist time and some from the past came back. This resulted in a surprise final. We hope you enjoy the video of this super dancing.

Na onze dansles van gisteren, probeerden we onze nieuwe elementen uit in de competitie in Wijchen. Onze leraars en coaches Herman & Michele Lak waren aanwezig voor enkele laatste tips. Er kwamen 14 paren in de B-klasse aan de start en we kwalificeerden ons na de eerste ronde bij de eerste acht paren, geen herkansing voor ons dus. In de halve finale was ons dansen goed en waren tevreden met de vooruitgang. Zoals reeds vermeld vorige week vreesden we voor het resultaat in deze wedstrijd en bereikten we de finale niet. We werden 8ste van 14 paren. De video van ons dansen wordt morgen gepubliceerd.

De open hoofdklasse was zeer speciaal met 18 paren aan de start. Enkele nieuw gevormde koppels dansten voor de eerste keer in Wijchen en ook kwam er een gestopt paar weer terug. Het eind resultaat was een verrassende finale. We hopen dat jullie genieten van deze video met super dansen.

Loden-Frey shopping since 1842, Munich

Imagine a family shop in clothing that exists already 170 years. If you stay this long in business, you must be unique and provide quality. The Loden-Frey shop is located at the Frauenkirche Dom in a nice building with a covered walking gallery. It was late in the evening in the store was closed but I could not avoid taking some pictures. The glass entrance door is decorated with puppets as door handles. The shop windows are very colourful and the clothing is special, a combination between classic dress code and the playfulness of Bavaria. The question is however, would I wear a lederhosen with a jacket?

Beeld je een familiewinkel in die al 170 jaar bestaat. Als je zaak zo lang open kan blijven, moet je wel uniek zijn en kwaliteit leveren. De Loden-Frey winkel is gelegen aan de Frauenkirche kathedraal, in een mooi gebouw met overdekte wandelgalerij. Het was reeds laat in de avond maar ik kon het niet nalaten enkele foto’s te nemen. De glazen inkomdeur is versierd met beeldjes als handvatten. De etalages zijn zeer kleurrijk en de kledij is uniek, een combinatie van klassieke kledij met het speelse van Bayeren. De vraag is echter, zie je mij al lopen in een lederhosen met klassiek vestje?

Our best overall restaurant experience, Hostelerie St. Nicolas

For our 100th article of Belgium on this blog, we had to write something special. Like all Belgians, we love food and restaurants, so the choice was easy. We just visited restaurant St. Nicolas in Elverdinge, a two star Michelin restaurant, with the amazing chef Franky Vanderhaeghe and hostess Sandra Nys. This time we were so impressed that after our visit we wrote a positive letter to the Michelin Guide. This restaurant must be a candidate for a third star. The Maitre explained restaurant St. Nicolas works with classic products with a modern presentation.

The amuses are just fantastic and super creations of the chef. The first starter is served in three different preparations, which is a special concept we have not seen before. We will try to describe the plates which tasted excellent and are super pieces of art. This is a top restaurant and without doubt my favourite place, above all the three stars I have visited until now. A culinary travel in the unknown which stole my heart. The wine selection with all courses was excellent.

Voor ons 100ste blog artikel over België wilden we toch over iets speciaal schrijven. Zoals alle Belgen houden we van eten en restaurants, de keuze was dus simpel. We hebben net restaurant St. Nicolas in Elverdinge bezocht, een twee sterren Michelin zaak, van de ongelooflijke Chef Franky Vanderhaeghe en gastvrouw Sandra Nys. Deze keer waren we zo onder de indruk dat we de Michelin Gids met een positieve brief hebben aangeschreven. Dit restaurant moet zeker kandidaat zijn voor een 3de ster. De Maïtre vertelde dat restaurant St. Nicolas werkt met klassieke producten met een moderne presentatie.

De amuses zijn gewoon fantastisch en super creaties van de Chef. Het eerste voorgerecht wordt geserveerd in drie verschillende bereidingen, een speciaal concept dat we nog niet eerder gezien hadden. We gaan proberen de gerechten te beschrijven die betoverend zijn van smaak en echte kunstwerken zijn. Dit top restaurant is zonder enige twijfel mijn favoriete restaurant, zelfs boven alle drie sterren restaurants die ik tot nu toe heb bezocht. Een culinaire reis in het onbekende dat mijn hart heeft gestolen. De wijn selectie bijn alle gerechten was uitstekend.

The amazing paintings of Vatican Museum, Rome

We were so impressed with all the paintings that we were not totally blown away from the Sistine Chapel. The paintings that are exposed here are in an excellent state and from painters like Raphael, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Dali, and many other grandmasters. The colours are so overwhelming, the characters in the stories almost jump out of the frame, they look alive. The ceilings are a treasure and incomparable to anything we have seen before. This is not only the case in one room but in the whole museum, it doesn’t stop.

We waren zo onder de indruk van de schilderijen in het Vaticaans Museum dat we niet omver geblazen werden door de impressies in de Sixtijnse kapel. De schilderwerken hier tentoongesteld zijn in uitstekende staat en gemaakt door kunstenaars als Raphael, Leonardo Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Dali, en vele andere grootmeesters. De kleuren zijn overweldigend, de personages in de verhalen lijken wel uit het werk te springen, ze lijken tot leven te komen. De plafonds zijn schatten en onvergelijkbaar met alles dat we tot nu toe gezien hebben. Dit is niet het geval in één kamer, maar in alle zalen van het museum, het houdt gewoon niet op.

Saint Peter Basilica the biggest church in the world, Vatican City

The Saint Peter’s Basilica is probably the most famous monument of Vatican City. Almost each time the pope is on television it is from inside the Saint Peter’s Basilica. This is a major Basilica or a basilica which is higher in grade than all other basilicas in the world. Inside there is place for 60.000 believers and the dome has an altitude of 132m.

In this church you find the graves of several popes but also the grave of Saint Peter who was crucified by the feared and cruel emperor Nero around the year 65. He underwent the same faith as Jesus in Jerusalem. They started working on this church in 1506 and it took 120 years to complete it. The dome was designed by Michelangelo but made bigger than on the original plans. In front of the crypt entrance, you see Bernini’s alter, an amazing piece of art like all his statues and fountains in Rome. The treasures in Vatican City are so mind blowing that it can not be comprehended via a text or pictures. You have to visit this mini state at least once in your life, independent if you are a believer or not.

De Sint-Pieters Basiliek is waarschijnlijk het meest beroemde monument in Vaticaanstad. Bijna iedere keer als de Paus op TV komt is het van uit de Sint-Pieters Basiliek. Dit is een major Basiliek, met name een basiliek hoger in rang dan alle andere in de wereld. Binnen is er plaatst voor ongeveer 60.000 gelovigen en de koepel is 132m hoog.

In deze kerk vind je de graftombes van verschillende pausen, maar ook van Sint-Pieter die werd gekruisigd in Rome door de wrede en gevreesde keizer Nero rond het jaar 65. Hij onderging hetzelfde lot als Jezus in Jeruzalem. Men begon te bouwen aan deze kerk in 1506 in het heeft 120 jaar geduurd om het te voltooien. De koepel werd ontworpen door Michelangelo maar werd hoger gebouwd dan de originele plannen. Voor de ingang van de pauselijke crypte, zie je Bernini’s altaar, een fantastisch kunstwerk net als zijn beelden en fonteinen in Rome. Je kan niet niet voorstellen via teksten of foto’s hoe ongelooflijk de schatten van Vaticaanstad zijn. Iedereen zou op zijn minst één maal in zijn leven naar Vaticaanstad moeten gaan onafhankelijk of je gelovig bent of niet.

This library is located in the Vatican Museum in Vatican City, Rome. It is a very old library which was founded in 1475. We liked it so much because of the wall and ceiling paintings which did not steal there name, the Sistine Hall. We could only see a part of it. Most of the library was closed for renovation works. The paintings are spectacular and more colourful than in the Sistine Chapel. The paintings in the Sistine Chapel were made by Michelangelo. In the Chapel we were not allowed to take pictures. The chapel was in fact the private praying room of the pope and each time the cardinals need to elect a pope they lock themselves into the chapel. When the white smoke comes out of the chimney of the Sistine Chapel, the new pope is known. When the smoke is black, the election has to the restarted.

Deze bibliotheek gevestigd in het Vaticaans Museum te Vaticaan Stad, Rome. Het is een zeer oude bibliotheek die werd opgericht in 1475. We vonden het zeer mooi omwille van de vele muur en plafond schilderijen. De bibliotheek heeft zijn naam niet gestolen, de Sixtijnse Bibliotheek. Het grootste gedeelte was afgesloten voor renovatiewerken maar de schilderijen waren heel indrukwekkend en kleurvoller dan in de Sixtijnse Kapel. De schilderwerken in de Sixtijnse Kapel zijn echter van Michelangelo, daar mochten we geen foto’s nemen. Deze kapel was in feite een privé bidkamer van de paus en iedere keer dat er een nieuwe paus moet verkozen worden komen de kardinalen hier in conclaaf. Wanneer er witte rook uit de schouw van de Sixtijnse Kapel komt is de nieuwe paus gekozen, bij zwarte rook moet er opnieuw gestemd worden.

Church of the virgin, with the first parish in the world, Civitavecchia

This church in Civitavecchia caught our attention because of the orange, brown and yellow exterior. On an information board it read that in 1856 the first parish in the world was established on this spot. The church is dedicated to the Virgin or Our Lady. In the church you find the grave of Alessandro Cialdi, the last captain of the Papal fleet. This is the fleet of the States of the Church which disappeared when Italy was founded in 1861. The interior is rather dark but expresses some kind of power, a strong impression. A unique church.

Deze kerk in Civitavecchia trok onze aandacht omwille van zijn oranje, bruine en gele gevels. Op een informatiebord kon je lezen dat hier de eerste parochie in de wereld werd opgericht in het jaar 1856. De kerk is toegewijd aan de Maagd of Onze Lieve Vrouwe. In de kerk ligt het graf van Alessandro Cialdi, de laatste kapitein van de Kerkelijke Staat. Deze kerkelijke vloot verdween bij de oprichting van Italië in 1861. Het interieur van de kerk is redelijk donker maar straalt kracht uit. Een unieke kerk.

Dens Gala 2012, no Final but happy with the progress of our dance quality

This NADB competition is Oss is always a special event. We like it because the organisation places 7 adjudicators around the floor to judge each class. The Championship Class even 11 adjudicators. We had almost no problems anymore with the injury and our dancing improved round after round. We didn’t make it to the final but were very happy with our dance performance of the Semi-Final. The end result was the 9th place out of 12 couples. It felt a lot better than in Klundert, two weeks ago. We don’t have a video of our on class but we publish a video of the Championship Class Final.

Deze NADB competitie in Oss is altijd een speciaal evenement. We houden er wel van daar de organisatie 7 juryleden langs de vloer plaatst voor iedere klasse. In de Hoofdklasse zelfs 11 juryleden. We hadden bijna geen problemen meer met de blessure en ons dansen werd beter ronde na ronde. Tot onze spijt bereikten we de finale niet maar we waren blij met ons dansen in de halve finale. Het eindresultaat was de 9de plaats op 12 paren. We kunnen geen video publiceren van onze eigen klasse, maar we hebben een opname van de finale in de Hoofdklasse.

General impressions of Civitavecchia, a major cruise harbour in Italy

Last September, we departed with the Celebrity Silhouette from Civitavecchia to Haifa in Israel. It is from the same port that the Costa Concordia departed for its last journey before it was grounded and sunk on Island del Giglio. This is a real drama and we feel sorry for all the passengers and the families of the victims. It makes you think because we followed the same route with the Silhouette, like many other cruise ships which departed from the Civitavecchia port. This accident will however not stop the cruising industry boom and it will certainly improve the safety procedures on cruise ships. For all people who depart from Civitavecchia in the future, we publish some impressions of this very nice city.

September laatstleden vertrokken we met de Celebrity Silhouette uit de haven van Civitavecchia naar Haifa in Israël. Het is van uit dezelfde haven dat de Costa Concordia is afgevaren voor zijn laatste cruise, die abrubt tot einde kwam op het eiland van del Giglio waar hij kapseisde. Het is een vreselijk drama en wij voelen mee met de passagiers en de familie van de slachtoffers. Het doet je toch nadenken, wij volgden dezelfde route met de Silhouette, net zoals zo vele cruise schepen die ook vertrokken uit Civitavecchia. Dit ongeval zal echter de groei van de cruise industrie niet tegenhouden, maar het zal wel de veiligheidsprocedures verbeteren. Voor iedereen die in de toekomst uit de haven van Civitavecchia zal vertrekken publiceren we enkele impressies van deze hele mooie stad.

The commercialisation of God, Maria and religion, Scherpenheuvel

The modern world is commercial, this is a fact. With money, you can buy a lot. Not everything but enough. The priests and regilieus people have also seen an opportunity. Sometimes you have to pay a fee to enter a church and we thought that the House of God was open for everyone. In the Notre-Dame of Paris they have a real store inside the Cathedral. In the Church of the Holy Selpuchre of Jeruzalem, priests sell services on the tomb of Jesus. Here in Scherpenheuvel we saw a special store with statues of Maria, Jesus, Jozef, priests, angels, candles and many more. We think this is a special store that only a few of you have seen.

De moderne wereld is commercieel, dat is een feit. Met geld kan je bijna alles kopen. De priesters en religieuze mensen zien hier ook hun commerciële mogelijkheden. Soms moet je inkom betalen voor het betreden van een kerk en wij die dachten dat het Huis van God open was voor iedereen. In de Notre-Dame van Parijs hebben ze een echte winkel in de kathedraal. In de kerk van het Heilige Graf te Jeruzalem verkopen de priesters hun diensten op het graf van Jezus. Hier in Scherpenheuvel hebben we een zeer uitzonderlijke winkel gezien vol beeldjes van Maria, Jezus, Jozef, priesters, engelen, kaarsen en veel meer. We denken dat zo’n uitzonderlijke winkel nog niet door velen van u gezien is.

The Via Dolorosa route through the woods of Scherpenheuvel

Starting at the Basilica of Scherpenheuvel, you find a walking path through the woods where for each station of the Via Dolorosa a small monument has been placed. On the way you pass the Maria Hall which is a place for religious gatherings. Next to it you see a statue of Father Damien, a Saint from Belgium (Jozef De Veuster) who dedicated his lived caring for people with leprosy on the island of Moloka’i in Hawai. But back to this walk in the woods following the improvised route which should resemble the Via Dolorosa where Jesus carried his cross uphill to the place of crucifixion. Here in the woods you also walk uphill until you reach a big cross with the image of Jesus. It was an intriguing walk, thinking back of our visit to the Via Dolorosa in Jerusalem. The only difference was that in Israel it was a real confrontation with the origin of Christianity and all emotions that go together with it. On the pictures, you see Kristel, her brother Kristof and our dogs.

Aan de Basiliek van Scherpenheuvel start een wandelpad door de bossen waar voor ieder station van de Via Dolorosa een klein monument is opgericht. Onderweg kom je de Maria Hal tegen, een plaats voor religieuze bijeenkomsten. Naast de hal staat een standbeeld van Pater Damiaan, de Heilig verklaarde priester uit België (Jozef De Veuster), die zijn leven wijde aan de verzorging van melaatsen op het eiland Moloka’i in Hawaï. Maar terug naar onze wandeling door het bos, de geïmproviseerde kruisweg volgend, waar Jezus het kruis naar boven droeg voor de kruisiging. Hier in de bossen wandel je ook een helling op, tot aan de top, waar je een heel groot kruis staat met het beeld van Jezus. Het was een intrigerende wandeling die doet terugdenken aan ons bezoek aan de Via Dolorosa in Jeruzalem. Het enige verschil is dat in Israël, het de echte route was waar het Christendom is ontstaan en dit gaat gepaard met vele emoties. Op de foto’s zie je Kristel, haar broer Kristof en onze honden.

The dome with the stars on the Basilica of Scherpenheuvel

The Basilica of Scherpenheuvel in Belgium has a special dome because it is covered with golden stars. It is an old church dating from the 17th century. This small church is the most famous pilgrim place in Belgium. People come here to pray and honour Our Lady. Why at this place? In the woods surrounding this area, many centuries ago, a Maria image hanging in a tree was worshiped by the local community. A man, who tried to steal it, was completely paralysed and could only move again when someone else returned the Maria image back in the tree. This was a miracle. More and more pilgrims come to this church which was awarded the Golden Rose by Pope Benedictus XVI. It is an amazing piece of art as recognition for a unique Basilica in Scherpenheuvel.

De Basiliek van Scherpenheuvel in België heeft een speciale koepel die volledig bedekt is met gouden sterren. Het is een redelijk oude kerk, daterende uit de 17de eeuw. Scherpenheuvel is het meest beroemde bedevaartsoord in België. Mensen komen hier om te bidden voor Onze Lieve Vrouw. Waarom hier? In de bossen in dit gebied hing eeuwen geleden een Maria beeldje, de lokale bevolking kwam het aanbidden. Tot op een dag een man het wou stelen, hij kon zich niet meer verder bewegen en was verlamd. Toen men het beeldje terug plaatste in de boom werd hij weer normaal. Dit was een mirakel. Meer en meer pelgrims bezoeken deze plaats en de Basiliek kreeg de Gouden Roos van Paus Benedictus de 16de. Jumeirah Mosque – Sheikh Mohammed Centre for Cultural Understanding

We were very happy to see this board for Cultural Understanding, and the Open Doors, Open Mind sign. Until now we were not allowed to enter any Mosque in Dubai and we tried three times. Also here the doors were closed for non-Muslims. Only four days in the week at 10:00 in the morning with a guided tour, you are allowed in. We were not pleased with this. Dubai claims to be open, trying to attract more and more tourists but doesn’t allow non-Muslims to look into their mosques. This is a pity. The cultural understanding doors are only open for four hours a week. The mosque itself from the outside was very beautiful. We wrote 50 articles on this blog about the UAE, it was a great experience of a country with a friendly population.

We waren zeer blij dit bord te zien met het opschrift Cultureel begrijpen, open deuren en open geest. Tot nu toe waren we echter nog niet toegelaten in de drie Moskeeën die we bezochten in Dubai. Ook hier bleven de deuren gesloten voor niet Moslims. Slechts vier dagen per week om 10:00 ’s morgens worden westerlingen toegelaten onder begeleiding van een gids. We waren hier niet tevreden over. Dubai beweert open te zijn, trachten meer toeristen aan te trekken, maar ze laten geen niet Moslims toe in hun Moskeeën. Dit is zeer spijtig. De deuren van het Cultureel begrip zijn slechts 4 uur open per week. De Moskee zelf was mooi aan de buitenzijde. We schreven 50 artikelen op deze blog over de VAE, het was een uitstekende ervaring in een land met vriendelijke mensen.

In the Mall of the Emirates, you find Ski Dubai, an indoor ski slope of 85m high and 400m long. There are five different slopes with various difficulty levels. What we find amazing is that around the Indoor Ski hall, you have several restaurants, enjoy dinner while watching people ski. We took our pictures from the Salmontini restaurant through the window. This reduces the quality of the pictures but there was no other option. We particularly liked the snow park with bobsleds, tubes and snow caverns. The temperature in the ski hall is just below zero, we can not imagine how powerful the cooling system must be when it is extremely hot outside. This article must be a nightmare for people who are worried about the environment but the kids love Dubai Ski. By the way, how do you like the Arab guy with his long green winter coat?

Ski Dubai, vind je terug in de Mall of the Emirates. Het indoor park heeft een afdaling van 85m hoog en 400m lang. Er zijn vijf verschillende bergjes met elk hun moeilijkheidsgraad. We vinden het fantastisch dat er rond de skipiste goede restaurants gevestigd zijn, van waar je een uitstekend zicht hebt op de sneeuwpret. We namen onze foto’s van uit het restaurant Salmontini. Wel van achter het venster waardoor de kwaliteit van de foto’s iets minder is. In het bijzonder hielden we van het sneeuwpark met zijn bobsleeën, banden, ballen en sneeuw grotten. De temperatuur in de hal is juist onder het vriespunt. We kunnen ons niet inbeelden hoe sterk de koelingsinstallatie moet zijn om de extreem hete temperaturen te kunnen overwinnen. Dit artikel moet echt een nachtmerrie zijn voor milieu bewuste mensen onder ons, maar de kinderen houden van Dubai Ski. Tussen haakjes, wat vinden jullie van de Arabische man in zijn lange groene winterjas?

We already knew from Ballroom Dancing and Formation dancing that Russia is the world top. People start young, are hard and train a lot. There are only a handful of countries that are so disciplined and committed to sport. We were five days in the Westin Beach Resort in Dubai and every single day, the girls were in the pool for hours and hours. Training on physical condition, warming up, swimming laps, practising routines, new elements… It was very impressive. We took a few pictures and looked up some videos on YouTube that we now share with you. The first video is from the European Championship 2010, that they won and the second video is about the training sessions. We ourselves danced Ballroom Formation about 13 years ago but on a very low level compared to this, it brings back memories.

We wisten reeds van ons Ballroom dansen en Formatiedansen dat Rusland de wereldtop is. Mensen starten op jonge leeftijd, zijn hard en trainen veel. Er zijn slechts een handvol landen die zo gedisciplineerd en toegewijd zijn aan hun sport. Gedurende de vijf dagen dat we in het Westin Hotel te Dubai waren, trainden de meisjes iedere dag vele uren. Conditie training, opwarming, baantjes trekken, routines oefenen, nieuwe elementen uitproberen... Het was zeer indrukwekkend. We trokken enkele foto’s en keken naar video’s op YouTube. De eerste video is toen ze Europees kampioen 2010 werden en de tweede video is een training sessie. Wij hebben zelf aan formatie dansen gedaan, ongeveer 13 jaar geleden maar op een veel lager niveau als dit, het roept herinneringen op.

Rhodes Mezzanine the best British restaurant we ever visited, Dubai

This is one of several restaurants of British Chef Gary Rhodes. Mr. Rhodes gained several Michelin Stars for three restaurants he managed until he started his own restaurant imperium. In two of his restaurants in London, “Rhodes Twenty Four” and “Rhodes W1” he also has a Michelin star. The restaurant Rhodes Mezzanine in the Grosvenor House of Dubai is based on the same concept but here the Michelin Guide is not active yet.

When we made reservations, we heard it was British cuisine and this frightened us a bit. We had rather poor experiences with average quality restaurants in London. The Maître-d ensured us it was a top restaurant with French influence. This sounded a lot better in our ears. The restaurant interior is very modern and has style, tables are far away from each other which gives the customer more privacy, we like this.

The Chef started with amuses of crispy melted cheese, a goose liver praline, and a Croque Monsieur of salmon. The tone was set because it was excellent. As a starter we choose the Terrine of Foie Grass with eel and high quality ham, it came with an apple dressing. Our second started was the Turbot with leek, mashed potatoes and a light soya sauce. As main course we had a fantastic Filet Mignon with spinach, onions and pasta flavoured with mushrooms and truffle. The wine selection could have been a bit better but the food was just excellent. We would recommend this restaurant to all gourmet lovers.

Something we didn’t know yet during our visit but Mr. Gary Rhodes is also a celebrity dancer. In 2008 he featured in the popular UK program of Strictly Come Dancing, he was the lucky one who was allowed to dance with Ms. Karen Hardy. (picture from PopsugarUK).

Dit is één van de restaurants van de Britse Chef Gary Rhodes. Dhr. Rhodes had reeds verschillende Michelin Sterren in drie restaurants die hij heeft geleid alvorens zijn restaurant imperium op te starten. Twee van zijn eigen Londense restaurants, “Rhodes Twenty Four” en “Rhodes W1” hebben ook een Michelin Ster. De Rhodes Mezzanine in het Grosvenor House in Dubai is gebaseerd op hetzelfde concept maar hier in de Emiraten is de Michelin Gids nog niet actief.

Toen we gingen reserveren hoorden we dat dit een Britse keuken was. Dit schrok ons wel wat af want onze algemene restaurantervaringen in London waren niet te best. De Maître verzekerde ons dat dit een top keuken was met Franse invloeden. Dit klonk al veel beter in onze oren. Het interieur is zeer modern maar stijlvol, tafels staan ruim uit elkaar wat de klant meer privacy geeft, we houden hier wel van.

De Chef begon met amuses van krokant gesmolten kaas, een ganzenlever praline en een tosti van zalm. De toon was gezet want de smaken waren uitstekend. Als voorgerecht kozen we een terrine van eendenlever opgewerkt met paling en ham, het werd geserveerd met een appel dressing. Ons tweede voorgerecht was een Tarbot met prei en puree in een lichte sojasaus. Als hoofdgerecht kozen we de fantastische Ossenhaas met spinazie en ajuintjes samen geserveerd met een potje pasta op smaak gebracht met paddenstoelen en truffel. De wijnselectie kon iets beter zijn maar het eten was gewoon fantastisch. Wij kunnen dit restaurant aan elke gourmet liefhebber aanbevelen.

Iets wat we nog niet wisten toen we dit restaurant bezochten was dat Gary Rhodes een beroemde danser is. In 2008 nam hij deel aan het populaire Britse programma Strictly Come Dancing. Hij was de gelukkige die aan de zijde stond van de mooie Karen Hardy. De foto’s komt van PopsugarUK.

Just a few hundred metre land inwards from the popular Jumeirah beach, you find the Dubai Marina. This is the playground of the ultra rich with their super yachts. There was a shop selling some of these pleasure boats and most of them were extremely expensive, a few million euro! The Marina has many outdoor restaurants because it rains only a few days a year. Around the harbour and river, they built a walking promenade. Everywhere you look, you see modern skyscrapers and buildings under construction. One of our favourite places in this area is the Grosvenor House with its excellent restaurants. From the Dubai International Marine Club, you have a spectacular view on the Infinity Tower, the highest building in the world with a 90º twist. The 80 stories tall building should be completed during 2012.

Enkele honderd meter landinwaarts van het populaire Jumeirah Beach, vind je de Dubai Marina. Dit is de speeltuin van de ultra rijken met hun super jachten. Er was een winkel die enkele van die boten verkocht maar de meeste waren extreem duur, enkele miljoenen euro's! The Marina heeft vele open lucht restaurants want het regent hier slechts enkele dagen per jaar. Rond de haven en de rivier werd een wandelpromenade gebouwd. Overal zie je moderne wolkenkrabbers en gebouwen in opbouw. Eén van onze favoriete gebouwen is het Grosvenor House met zijn uitstekende restaurants. Van op de Dubai International Marine Club, heb je spectaculair zicht op de Infinity Tower, het hoogste gebouw ter wereld in een twist van 90º. Het zal 80 verdiepingen tellen en wordt afgewerkt gedurende 2012.

Ladies Night is a very popular marketing concept used by almost every major hotel and bar in Dubai. After diner in the Mall of the Emirates, we went to the 5 star Kempinski Hotel. Like in many luxury hotel you see super cars, here we saw a white Ferrari. In the 1897 bar, Kristel was offered two glasses of Premium Bubbly drinks, as advertised on the Kempinski website. I took a glass of white wine. The atmosphere in the bar is warm and chic. Next to drinks, they are also offering cigars and light meals which looked very good. We didn’t eat because we just came from the restaurant. When publishing this article, the Ladies Night in the 1897 bar was on Wednesdays.

Ladies Night is een zeer populair marketing concept dat wordt gebruikt door bijna ieder groot hotel en bar in Dubai. Na het diner in de Mall of the Emirates, gingen we naar het 5 sterren Kempinski Hotel. Zoals aan vele luxe hotels zie je meestal super auto’s, hier zagen we een witte Ferrari. In de 1897 bar kreeg Kristel 2 glazen schuimwijn aangeboden zoals beschreven op de Kempinski website en ik nam een glas witte wijn. De bar is chique en heeft een warme atmosfeer. Naast drankjes worden er ook cigaren en lichte maaltijden geserveerd die er zeer goed uitzagen. We besloten niets te eten daar we juist van het restaurant kwamen. Toen we dit artikel publiceerden waren de Ladies Nights in de 1897 bar op woensdagen.

Lebanese Restaurant Wafi Gourmet in the Dubai mall attracted our attention with their nice interior. In Dubai you find many Lebanese restaurants and we heard positive comments. So we were brave and tried it. The menu card was very difficult for us, we didn’t understand it. The waiter guided us through the restaurant where most of the products are visible for customers. It was a good experience, we started with a Tabouleh, a spicy fish salad and a salad from nuts and dried tomato. As main course we had sate from garlic and spicy chicken, garlic lamb, and lamb with pistachio nuts.

Libanees restaurant Wafi Gourmet in de Dubai Mall trok onze aandacht met hun mooi interieur. In Dubai vind je vele Libanese restaurants en we hoorden enkel positieve commentaren. We waren moedig en probeerden het. De menukaart was te moeilijk voor ons, we begrepen er niets van. De gastvrouw heeft ons echter de producten getoond in het restaurant. Het was een goede ervaring. We begonnen met Tabuleh, een pikante vissalade en een salade van noten en gedroogde tomaten. Als hoofdgerecht kozen we voor kip in look en met pikante kruiden, en voor lam in look en pistache noten.

We have already written an article about this 828m tall world record breaking building when we visited the observation deck. This time we are sharing a few pictures with you from the exterior. The reflection of the sun in the glass tower almost blinds you. The Burj Khalifa’s shape has been designed in separate rounded blocks each containing tens of floors. This design ensures that the building is not damaged or doesn’t get into balance problems during dessert storms or heavy wind from the sea. We end the article with a photo of the sun set.

We hebben reeds een artikel geschreven van het observatiedek op dit 828m hoge gebouw die de wereldrecordlijst aanvoert. Deze keer willen we enkele foto’s van de buitenkant met jullie delen. De weerspiegeling van de zon in de glazen toren verblind je bijna. De vorm van de Burj Khalifa werd ontworpen in verschillende ronde blokken die elk tientallen verdiepingen bevatten. Dit ontwerp zorgt ervoor dat het gebouw niet uit balans of beschadigd wordt door woestijnstormen of sterke rukwinden van op zee. We eindigen het artikel met een foto van de zonsondergang.

Mall of the Emirates from budget to exclusive shopping

We mainly like shopping malls for the architecture and the window shopping. It is nice to see how marketing experts try to influence customers to buy their products. The Mall of the Emirates has some nice statues, fountains, an atrium with a glass roof, and many exclusive design shops. We particularly liked the shop of Bvlgari, Ralph Lauren, and the chocolatier of Fauchon. You even had the option to buy a Porche Panamera Hybrid. The Persian carpets where spectacular. Next to all these expensive luxury shops, you also have budget shops and supermarkets. If you would like to eat something, you find cheap snacks in the two food courts and there are also some good restaurants. Good for an interesting afternoon when it is too hot.

Voornamelijk houden we van winkelcentra omwille van de architectuur en het bekijken van originele etalages. Het is verbazingwekkend hoe sommige marketing experts klanten beïnvloeden om hun producten te kopen. De Mall of the Emirates heeft mooie standbeelden, een fontein, een atrium met glazen dak, en vele exclusieve winkels. In het bijzonder vonden we de winkels van Bvlgari, Ralph Lauren en de chocolatier Fauchon zeer leuk. Je had zelfs de mogelijkheid een Porche Panamera Hybrid te kopen of een exclusief Perzisch tapijt. Er zijn ook budget winkels en supermarkten in het gebouw. Voor te eten, zijn er verschillende Food Courts en enkele goede restaurants. Een leuke namiddag uitstap als het te warm is.

Modern Financial District at the Sheikh Zayed Road, Dubai

The Sheikh Zayed Road is the main road of Dubai and the Emirates, it is more than 500km long. This 2 x 5 lane express way is the main route to Abu Dhabi. We were particularly interested in the part located at the Dubai Financial District. Here you find many skyscrapers and modern architecture. We took some nice pictures from the ground level. On recommendation of a tourist out of Bahrein, we visited the pool deck of the Four Points hotel. On the 46th floor we could take pictures of the Sheikh Zayed Road from about 150m altitude. As you can see there are still buildings higher. Due to the financial crisis, construction works on some buildings have been stopped. This is a pity.

De Sheikh Zayed Road is de hoofdweg van Dubai en de Emiraten, en is meer dan 500km lang. Deze 2 x 5 rijvakken expresweg is de manier om naar Abu Dhabi te reizen. Wij waren in het bijzonder geïnteresseerd aan het gedeelte gelegen in het Dubai Financial District. Hier staan vele wolkenkrabbers en moderne architecturale pareltjes. We namen enkele mooie foto’s van op de grond. Op aanbeveling van een toerist uit Bahrein, bezochten we het zwembad- en zonnedek van het Four Points hotel. Van op het 46ste verdiep konden we foto’s maken van op ongeveer 150m hoogte. Sommige gebouwen zijn nog hoger. Vanwege de financiële crisis zijn de werken aan verschillende gebouwen stopgezet. Dat is zeer spijtig.

We have been to many top restaurants in the world. Most of these restaurant experiences are extraordinary because of the cuisine. In the Buddha Bar, the cuisine is of very high quality but the real experience can be found in the style of the restaurant. The interior is rather dark, on the left side you have a glass wall facing the marina, red chandeliers light the room, in the middle you have an enormous golden Buddha statue, on the right there is a bar where they play live music from 22:30. The other decorations are from Japanese and Chinese origine. What type of food do they serve? Well we have to look in the Asian kitchen. As starter, we had a mixed sushi plate of excellent quality. As main course we had a Thai curry from Tiger Prawns and a Filet Mignon. They had a good choice of wine by the glass and the wine card was excellent.

After dinner, you have to go to the bar on the right side. Make sure you reserve for the restaurant table and the bar, without it you will not have a place. Today, on January 9, the Buddha Bar was the 9th popular restaurant of Dubai on Tripadvisor. For us this is one of the most special restaurants we have ever been to. If we have to recommend other restaurants in the world with an exceptional atmosphere, our top experiences are The Breeze in Bangkok and “Le Cinq” in Paris. The Buddha Bar in Dubai is in our top three atmosphere restaurants and in good company.

We hebben reeds vele top restaurants in de wereld bezocht. De meeste van deze restaurants zijn uitzonderlijk vanwege de gerechten. In de Buddha Bar is de kwaliteit van de gerechten enorm hoog maar de echte ervaring wordt verwezenlijkt in de stijl van het restaurant. Het interieur is redelijk donker, aan de linker zijde heb je een glazen muur met zicht op de haven, rode lusters verlichten de ruimte, in het midden staat een enorm gouden Boeddha beeld, en aan de rechterkant is een bar waar ze live muziek spelen vanaf 22:30. De andere decoraties in het restaurant zijn van Japanse en Chinese origine. Welke keuken wordt er geserveerd? Hiervoor moeten we naar Asië kijken. Als voorgerecht namen we een Sushi schotel van uitstekende kwaliteit,. Voor ons hoofdgerecht kozen we een Thaise Curry met gamba's en de ossenhaas. Ze hadden een ruime keuze wijn per glas en de wijnkaart was uitmuntend.

Na het diner raden we aan nog iets te drinken aan de bar. Zowel voor het restaurant en de bar dien je vooraf te reserveren. Vandaag, op 9 januari staat de Buddha Bar als 9de gerangschikt in de lijst van meest populaire restaurants in Dubai. Voor ons is dit één van de meest intrigerende restaurants die we hebben bezocht. Als we andere restaurants met een uitzonderlijke ambiance zouden aanbevelen in de wereld, zijn onze topervaringen, The Breeze in Bangkok en “Le Cinq” in Paris. De Buddha Bar is in onze sfeer top drie en in goed gezelschap.

Ballroom Dancing competition NADB – De Niervaert Cup – B-Class Adults

Our last competition was 6 weeks ago and we had a foot injury. Yesterday after talking to our choach, we decided not to cancel the competition but to participate. After the holiday period, it is always hard to start training again and build up the energy. The Niervaert Cup in Klundert was going to be a training day for us with the only goal to dance good given the circumstances. Some of the technical elements were executed correctly but the program didn’t go as smooth as it should. Our quickstep was the weakest dance. The complete result is not known yet but we became 4th out of only 7 couples. The next competition will be in Oss in two weeks time. We are convinced that our level will be better then. To end the article we add a photo of us taken by Edwin Verwoerd of Pingreply, it matches with the winter season.

Onze laatste competitie was reeds 6 weken geleden en we hebben nu een voetblessure. Gisteren hebben we de deelname besproken met onze coach, maar beslisten vandaag toch te dansen. Na een vakantie periode is het altijd moeilijk het trainingsschema weer op gang te krijgen en de energie op te bouwen. De Niervaert Cup in Klundert beschouwden we dan ook als een trainingsdag met als enige doel goed te dansen, rekening houdende met de omstandigheden. Sommige technische elementen werden correct uitgevoerd maar het programma liep niet zo vlot als normaal. De Quickstep was onze zwakste dans. De detail resultaten zijn nog niet bekend maar we werden 4de van 7 paren. Binnen twee weken doen we mee aan Dens Gala in Oss. We zijn er van overtuigd dat ons dansen dan van hogere kwaliteit zal zijn. Om het artikel af te sluiten voegen we een foto van ons toe genomen door Edwin Verwoerd van Pingreply, het past wel bij het winter seizoen.

The Westin Dubai Mina Seyahi Beach Resort

The Westin is the last hotel we stayed in during our holiday in the United Emirates. We decided to spend our last days relaxing on the beach, in the hotel garden and the swimming pool. Knowing ourselves, this was not for the whole day but at least a few hours in the morning and the afternoon. In between, we enjoyed lunch and a bottle of wine on the terrace. We selected the Westin hotel because of its swimming pools, these were just fantastic. The private beach of the hotel had views on the Jumeirah Palm and the Atlantic Hotel. Our room was spacious with all the luxury and comfort you can imagine, the bathroom had a large bath and a separate rain shower. The hotel was very good but expensive. But after staying in budget hotels for the first part of the holiday, we now spoiled ourselves with this 5 star palace.

De Westin is het laatste hotel waar we verbleven gedurende onze vakantie in de Verenigde Arabische Emiraten. We besloten van onze laatste dagen te genieten op het strand, de hotel tuinen en de zwembaden. Onszelf kennende, was dit niet voor de volledige dag, maar toch enkele uren in de morgen en de namiddag. Tussenin genoten we van een lunch en een wijntje op het terras. We kozen de Westin omwille van zijn zwembaden, deze zijn gewoon fantastisch. Het privé strand heeft zicht op de Palm Jumeirah en het Atlantis Hotel. Onze kamer was zeer ruim, met alle luxe die je kan inbeelden, de badkamer had een groot ligbad en een regendouche. Het hotel was uitstekend maar duur. Maar na ons verblijf in budget hotels gedurende het eerste deel van de vakantie besloten we ons eens te laten verwennen in een 5 sterren paleis.

The Emirate of Dubai is so rich that you see frequently exclusive cars in the street. We didn’t search for it but we took pictures of a Maserati, a Mercedes SLR, 2 Ferrari’s, 2 Rolls Royce’s, a Lamborghini cabrio, and a Porsche Panamera with diamonds as decoration. There seems to be no vandalism but the traffic is rather hectic so driving safely is a challenge. Luckily the fuel is almost for free, 20 euro cent a litre.

Het Emiraat Dubai is zo rijk dat je vele exclusieve auto’s in het straatbeeld ziet. We hebben er niet echt naar gezocht, maar we namen foto’s van een Maserati, een Mercedes SLR, 2 Ferrari’s, 2 Rolls Royce’s, een Lamborghini cabrio, en een Porche Panamera met diamantjes versiert. Er lijkt geen vandalisme te zijn in Dubai maar het verkeer is zeer druk en chaotisch, zo schadevrij rijden lijkt toch wel een uitdaging. Gelukkig is de benzine zeer goedkoop, ongeveer 20 euro cent per liter.

We discovered this mosque on 13th street by coincidence. It is a very nice building because of the architectural details: arches, symbols, minaret, entrance, and domes. The element that attracted us the most was the combination with the palm tree, the flowers and the green plants. The mosque looked very clean. We tried to go inside but the mosque was closed. A window stood open but inside of the building was empty. We assume the mosque is brand new.

We ontdekten deze moskee op de 13de straat bij toeval. Het is een zeer mooi gebouw vanwege zijn architecturale details: bogen, symbolen, minaret, inkom, en koepels. Het element dat ons het meeste aantrok was de combinatie met de palmbomen, de bloemen, en de groene planten. De moskee zag er zeer goed goed. We probeerden binnen te gaan maar de moskee was gesloten. Er stond wel een venster open maar de binnenkant stond bijna leeg. We gaan er van uit dat dit een recent gebouwde moskee is.

Indian restaurant Indego in the Grosvenor House Dubai

This is the first top restaurant we visited in Dubai. Today, on 6 January 2012, restaurant Indego is ranked the 7th popular restaurant in Dubai. The Grosvenor House at the Dubai Marina area is known for its good restaurants and bars.

This traditional Indian kitchen developed and run by the master ship of Vineet Bhatia has surprised us. We did not expect that the Indian cuisine could be so fine and with high level presentation. The Michelin Guide is not yet rating restaurants in Dubai but Chef Vineet Bhatia born in Bombay has already two restaurants with a Michelin Star one in London and one in Geneva. Both restaurants are called Rasoi Vineet Bhatia. By the way, he was the first Indian chef ever to receive a Michelin Star.

But back to the Indego in Dubai. After a pink soup amuse, I had as starter the trio of lamb, a piece with tomato and cheese, a kebab and a pastry bag with minced meat. Kristel had a trio of seafood, a crab cake, a tiger prawn and marinated salmon. As main course we had the prawn and chicken Tikka Masala. Between the courses, we had the opportunity to drink a glass of wine on their outside terrace which was nice with all the lights.

The maitre did everything possible to provide us an excellent service and succeeded in this. If we could give one recommendation is that the restaurant should also serve Riesling by the glass. It would match very well with some of the more spicy food. We certainly recommend Indego to all gourmet lovers who read this blog.

Dit is het eerste top restaurant dat we in Dubai hebben bezocht. Vandaag op 6 januari 2012, staat restaurant Indego op de 7de plaats in de populariteits- ranking van Dubai. Het Grosvenor House aan de Dubai Marina staat bekend om zijn goede restaurants en bars.

Deze traditionele keuken ontwikkeld en beheerd door het meesterschap van Vineet Bhatia heeft ons verrast. We hadden niet verwacht dat de Indische gerechten zo fijn van smaak en elegant bereid werden. De Michelin Gids beoordeeld nog geen restaurants in Dubai maar Chef Vineet geboren in Bombay heeft reeds twee restaurants van hetzelfde concept met een Michelin Ster. Beide restaurants noemen Rasoi Vineet en zijn gelegen in London en Genève. Hij was de eerste Indische Chef die een Michelin Ster kreeg.

Maar terug naar de Indego in Dubai. Na het proeven van een roze soep als amuse kwam ons voorgerecht. Mijn keuze ging uit naar het trio van lam, een stukje met tomaten en kaas, een stukje kebab en een deegzakje met gehakt. Kristel nam een trio van zeevruchten met een krabtaartje, een gamba, en een gemarineerde zalm. Als hoofdgerecht namen we een garnalen en kip Tikka Masala. Tussen de gerechten door hadden we de mogelijkheid een een glas wijn te drinken op het buitenterras, wat mooi was met alle lichtjes.

De maître deed er alles aan zijn klanten onberispelijk te bedienen waar hij goed in slaagde. De enige aanbeveling die we kunnen geven, is dat Riesling per glas ontbreekt op de wijnkaart, dit zo een mooie paring zijn met pikantere gerechten. We kunnen dit restaurant zeker aanbevelen aan alle gourmet liefhebbers die deze blog lezen.

Excellent experience in the Wild Wadi water park, Dubai

When you are in Dubai you have to go to the Wild Wadi. We enjoyed it so much and your kids will love it. We are a 100% sure.

Let’s start with the slides. The Wild Water Wadi goes around the park. It is a ride you do in a tube and it connects to 11 slides. The tube starts uphill, where it is blasted away with you in it. A strange and very good experience. My favourite slides where Tantrum Alley and Burj Surj where your tube flies through tornado’s and enters bowls & holes. These are high speed and high thrill slides. There is also a free fall speed slide.

Breaker’s Bay is a big heated wave pool where it is nice to have a swim or to relax. Children have to wear a swim jacket and some adults prefer to do so. The park also has two flowrider areas.

Staff is extremely friendly and life guards are present everywhere. They support you getting into tubes, they observe all swimming areas and slides. Security, safety and politeness is optimal.

The Arab culture is visible in the water park. The theme is based on the legend of Juha who travelled together with Sinbad the sailor. Some women wear a Burqini but women in bikinis are more than welcome. Changing rooms are connected to prayer rooms. The local people together with the tourists create a mix of culture and extreme fun. You need to visit this park but be careful, Wild Wadi is closed from 11 to 31 January 2012 for maintenance.

Wanneer je in Dubai op vakantie bent raden we je aan naar het Wild Wadi park te gaan. We hebben er zoveel pret gehad en jouw kinderen zullen er volledig weg van zijn. Hier zijn we 100% zeker van.

Laten we starten met de glijbanen. De Wild Water Wadi kronkelt zich rond het park en wordt verbonden met 11 glijbanen. Je waterband wordt door stuwend water naar boven geduwd met jou er in. Een rare maar zeer goede ervaring. Tantrum Alley en Burj Surj zijn twee nieuwe banen waar je met banden in tornado’s en kolken terecht komt. Deze glijbanen zijn echt sensationeel. Er is ook een vrije val glijbaan.

Breakers Bay’s, een groot verwarmt golfslag zwembad is fantastisch om in te zwemmen en te relaxen. Kinderen moeten een reddingsvest dragen, sommige volwassenen doen dit vrijwillig. Het park heeft ook twee flowriders om te surfen.

Het personeel is uiterst vriendelijk en redders zijn overal aanwezig. Ze helpen u in de banden en observeren alle zwembaden en riviertjes zodat niemand in de problemen komt. De veiligheid en vriendelijkheid is optimaal.

Ook de Arabische cultuur is zichtbaar in Wild Wadi. Het thema is gebaseerd op Juha, de medereiziger van Sinbad the Sailor. Sommige vrouwen dragen een Boerkini maar badpak en bikini zijn alom aanwezig. Iedere kleedkamer heeft ook bidkamers. De lokale mensen samen met de toeristen is een mix van cultuur en iedereen heeft zeer veel plezier. Het park is echt een bezoekje waard. Maar opgelet, van 11 tot en met 31 januari 2012 is Wild Wadi gesloten voor onderhoud.

The Dubai Metro has two lines. The Red Line from Jebel Ali to Rashidiya and the Green Line covering the area of Bur Dubai and Deira. The metro lines are always on time, is modern, clean and safe. Some stations are so beautiful with shiny marble, paintings, photos and chandeliers. You recognise the stations by an arched tunnel or a small brown tower with elevators. Many people make use of the Dubai Metro system and it is cheap. A card representation an electronic wallet is used to pay the fares.

De Dubai Metro heeft twee lijnen. De Rode Lijn van Jebel Ali naar Rashidiya en de Groene Lijn in de wijk van Bur Dubai en Deira. De metro rijdt altijd op tijd, is modern, proper en veilig. Sommige stations zijn zo mooi met hun marmer, schilderijen, foto’s en lusters. Je herkent de stations aan de boogingangen of de kleine torens met liften. Veel mensen maken gebruik van de Dubai Metro daar het zo efficiënt en goedkoop is. Je dient een kaart kopen als elektronische portemonee om je ritten te betalen.

The Jumeirah Beach hotel looks a bit like a pyramid and is one of the most luxurious hotels of Dubai. It has a private beach and is located next to the Wild Wadi waterpark and the Burj Al Arab. Around the hotel, you see several statues of camels in different colours: brown, mixed, bleu, gold…The atrium at the hotel reception looked amazing with a sharp blue piece of art crossing all floors. The salon area on the ground floor is very cosy. Almost all rooms are refurbished and look fantastic as you can see on the official website of Jumeirah Beach Hotel. This hotel is an icon in Dubai and we enjoyed our visit but this hotel was for us it too expensive and a bit isolated from other attractions in Dubai.

Het Jumeirah Beach hotel ziet er een beetje uit als een piramide en is één van de meest luxueuze hotels van Dubai. Het heeft een privé strand en ligt naast het Wild Wadi waterpark en de Burj Al Arab. Op het terrein van het hotel staan verschillende beelden van kamelen in verschillende kleuren: gemixt, bruin, blauw, goud.... Het atrium aan de receptie van het hotel is ongelooflijk met een blauw kunstwerk dat alle verdiepingen bestrijkt. Het salon op het gelijkvloers is zeer gezellig. Bijna alle kamers zijn gerenoveerd en zijn er fantastisch uit zoals je kan zien op de officiële website van het Jumeirah Beach Hotel. Het hotel is een icoon in Dubai en we hebben genoten van ons bezoekje, maar het hotel was echter te duur en te afgelegen voor ons om hier te logeren.

The Souk Al Bahar bridge with it towers is something that attracks attention. Around the Souk and the lake of the Dubai Fountains lake, you have a spectacular walking promenade. In the Souk you find many restaurants, shops and the Palace hotel. We personally went to the souk because we had seen a beautiful postcard with water, palm trees and the Burj Khalifa. It was taken from in the souk. After a 15 minute walk, we found the place which gave us an opportunity to make a good photo of this amazing view. It is the last picture of the article. We hope you like it.

De Souk Al Bahar brug met zijn torens is iets dat veel aandacht trekt. Rond de soek en het meer van de Dubai Fountains, vind je een spectaculaire wandel promenade. In de soek kan je winkelen, heb je vele restaurants en het Palace hotel. Persoonlijk waren wij hier met een ander doel, we hadden een postkaart gezien met palmbomen, water en de Burj Khalifa. Deze was genomen van in de soek. Na een kwartiertje wandelen vonden we de locatie. Dit gaf ons de mogelijkheid een soortgelijke foto te maken van deze unieke combinatie. Het is de laatste foto van het artikel. We hopen dat het in de smaak valt.

The year 2011 was for us the start of intense blogging with sometimes 50 articles per month. Making comments on articles of people on our blogrol, receiving comments and enjoying it. It was a year of travelling, sharing experiences and making blog friends. We promise to write even more in 2012 and share our pictures of places we visit. Our articles are written with a positive touch and we hope that the restaurant reviews bring you good dining experiences.

For the Ballroom dancers who visit our blog, we wish you good competition results in 2012, no injuries and lots of fun.

P.F. Changs has now several restaurants in Dubai. The visionary chef and co-founder Mr. Philip Chiang, is taking proud that they only work with fresh products in all his restaurants. The staff is very friendly and your waiter prepares his own personal dip sauce at the table. We had several times lunch at P.F. Chang’s in the Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates. Our preferred dish was without any doubt the Mongolian Beef. We also liked the chicken with cashew nuts, the dumplings, the fried rice, and the salt and pepper shrimps. The main courses are so big that it is better to share a plate with two. This is an excellent budget restaurant. You should certainly try it.

The interior of the restaurant is warm with wooden elements. As decoration, you have several statues of Terra Cotta Warriors inspired from the city of Xian. The real Terra Cotta army from the 3rd century B.C. is still being excavated. They have problems with the paint on the statues, when they are exposed to the air and light the colours disappear. Scientists and archaeologist try to find a solution now before they open all sites. We learned a lot about this when we were in Xian, China, visiting the ancient city and the Terra Cotta army during 2008. We thought this was a good opportunity to share some pictures of this amazing historical place on our blog.

P.F. Chang’s heeft nu verschillende restaurants in Dubai. De chef en ontwerper van dit concept Mr. Philip Chiang is er trost op dat het restaurant enkel werkt met verse producten. Het bedienend personeel is uiterst vriendelijk en de ober maakt zijn persoonlijke dip saus aan tafel. We zijn verschillende keren voor de lunch gaan eten in P.F. Chang’s in de Dubai Mall en de Mall of the Emirates. Onze favoriete schotel was zonder twijfel de Mongoolse steak. We hielden ook van de kip met cashew noten, de opgevulde deegzakjes, de gebakken rijst, en de garnalen in peper en zout. De hoofdgerechten zijn zo groot dat je ze best met twee personen kan delen. Het is een uitstekend budget restaurant, je moet het zeker eens proberen.

Het interieur van het restaurant is warm aangekleed met veel houten elementen. Als decoratie staan er verschillende Terra Cotta krijgers naar het voorbeeld van de stad Xian. Het echte Terra Cotta leger stamt uit de 3de eeuw voor Christus en wordt nog steeds opgegraven. Ze hebben problemen met de verf op de standbeelden, bij aanraking met lucht en licht verdwijnen de kleuren. Wetenschappers en archeologen proberen oplossingen te vinden vooraleer alle opgravingen te voltooien. We hebben er veel over geleerd toen we in Xian, China waren. Ons bezoek aan het Terra Cotta leger in 2008 is ons levendig bijgebleven. We dachten dat dit een mooie gelegenheid was enkele foto’s van Xian te plaatsen bij dit blog artikel.

The only 7 star hotel in the world, the Burj Al Arab in Dubai

The Burj Al Arab is sometimes called the Tower of the Arabs. It is a luxury hotel and some claim the most exclusive hotel in the world. We tried to visit it but this was not possible for non guests. The only opportunity you had was to make reservations for a drink in the bar or book a table in one of the restaurants. The hotel tries to keep non guest away from their facilities by making it extremely expensive. 50 euro for a drink and the restaurant prices are extremely expensive. We don’t mind paying a lot of money for a good restaurant but if you read the poor reviews on Tripadvisor, you think twice before paying these prices. We decided not to waste our money. The hotel was constructed in the shape of a sailboat. The smallest suite is 169m² big and the cheapest rate is around 1.000 euro a night. You could travel to the hotel with a Roll Royce or by helicopter, when you have this kind of money you don’t care anymore about a penny. The Burj Al Arab is not for us mortals but only for the super rich people of this planet.

De Burj Al Arab wordt soms ook de Tower of the Arabs genoemd. Sommigen beweren dat dit het meest luxueuze hotel ter wereld is. We probeerden het te bezoeken, maar je mocht enkel binnen als gast. De enige mogelijkheid was iets te gaan drinken in de bar of een tafeltje te reserveren in het restaurant. Het hotel probeert niet gasten buiten te houden. 50 euro voor een drankje aan de bar en dineren is extreem duur. We zijn bereid veel te betalen voor een goed restaurant, maar als je de commentaren op Tripadvisor leest van denk je wel twee keer na. We besloten ons geld niet te verspillen. Het hotel is gebouwd in de vorm van een zeilboot. De kleinste suite is 169 m² groot en het goedkoopste tarief per nacht is ongeveer 1.000 euro. Je kan naar het hotel gaan met een Rolls Royce of een helikopter, wie dit hotel kan veroorloven kijkt niet meer op een Euro. De Burj Al Arab is niet voor gewone stervelingen als ons, maar voor de superrijken der aarde.

Jumeirah Beach Corniche, the most beautiful skyline in the world

We heard Jumeirah beach is the place to be, the top beach of Dubai, but we found a better place with a similar sounding name, Jumreirah Beach CORNICHE. It is on the other side of the Dubai coast line in the direction of Bur Dubai. It has a paved area where you can ride a bike or skate. There is a curved pier, ideal for a walk and an unbelievable view of the white sand beach with the skyline of the Dubai Financial District. The beach has a large white sand area with nicely placed palm trees. We went back a second time to the Jumeirah Beach Corniche, hired two sun beds and an umbrella. The public beach was quiet, the sea calm, and we enjoyed reading a book. What a skyline, we have never seen a beach like this before. This Dubai attraction is free of charge, you should not miss this opportunity.

We hadden gehoord dat Jumeirah Beach het meest populaire strand is van Dubai, maar wij hebben iets beter gevonden met een soortgelijke naam, Jumeirah Beach CORNICHE. Het is aan de andere kant van de Dubai kustlijn in de richting van Bur Dubai. Dit strand heeft een verhard gedeelte waarop je kan fietsen en rolschaatsen. Op een in zee draaiende pier kan je wandelen, en je hebt er een ongelooflijk zicht op het zandstrand met de skyline van het financieel district. Op zeer zorgvuldig gekozen plaatsen staan sierlijke palmbomen. We gingen voor een tweede keer terug naar Jumeirah Beach Corniche en huurden twee zonnebedden en een parasol. Het publieke strand was rustig, de zee kalm, en we genoten van het lezen van onze boeken. Wat een zicht, wat een skyline, zo’n strand hebben we nog nooit gezien. Dit strand kan gratis worden bezocht, mis deze mogelijkheid niet, het is top.

We had high expectations of the Palm Jumeirah but it is very hard to see the shape and structure of the artificial island and beach. From the ground you can not really grasp the greatness of this amazing project. To visit the Palm Jumeirah and the Atlantis hotel, we recommend taking the metro to Nakheel (Red line) and than a bit further, you can take the Palm Monorail to the Atlantis hotel. On the monorail ride you get an impression of the curved beach line of each arm of the palm tree. There are still many parts of the island under construction and the main trunk of the palm tree contains enormous apartment blocks. On paper it looks a lot better than in reality but this doesn’t reduce anything of the fantastic concept and incredible engineering of the Palm Jumeirah.

The Atlantis Hotel has a high lobby with super art pieces, everything is in the theme of the sea. The luxury hotel seems excellent but was too expensive for our wallet. In the hotel you find the Lost Chambers with great fish tanks. They also have the most famous water park in Dubai called Aquaventure. In this hotel you can even swim with Dolphins.

We hadden hoge verwachtingen van het Jumeirah Palm eiland maar het was zeer moeilijk de vorm en structuur van het kunstmatige eiland en strand te zien. Van op de grond kan je de grootsheid van dit project niet waarnemen. Om de Palm en het Atlantis hotel te bezoeken, raden we aan de rode metrolijn te nemen tot aan Nakheel. Een beetje verder kan je de Palm Monorail nemen naar het Atlantis Hotel. Van op de monorail krijg je een indruk van de ronde strand armen van de palmboom. Er zijn nog vele plaatsen van het Palm eiland waar er gebouwd wordt en de stam van de palmboom is bebouwd met enorme appartementsblokken. Op papier ziet alles er beter uit dan in de realiteit maar dit verminderd niets aan het fantastische concept en de ongelooflijke ingenieursprestaties op de Jumeirah Palm.

Het Atlantis Hotel met zijn hoge lobby bevat super kunstwerken, alles in het thema van de zee. Het luxe hotel ziet er uitstekend uit maar te duur voor onze portemonnee. In het hotel vind je de Lost Chambers, of de verloren kamers, met zijn grote aquaria. Hier hebben ze ook het meest beroemde waterpretpark van Dubai, Aquaventure. In dit hotel kan je tevens zwemmen met dolfijnen.

In the Dubai Mall, you find many cosy and nice looking restaurants. Ping Pong is no exception; the restaurant has a modern classy look. Kristel loves Dim Sum so we tried the restaurant and were very pleased. They had a wide variety of dumplings: steamed, grilled, baked, and fried. We took the King Prawns, the scallop combination with mushrooms, the chicken with vegetables, crab, and a crispy prawn ball. For drinks, we selected the Coca Cola from a good year, 2011. Wine was not available. The staff was friendly and service very good. We certainly can recommend restaurant Ping Pong in the Dubai Mall.

In de Dubai Mall heb je vele gezellige en mooie restaurants. Ping Pong behoort zeker tot deze categorie. Het restaurant heeft een klasvolle moderne look. Kristel houdt van Dim Sum dus hebben we het restaurant geprobeerd. Ze hebben een grote keuze aan dumplings: gestoomd, gegrild, gebakken, en gefrituurd. We kozen voor de tijger garnalen, jacobsnoten met champignons, kip met groentjes, krab, en de krokante garnalen bal. Als drank namen we een Coca Cola van een goed jaar, 2011. Wijn werd er niet geserveerd. We kunnen dit restaurant Ping Pong in de Dubai Mall zeker aanbevelen.

Dhows, abras and freight boats on the Dubai creek

Dhows are traditionally fisher boats but you hardly see them here on the Dubai Creek. The wooden abra boat is now used for tourist purposes, for a trip up to Port Rachid and back down on the creek. Many tourists, about 20 million a year, can not resist the temptation; on both sides of the creek you see so many beautiful antique boats, mosques and interesting buildings. We didn’t do this, the requested price for such a dhow tour was far too expensive. We decided to walk and visit the side streets on the bank. The creek divides the old Dubai in two parts, the Bur Dubai and Dubai Deira. We particularly liked the freight ships. They have nicely painted decorations on the deck and are fully operational. You would think these vessels could no longer sail, they look so old and the wood is poorly maintained. Labourers from low income countries work very hard to unload the freight. They must have a very rough life.

Dhows zijn traditioneel vissersboten, maar je ziet ze heel weinig op de Dubai Creek. De houten abra boot wordt nu gebruikt voor toerist doeleinden, voor een tochtje naar Port Rachid en terug op de rivier. Vele toeristen, ongeveer 20 miljoen per jaar, kunnen niet aan de verleiding weerstaan. Aan beide kanten van de Dubai Creek zie je dan ook vele moskeeën, antieke boten en interessante gebouwen. Wij hebben hier geen gebruik van gemaakt, de vraagprijs voor een boottochtje was veel te duur. We besloten te wandelen en ook de zijstraatjes langs de oever te bezoeken. De Creek verdeeld het oude Dubai in twee delen, de Bur Dubai en Dubai Deira. We vonden de oude vrachtschepen heel indrukwekkend. Ze hadden mooi geschilderde decoraties op het dek en de boten zijn nog steeds operationeel. Ze zien er uit alsof ze elk moment zouden kunnen zinken, de verf bladert langs elke zijde af en het hout ziet er versleten uit. Zeelui uit lage loon landen werken hard om de vrachten te lossen. Ze moeten een zwaar leven hebben.

Most malls in Dubai are very modern but the Mercato Mall has a classic Italian style. The front façade looks very European and there is a small fountain at the entrance. The whole mall is covered by an arched glass roof. Large wall paintings display sceneries from Venice and the Canal Grande. I must say, the building has style but it is a simple replica of historical architecture of Europe. Inside the mall, you find many high quality clothing stores, a super market, a cinema and several places to sit down and have a drink. If you are in the area of the Jumeirah Beach Corniche it is worth a visit.

De meeste winkelcentra in Dubai zijn modern, maar de Mercato Mall heeft een klassieke Italiaanse stijl. De voorgevel ziet er Europees uit met een kleine fontein voor de ingang. De volledige winkelgalerij is overdekt met een gewelfd glazen dak. Grote muurschilderijen tonen afbeeldingen van de Canal Grande in Venetië. We moeten toegeven dat het gebouw stijl heeft, maar het is een eenvoudige replica van historische Europese gebouwen. In het winkelcentrum vind je kledingzaken van hoge kwaliteit, een grootwarenhuis, een bioscoop en verschillende plaatsen waar je rustig iets kan drinken. Als je in de buurt van Jumeirah Corniche bent is de Mercato Mall een bezoekje waard.

Visiting the Mall of the Emirates we saw on the first floor an attractive looking restaurant Salmontini. It specialises in salmon but also sushi and sashimi. The hostess stood at the door and had a sympatic appearance. Like a real sales women, she informed us of the Monday promotion menu. Sushi and sashimi from the card as much as you want. We like sushi so we were convinced and made reservations for dinner. This was the first restaurant in Dubai we dined in where they served wine. We selected a good Sauvignon Blanc from New-Zealand. The food was great and we visited this restaurants three times. Special thanks to our Russian waiter/sommelier who did a great job. A tip for ski lovers, the restaurant has views on the Dubai Ski slopes.

Toen we de Mall of Emirates bezochten zagen we op het eerste verdiep een attractief restaurant Salmontini. Het is gespecialiseerd in zalm maar ook in sushi en sashimi. De gastvrouw stond aan de ingang en had een sympathieke uitstraling. Als een echte verkoopster stelde ze het maandag promotie menu voor. Sushi en sashimi van de kaart, zoveel als je wil. We houden van sushi dus we besloten hier te dineren. Dit was het eerste restaurant dat we bezochten in Dubai waar men wijn inschonk. We kozen voor een goede Sauvignon Blanc uit Nieuw-Zeeland. Het eten was uitstekend en we kwamen hier drie maal terug. Hartelijk dank aan onze Russische ober/sommelier die een zeer goede gastheer was. Een tip voor skiliefhebbers, dit restaurant heeft een zicht op de Dubai ski afdaling.

From all locations in Dubai you see the Burj Khalifa, the highest building in the world with its 828 metres. In the Dubai Mall you can buy tickets to visit the building and go to the observation deck. When you reserve in advance on the internet site or at the reservation desk, you get the entry ticket for only 100 dirhams which is 20 euro a person. Every half hour people are allowed to enter, the first available place was five days later. It is very popular. Good that we reserved before our trip to Abu Dhabi. If you are only a few days in Dubai, you need to reserve via the internet site, if you don’t do this, you run the risk there will be no tickets available.

When entering the Burj Khalifa, you see several multimedia exhibits comparing the building to other tall constructions in the world. You can even project the Burj Khalifa against the skyline of other major cities in the world like Shanghai, New York, Paris…. On your way to the elevators you see modern art pieces and learn about the history of the Burj Khalifa construction and design phase. Once in the elevator it takes 45 second to reach floor 124, the highest observation deck in the world. Are we now at the top? No! There are still 80 floors above you. There are even people living on floor 160. From the open air observation deck you see the Dubai Mall, the fountains, the souks, the financial district, the desert, it is really impressive. The souvenirs are at reasonable prices. An amazing experience. If you can only visit one attraction in Dubai, it must be the Burj Khalifa.

People who believe gold is a safe heaven during the financial crisis have the opportunity to buy gold bars in a vending machine at the Burj. Bars are available in one ounce, 1gr, 5gr, 10gr… Some of them have the image of the Burj Khalifa melted on them.

Van op alle plaatsen in Dubai zie je de Burj Khalifa staan, het hoogste gebouw van de wereld met zijn 828 meter hoogte. In de Dubai Mall kan je tickets kopen om het gebouw te bezoeken en naar het observatieterras te gaan. Je dient wel de kaartjes vooraf te bestellen op internet of aan de reservatiebalie van de Dubai Mall, ze kosten 100 dirhams of 20 euro per persoon. Ieder half uur mogen mensen naar boven, maar de eerste beschikbare plaatsen waren pas voor vijf dagen later. Het is dus zeer populair. Goed dat we reserveerden voor ons bezoek aan Abu Dhabi. Als je dus maar enkele dagen in Dubai bent moet je op het internet reserveren, anders loop je het risico dat je dit mist.

Wanneer je de Burj Khalifa binnengaat kan je spelen met verschillende multimedia applicaties die het gebouw vergelijken met vele andere hoge constructies in de wereld. Je kan ook de Burj Khalifa projecteren tegen de skyline van andere wereldsteden zoals Parijs, New York, Shanghai.... Op weg naar de liften worden kunstwerken tentoongesteld en kan je leren over de bouw en ontwikkelingsfase van de Burj Khalifa. Eens in de lift, bereik je verdieping 124 in ongeveer 45 seconden en het observatie terras. Zijn we nu op het hoogste verdiep? Neen! Er zijn nog 80 verdiepingen boven ons. Er wonen zelfs mensen op het 160ste. Van op het open lucht dek kijken we neer op de Dubai Mall, de fonteinen, de soeks, het financieel district, de woestijn, ...het is gewoon ongelooflijk. De souvenirs die men verkoopt zijn aan schappelijke prijzen. Als je maar één attractie in Dubai kan bezoeken, moet het wel de Burj Khalifa zijn.

Mensen die geloven dat goud een veilige haven is gedurende de financiële crisis hebben hier de mogelijkheid goud te kopen uit een automaat. Baren zijn beschikbaar in gewichten van 1 ounce, 1 gr, 5 gr, 10 gr, .... Sommige goud staafjes zijn gesmolten met een afbeelding in de vorm van de Burj Khalifa.

Our first hotel was in Dubai Deira and now we move a bit to the west of this major city that is more than 50km wide. In the Al Barcha Dubai district close to the Mall of the Emirates, we reserved in the Citymax hotel. We still have to see so many things in Dubai that during the day we will be travelling, so that’s why we select again a budget hotel. We were extremely impressed with the Citymax, staff was friendly, the rooms are modern and clean, a flat screen TV, airco, rain shower, a bar with live music and very close to the Dubai metro. What more can you wish? Oh about the price it was only 50 euro a night. If you visit Dubai, stay in this hotel, you will not be disappointed.

Ons eerste hotel was in Dubai Deira en nu verhuizen we een beetje naar het westen van deze grootstad die meer als 50km breed is. In het Al Barcha Dubai district reserveren we in het Citymax hotel dicht bij de Mall of the Emirates. We willen nog zo veel plaatsen in Dubai bezoeken dat we gedurende de dag nooit in het hotel zullen zijn, hierdoor kiezen we terug voor een budget hotel. We waren ongelooflijk onder de indruk van het Citymax hotel: het personeel was vriendelijk, de kamers modern en proper, een plasma tv, regendouche, en een bar met live muziek. Het hotel is op loopafstand van de Dubai Metro. Wat kan je nog meer willen? Tussen haakjes, de prijs was slechts 50 euro per nacht. Als je Dubai bezoekt, verblijf in dit hotel, je zal niet teleurgesteld worden.

Rock climbing on a Royal Caribbean Cruise ship

The Brilliance of the Seas ship from Royal Caribbean has a climbing wall. It is located on the 13th floor in open air. We guess that wall itself is around 15 metres high. All passengers can use it free of charge and you get professional support. For me this was a real challenge because I had never done this before. Starting to climb at the age of 41? Being a Ballroom Dancer, this shouldn’t be a problem. With a bit of proud, I reached the top. My wife Kristel, had climbed before when she was a teenager. But that is a while ago. They say it is like riding a bike, you never forget. It is true, she was at the top within two minutes, it was like walking up the stairs. The support staff gave some rope and she abseiled down like a pro. Again I learned something new about my wife on this cruise, I didn’t know she could do this.

De Brilliance of the Seas Cruise schip van Royal Caribbean heeft een open lucht klimmuur op het 13de verdiep. We denken dat deze ongeveer 15 meter hoog is. Alle passagiers kunnen hiervan gratis gebruikt maken en je krijgt begeleiding. Voor mij was dit een grote uitdaging want ik had dit nog nooit gedaan. Beginnen met klimmen op de leeftijd van 41? Als Ballroom danser zou dit toch geen probleem mogen zijn. Met toch wat fierheid, bereik ik de top. Mijn vrouw Kristel, had reeds geklommen toen ze een tiener was. Dit is wel een tijdje geleden. Maar ze zeggen dat het is zoals fietsen, je verleert het nooit. Het was waar, binnen de twee minuten stond ze aan de top, het was net alsof ze op een trap wandelde. De man beneden gaf haar wat meer touw en ze kwam abgeseild naar beneden als een pro. Deze cruise heb ik weer iets nieuws geleerd van mijn vrouw, ik wist niet dat ze dit kon.

Enjoy a walk in the parks on the Abu Dhabi Corniche

Between the city with its skyscrapers and the Arabian Gulf you find the Corniche Road with its parks. It starts from the west with the Family Park, the Urban Park, Lake Park, Formal Park, and on the east Heritage Park. The whole walk takes around 90 minutes. The architecture of the buildings in combination with green parks, palm trees, artificial lakes and pieces of art looks great. The most impressive building was the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority but the Baynunah Hilton Tower Hotel is also praiseworthy. Abu Dhabi is a lot greener than Dubai as you can see on the pictures. In this Emirate, they have so many oil reserves that spending money on green areas is possible even in this hot climate. By the way this was our last Abu Dhabi article, now we will now focus on Dubai.

Tussen de hoogbouw van de stad en de Arabische Golf vind je de Corniche Road met zijn parken. Het begint in het westen met Family Park, het Urban Park, Lake Park, Formal Park, en in het oosten Heritage Park. De volledige wandeling duurt ongeveer 90 minuten. De architectuur van de gebouwen samen met het groen van de parken, de palmbomen, kunstmatige meren en kunst ziet er gewoon goed uit. Het meest indrukwekkende gebouw is de Abu Dhabi Investment Authority maar het Baynunah Hilton Tower Hotel is ook bewonderenswaardig. Abu Dhabi is veel groener als Dubai zoals je kan zien op de foto’s. In dit Emiraat hebben ze veel oliereserves en het spenderen van geld aan groene gebieden is zelfs mogelijk in dit hete klimaat. Tussen haakjes dit was ons laatste Abu Dhabi artikel, nu gaan we ons concentreren op Dubai.

Formula One racing around the Yas Viceroy Hotel in Abu Dhabi

The Formula One, Yas Marina Circuit in Abu Dhabi is brand new. The first Grand Prix was held in 2009. The German Sebastian Vettel won two years in a row with the Red Bull racing team and this year, it was Lewis Hamilton who took the victory in his McLaren. Next to the circuit, you have a yacht harbour and the Yas Viceroy Hotel. From the garden terrace and the outdoor restaurants you have an excellent view on the race track. The hotel staff is extremely friendly and the hotel looks great. In the lobby, there stood a gingerbread house for Christmas, you could really smell it and we were tempted to take a bite in it. A lonely motor racer was practicing on the circuit. The modern hotel looks like an excellent place to stay during the Formula One race. When you visit Ferrari World you certainly have to have a look at the race track, it is only a few kilometres away.

Het Formule 1 circuit, Yas Mirana in Abu Dhabi is gloednieuw. De eerste Grand Prix werd gehouden in 2009. De Duitse Sebastian Vettel heeft de eerste twee jaren op rij gewonnen met zijn Red Bull racing team en dit jaar was het de beurt aan Lewis Hamilton in een McLaren. Naast de circuit vind je de jachthaven en het Yas Viceroy Hotel. Van op het terras van het hotel en de restaurants heb je een uitstekend zicht op de racebaan. Het personeel is uiterst vriendelijk en het hotel ziet er prachtig uit. In de lobby stond er een peperkoekenhuisje voor Kerstmis, je kon het echt ruiken en we waren sterk aangetrokken om peperkoek te gaan proeven. Een eenzame motor racer was aan het oefenen op de racebaan. Het moderne hotel lijkt ons een ideale plaats voor te logeren tijdens de formule 1 race. Als je in Ferrari World bent moet je zeker het Formule 1 circuit bezoeken, het ligt slechts op enkele kilometers afstand.

The world wonder of Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi

The Sheikh Zayed Grand mosque in Abu Dhabi is one of the most beautiful buildings we have ever seen. The whole building, the centre court, the columns, everything is in the finest marble. This mosque is enormous and offers place for 40.000 worshippers. The mosque itself has a roof with 80 domes, it has the largest carpet in the world, and there are three chandeliers that weigh 10 ton a piece. There are two mosques in the world that are bigger, one in Mecca and the other one in Medina. Both mosques are not accessible for non Muslims. This is the largest mosque where non Muslims are allowed in. It shows that Abu Dhabi who tries to hold on to its own culture, also opens the doors for the western society. This deserves a lot of our respect. The galleries around the inner square are supported by hundreds of columns which are decorated with flower paintings. Also the marble floor of the inner court is decorated with flowers. Western visitors have to adjust a bit to enter the mosque, everyone needs to take off their shoes, men have to where long pants and sleeves, women are provided an abaya for the visit. All husbands were very curious to see their wife coming out of the dressing room in the abaya. It resulted in some very nice pictures, a lot of fun, but also respect for the Arabic culture. The abaya is an Arabic piece of clothing, a tradition; it is not a religious sign as many people in Europe think. I had to limit my pictures for this article because I took more than 40 photos on this site. Dubai is known for its openeness for tourism but their mosques are more restricted than here in more conservative Abu Dhabi.

De Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque in Abu Dhabi is één van de meest mooie gebouwen dat we ooit gezien hebben. Het volledige gebouw, het binnenplein, de zuilen, alles is gemaakt in het fijnste marmer. De moskee is enorm groot en biedt plaats aan 40.000 gelovigen. Het hoofdgebouw zelf heeft een dak met 80 koepels, het grootste tapijt ter wereld, en drie lusters die elk 10 ton wegen. Er zijn twee moskeeën in de wereld die nog groter zijn, 1 in Mekka en 1 in Medina. Beide moskeeën zijn niet toegankelijk voor niet Moslims. Dit is de grootste moskee ter wereld waar Westerlingen toegelaten worden. Het toont aan dat Abu Dhabi, dat zo tracht vast te houden aan zijn eigen cultuur, toch zijn deuren opent voor de Westerse wereld, wij hebben hier veel respect voor. De galerijen rond het binnenplein worden ondersteunt door honderden marmeren zuilen die beschilderd zijn met bloemen. Ook de vloer van het binnenplein is mooi versiert met bloemen. Westerse bezoekers dienen zich aan te passen aan de lokale gebruiken vooraleer de moskee binnen te gaan, iedereen moet zijn schoenen uit doen, mannen wordt gevraagd een lange broek en lange mouwen te dragen, de vrouwen een abaya. Alle mannen keken vol ongeduld uit naar de komst van de vrouwen uit de kleedkamer in hun abaya. Dit leidde tot mooie foto’s, leuke gebeurtenissen en ook respect voor de Arabische cultuur. De abaya is een kledingstuk van de Arabische wereld, een traditie, het geeft geen religieuze betekenis zoals velen in Europa denken. Ik heb mijn aantal foto’s voor dit artikel beperkt daar wij er meer als 40 hebben genomen. Dubai staat bekend voor zijn openheid en toerisme maar hun moskeeën zijn minder toegankelijk als hier in het meer gesloten Abu Dhabi.

The green oasis of Markaziyah Garden in the centre of Abu Dhabi

In the middle of the busy Abu Dhabi city centre, you find the Markaziyah Garden. It is located in Markaziyah West on the intersection of Al Nasr Street and King Khalid Bin Abdul Aziz Street. The park or Garden is an ideal place to escape the heat. Many palm trees provide shelter against the sun and there are two small mosques. One for women and one for men. On the West side of the park you find a large fountain from where you can take nice pictures of the skyline of Abu Dhabi. Some people come here to have a picnic or just have a drink. There are enough benches to sit downand relax.

In het midden van het drukke stadscentrum van Abu Dhabi vind je Markaziyah Garden. Deze is gelegen in Markaziyah West op de kruising van Al Nasr Street en King Khalid Bin Abdul Aziz Street. Het park of de tuin is een ideale plaats om te ontsnappen aan de hitte. Er zijn vele palmbomen die bescherming bieden tegen de zon en er staan twee kleine moskeeën. De ene is voor vrouwen, de andere voor mannen. Aan de west kant van het park staat een grote fontein. Van op deze locatie kan je mooie foto’s maken van de skyline van Abu Dhabi. Sommige mensen komen hier voor een picknick of om iets te drinken. Er zijn genoeg bankjes om te zitten en tot rust te komen.

Al Ettihad Square in the heart of the city centre of Abu Dhabi is close to the corniche promenade overlooking the Arabian Gulf. The busy street has skyscrapers on both sides and in the middle of the road, a green area with pieces of art. In our opinion, you see a vase, a tea pot, a canon, a pyramid and a bowl. It creates a special atmosphere. In the modern street you also find a small mosque. The first taxi we tried to hire was requesting us 10 times the normal fare. We didn’t accept and took a new taxi a street away from the port. This driver was prepared to use the taxi meter. A good tip, only accept to take taxis when the driver wants to use the official meter. We have to say that almost every driver uses the meter. This was an exception but it leads to a tip for all tourists who take taxis anywhere in the world.

Al Ettihad Square ligt in het hart van het stadscentrum van Abu Dhabi, dicht bij de dijk die uitkijkt over de Arabische Golf. De drukke straat heeft wolkenkrabbers aan beide zijden van de weg, een groene zone in het midden bevat kunstwerken. Naar onze mening zie je een vaas, een theepot, een kanon, een piramide en een bokaal. Het creëert een speciale ambiance. In de moderne straat heb je ook een kleine moskee. De eerste taxi wou ons hier wel naar toe brengen tegen het tienvoudige van het normale tarief. We hebben dit aanbod vriendelijk afgewezen en een straat verder verwijderd van de haven een nieuwe taxi genomen. Deze gebruikte wel de officiële meter. Een goede tip, als je taxi's neemt, gelijk waar ter wereld vraag altijd de meter op te zetten. De eerste taxi was echt een uitzondering in de VAE, hier gebruikt bijna iedere chauffeur zijn meter.

Snow in Vienna, flight to the Netherlands, oh what is it cold

After staying a long period in Oman and the UAE where it was always above 25 degrees, sometimes even above 30, we are now in The Netherlands where it is almost freezing. Our first contact with Europe was on the airport of Vienna where the planes from Austrian had to be defrosted and were standing in the snow. Luckily we could see the sun above the clouds. The holiday is over, tomorrow working again. We still have many pictures and stories to tell about Abu Dhabi and Dubai. We will do this in the coming weeks when we process our backlog.

Na een lang verblijf in Oman en de VAE, waar het altijd boven de 25 graden was en soms boven de 30, komen we nu in Nederland aan waar het bijna vriest. Ons eerste contact met Europa was op de luchthaven van Wenen, waar het vliegtuig van Austrian moest ontijst worden en er sneeuw lag. Gelukkig konden we de zon zien boven de wolken. De vakantie is voorbij, morgen terug aan het werk. We hebben echter nog vele foto’s en verhalen te vertellen over Abu Dhabi en Dubai. We gaan dit doen in de komende weken, als we onze achterstand wegwerken.

General Impressions of Abu Dhabi – A modern city with culture

Abu Dhabi is a city and Emirate under full expansion. The local population holds on to its cultural heritage and religion. All over the city, you see beautiful mosques and Arabic symbols like tea pots. We found the classical mosques with their minarets which blend in with the modern buildings very special. Many skyscrapers dominate the new beach line of Abu Dhabi. The architecture of the modern towers is just stunning. It looks like a competition for the most original or prestigious concept. Talking about prestige, on the Al Ras Al Akhdar beach, they built a 3 billion dollar hotel called Emirates Palace. The best views of the hotel can be seen from the Breakwater Island on the side of the Marina Mall. Just like in Dubai, there is a construction fury in the Emirate. With the financial crisis, the new property demand for tourism and new businesses has however dropped. Let’s hope it picks up again during 2012 so that these amazing Emirates can impress us even more.

Abu Dhabi is een stad in volle expansie. De lokale bevolking houdt zich vast aan hun cultureel erfgoed en godsdienst. Overal in de stad zie je mooie moskeeën en Arabische symbolen zoals theepotten. We vonden de klassieke minaretten die samensmelten in het landschap van moderne gebouwen zeer fascinerend. Vele wolkenkrabbers domineren de kustlijn van het nieuwe Abu Dhabi. De architectuur van deze gebouwen is gewoon verbluffend. Het lijkt wel een competitie voor de meest originele en prestigieuze concepten. Over prestige gesproken, op het Al Ras Al Akhdar strand, heeft men het Emirates Palace hotel gebouwd voor een bedrag van 3 miljard dollar. Het beste zicht op het hotel kan je aanschouwen van op Breakwater eiland, langs de kant van de Marina Mall. Juist zoals in Dubai, heerst er hier een bouwwoede. Door de Financiële crisis is de vraag naar nieuwe gebouwen voor het toerisme en de uitbreiding van het economisch leven gedaald. Laat ons hopen dat er verbetering komt in 2012 zodat de Emiraten ons nog meer kunnen verbazen.

Ferrari World in Abu Dhabi more than an amusement park

Ferrari World is an excellent amusement park. It is however not the standard park that people are expecting. They have a few good rides like two roller coasters: Formula Rossa and Fiorano GT Challenge, and a free fall tower called G-Force. There are also a few kid rides. The most impressive of the park is the architecture of the indoor park and the history of Ferrari. You see many Ferrari cars, and you have the possibility to participate in a Formula 1 race simulator. There are several theatres which run short movies around the Ferrari theme. One of the most interesting movies is that you drive together with Fernando Alonso while being seated in a moving chair. There is also a ride that takes you for a tour in the Ferrari factory of Maranello. It is a very good amusement park but there were very few visitors. Probably because of the location, 40km away from Abu Dhabi city centre in the dessert. Ferrari World needs to be visited by every car lover who has a holiday in the UAE. Go for it, feel the speed and energy of a Ferrari.

Ferrari World is een uitstekend pretpark. Het beantwoord echter niet aan de normale verwachtingen die mensen hebben van een pretpark. Het heeft twee achtbanen: Formula Rossa en Fiorano GT Challenge, en een vrije val toren, G-Force genaamd. Er zijn ook enkele attracties voor kinderen. Het meest indrukwekkende is de architectuur van het indoor park en de geschiedenis van Ferrari. Je ziet er veel Ferrari wagens, en je kan deelnemen in een Formula 1 race simulatie. Er zijn verschillende zalen waarin korte films over Ferrari worden gedraaid. Een van de meest interessante kortfilms was een rit samen met Fernando Alonso van uit een bewegende zetel. Kan je ook met een bewegende shuttle een bezoek brengen aan de geïmproviseerde Ferrari fabriek in Maranello. Het is een zeer goed park maar er waren weinig bezoekers. Waarschijnlijk door de locatie, 40 km weg van het centrum van Abu Dhabi, ergens in de woestijn. Iedere autoliefhebber die naar de UAE op vakantie gaat moet Ferrari World bezoeken. Ga er voor, voel de snelheid en energie van een Ferrari.
