After the Tokoy fish market, which is the biggest in the world, this is the second largest fish market we have ever seen. Half of an enormous hall was for the fish traders and the other half for fruit farmers. On the fruit and vegetable side, you enter a world of colours with bananas, grapes, dates, pineapples, oranges, apples, peaches, far too much to name it all. This in combination with all the decorations of the rules of the UAE makes it very special. A friendly trader offered us a taste of sweet bananas, and off course we were obliged to buy something, which he than sold at five times the price. We were dragged into this with our eyes wide open. When fishermen offered us something we had already learned our lesson. Luckily we started at the fruit side, can you image us carrying a tuna or lobster to the hotel. The fish was the daily catch and the filets looked excellent. For the first time we saw crab with blue legs. All well known fish like shrimps, scallops, shells, lobster, turbot, squid, and many other were all for sale. The friendly fisher who was posing with a large fish had the intension to sell this one to me, he even recommended me taking it to the restaurant next door. They would surely prepare for us. They had me once with the fruit, twice was pushing it a bit. All people were very open and friendly, top.

I love the local market. I tend to visit those when I travel :) Sorry about you making that expensive purchase. These locals tend to figure out who the tourists are .hahaha
ReplyDeleteYou arrived at Dubai from Abu Dhabi, cool market visit and shots ! really like to see more of the streets !

So very different to our local supermarkets yet all is still attractively presented.
ReplyDeleteI see ice on one of the displays. I was wondering if there as any refrigeration or air conditioning in there as Dubai gets very hot. How does the fish stay fresh? There certainly isn't a shortage of food in that part of the world.
ReplyDeleteAmazing variety and quantity of food! Thank you for this post as it takes us on a wonderful visit to the market, one which I don't have an opportunity for here in Charleston. Have a splendid day:^)

ReplyDeletethe fish+seafood is also wow; is it all local/fresh or imported?ENJOY!
as a real watermelon-junkie I just love the first shot:-)
Those fresh seafood looks good, especially when arranged in that way (prawns). However, the banana incident is not so nice.. The trader shouldn't pull off that kinda trick. Maybe coz they know you guys are tourists..
ReplyDeleteThanks for showing us this wonderful place! I bet everything is the freshest possible! We have blue legged crab here to eat, but I have never seen the actual crab, how very interesting, the rest of him is white!
