The historic trade importance of the Grand Bazaar, Istanbul

It is hard to decide where I you start with this article because this is such an important place and many tourists walking through the narrow alleys of the Grand Bazaar looking for souvenirs or just shopping don't even realise this. Make sure you have your mobile on you because you can easily get lost in this giant maze of more than 60 covered streets.

The Grand Bazaar was founded by Mehmet the Conqueror and is about five centuries old. It started off as a market for cloth and clothing and became the most important location of the Eastern trade routes. The market still sells its traditional Ottoman products like tea, leather, cloths, herbs, tobacco, kebab, lamps, fez, bread, silver, gold, carpets ... However some of the ancient trade items disappeared like the slaves.

Between the 4.000 shops you see men running with small plates. They carry tea around for the shop owners or customers. Inside the market which is the biggest indoor market of the world, you also find restaurants and mosques. Many of the several hundred thousand visitors a day have to eat, drink and pray. Some of you may know the Grand Bazaar from the James Bond movie Skyfall. We stayed about one hour in the Bazaar but I assume that some people could spend a whole day in the shopping paradise.

Het is moeilijk te besluiten waar ik zal starten met dit artikel. De Grand Bazaar is zo'n belangrijke historische plaats en vele toeristen of shoppers die door de smalle straatjes lopen beseffen dit niet eens. Zorg er voor dat je een gsm of mobieltje meeneemt want je kan elkaar gemakkelijk uit het oog verliezen in dit gigantische overdekte netwerk van meer dan 60 straten.

De Grand Bazaar werd opgericht door Mehmet de Veroveraar en is ongeveer vijf eeuwen oud. Het begon allemaal als een markt voor stoffen en kleding maar groeide uit tot een van de belangrijkste locaties van de Oosterse handelsroutes. De Bazaar verkoopt nog steeds traditionele Ottomaanse producten zoals thee, leer, kleding, kruiden, tabak, kebab, lampen, fez, brood, zilver, goud, tapijten.... Sommige van de historische producten zoals slaven worden nu wel niet meer verkocht. 

Tussen de ongeveer 4.000 winkeltjes zie je mannen rennen met kleine serveerbladen. Ze brengen thee naar de winkeliers en hun klanten. In het complex, wat de grootste overdekte markt ter wereld is vind je ook restaurants en moskeeën. Vele van de honderdduizenden bezoekers per dag moeten kunnen eten, drinken en bidden. Sommigen onder jullie zullen deze markt misschien kennen uit de James Bond film Skyfall. Wij bleven iets langer dan een uur in de Grand Bazaar maar gaan er van uit dat vele mensen wel een volledige dag in dit winkelparadijs kunnen doorbrengen.

Swissport strike at Brussels Airport causes problems for our cruise

The company which handles luggage of many airlines at Brussels Airport has a conflict with the unions. Since last Sunday, the staff decided to strike and passengers can not take their suitcases’ on holiday. We had to leave for our cruise starting from Barcelona and the strike was still on.

Going on a cruise without luggage is not ideal. What were our options? Departing from a different airport or driving 1.400 km by car. Both options would cost us an additional 700 euro in travel costs. We decided to wait and go to the airport in the hope the strike would be over. No luck. We were not allowed to check in luggage and if we would do so, it would arrive in Barcelona after departure of the ship. We were allowed to take some extra handlugguage.

We bought two extra small size bags in the airport shop at off course increased prices. All products were reprised and the shop owners were taking advantage of the misery of passengers. Congratulations.

On the picture you see Kristel repacking, we left two big suitcases behind and replaced them by two hand bags. On our cruise we will be obliged to buy a suitcase and some clothing. We are already preparing a claim for damages.

To all our blog friends, we will not be so active this month because we are travelling and on a ship. The daily publications will go on. The articles related to the cruise are expected to be published as of June.

Het bedrijf Swissport dat de bagage voor vele luchtvaart maatschappijen op Brussels Airport afhandelt heeft een conflict met de vakbonden. Sinds vorige zondag is er een staking en kunnen passagiers hun koffers niet mee op vakantie nemen. Wij hadden een vlucht geboekt naar Barcelona op woensdag om in te schepen voor onze Celebrity Cruise. De staking was nog steeds aan de gang.

Op cruise vertrekken zonder bagage is ver van ideaal. Wat waren onze opties? Vertrekken uit een andere luchthaven of met de auto 1.400 km rijden. Beide opties zouden ongeveer 700 euro extra kosten teweeg brengen. We besloten af te wachten en naar de luchthaven te gaan, in de hoop dat de staking beëindigd zou worden. Geen geluk! We mochten onze bagage niet inchecken en indien dit wel toegelaten werd, zou ze nooit voor de afvaart van de cruise in Barcelona aangekomen zijn. We kregen toelating extra handbagage mee te nemen. 

We kochten dus twee extra kleine tassen in de luchthaven winkel die natuurlijk zijn prijzen had verhoogd. Op alle handbagage had men nieuwe verhoogde prijzen geplakt en profiteerde men van de miserie van de passagier. Proficiat. 

Op de foto zie je Kristel alles herpakken. We lieten twee grote valiezen achter en namen twee extra kleine tassen mee. Op de cruise zullen we verplicht zijn een nieuwe valies en kleding te kopen. Onze schadeclaim wordt al voorbereid. 

Aan al onze blogvrienden, we gaan niet zo actief zijn deze maand daar we reizen en op een schip verblijven. De dagelijkse publicaties gaan echter door. Artikelen gerelateerd aan de cruise zullen worden gepubliceerd vanaf juni.

Practicing night shot photography in Istanbul

Since I have an SLR, my night photography is already better than with my compact camera but it still needs to improve. All these pictures have been taken without tripod and sometimes it takes a while for the camera to fix the shot. With a tripod it would all be a lot sharper. Conclusion, this week I bought a tripod and will take it with me on our travels. Kristel is already pulling her eyebrows, again a new toy, what's the next thing.

Let us go back to Istanbul. From which monuments did I take pictures? Well, some of the main attractions like the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia and the Dolmabahce Palace could not be skipped. We also added impressions of the Bosphorus, the Four Seasons hotel and the Dolmabahce Mosque. We hope you like the coloured fountain in the Sultanahmet Park, it is one of our favourites.

Sinds ik een SLR camera heb gaat mijn nachtfotografie er op vooruit, maar het kan nog veel beter. Al deze foto's werden genomen zonder statief en soms duurt het even vooraleer de camera het beeld vastlegt. Met een statief zou alles scherper zijn. Conclusie: deze week kocht ik een statief dat nu ook wordt meegenomen op onze reizen. Kristel trekt haar wenkbrauwen al op, nog een speeltje, wat is het volgende? 

Maar laten we terug gaan naar Istanboel. Van welke monumenten hebben we foto's genomen? Sommige van de meest beroemde bezienswaardigheden zoals de Blauwe Moskee, de Hagia Sophia en het Dolmabahce Paleis mochten niet ontbreken. We legden ook enkele impressies vast van de bruggen over de Bosphorus rivier, het Four Seasons hotel en de Dolmabahce Moskee. We hopen dat je de gekleurde fontein in het Sultanahmetpark leuk vindt, het is een van onze favoriete foto's in deze reeks.
