Excellent culinary tartar starter at restaurant Muusu, Riga

During our Riga weekend we saw restaurant Muusu in a culinary magazine and were impressed with the food presentation. In the afternoon we walked by the restaurant and made reservation for dinner. The restaurant was cozy, there was live piano music and the service outstanding.

The menu listed a wide choice of appetizers and main courses. Given the appearance of the restaurant and the wine card, we expected very good quality. The Chef met all expectations and blew us away with his taste and creativity. He used all his skills built up in the kitchen team of restaurant Noma in Copenhagen, which was several times best restaurant in the world according to the Pellegrino guide. Needless to say that we returned the next evening to enjoy his cooking again.

We had appetizers of scallops and beef tartar. As main course we selected the filet mignon and duck. Every dish was excellent but our preference went out to the tartar which we decided to eat again on the second evening. What a special starter. Congratulations.

Tijdens ons Riga weekend zagen we restaurant Muusu in een culinair magazine en waren we onder de indruk van de gerechten op foto. Op een wandeling langs het restaurant reserveerden we een tafeltje voor het diner. Het had een gezellige uitstraling, er speelde een pianist en de bediening was voortreffelijk.

Het menu bood een ruime keuze aan voorgerechten en hoofdschotels. Gezien de uitstraling van het restaurant en de wijnkaart lagen onze verwachtingen reeds hoog. De Chef overtrof deze met glans omwille van zijn creativiteit en smaak. Hij heeft ervaring opgedaan in restaurant Noma te Kopenhagen, dat verschillende keren werd bekroond als beste restaurant ter wereld volgens de Pellegrino gids. We hebben er zo van genoten dat we de volgende dag er weer gaan eten zijn. 

Als voorgerechten kozen we voor St. Jacobsnoten en een rundertartaar. Onze hoofdgerechten waren ossenhaas en eend. Iedere schotel was uitstekend maar onze voorkeur ging uit naar de tartaar die we de tweede avond terug kozen. Wat een ongelooflijk gerecht. Proficiat.

Perfectly rebuilt House of Blackheads, Riga

The Old City Hall Square is one of the most beautiful and popular attractions of Riga. The main reason for this success is the 14th century House of Blackheads. It was owned by German craftsmen and split into two parts which can be seen at the facade.

The gothic walls are covered with decorations and statues, the blue elements are particularly nice. In the last century the house was destroyed by wars but completely rebuilt at the end of the nineties. It is now brand new and serves as a museum.

Het oude stadhuisplein is één van de mooiste en meest populaire bezienswaardigheden van Riga. De hoofdreden voor dit succes is het Huis van Zwarthoofden. Dit was eigendom van Duitse ambachtslui en werd opgedeeld in twee gebouwen wat de gevel duidelijk laat zien. 

De Gotische gevel is bezet met versieringen en standbeelden, de blauwe elementen zijn bijzonder mooi. De vorige eeuw werd het plein en alle gebouwen vernietigd door oorlog maar terug volledig gerestaureerd eind jaren negentig. Het is dus splinternieuw en doet dienst als museum.

Cave of Our Lady in the Sapju Dievmates church, Riga

The Sapju Dievmates church in Riga has a white exterior and interior. From the inside it looks a lot larger. Most of the decorations are simple but the cave of Our Lady was very special. In most churches it is difficult to take pictures of the cave due to the light circumstances. Here they were optimal, maybe because of the white interior.

Inside the church was a guardian who provided information to visitors. The only problem was we could not understand the woman, she only spoke Latvian or Russian. She did her best and we gave a small donation. Let's continue our trip, there is a lot to see in Riga.

De Sapju Dievmates kerk in Riga heeft een witte gevel alsook een wit interieur, waardoor alles aan de binnenzijde groter lijkt. De meeste decoraties zijn eenvoudig maar de grot van Onze Lieve Vrouw was bijzonder. In de meeste kerken is het heel moeilijk goede foto's te nemen van zo'n grot maar hier waren de lichtomstandigheden optimaal. Het komt waarschijnlijk door het witte interieur. 

In de kerk liep een opzichter die bezoekers informatie voorzag. Het enige probleem was dat we deze vrouw niet begrepen, zij sprak enkel Lets of Russisch. Ze deed haar best en we gaven een kleine donatie. Laten we verder gaan want er is veel te zien in Riga.

Milda holding three stars on top of the Freedom Monument, Riga

On top of this 42 meter high obelisk stands a lady in green copper holding up three stars. These symbolise the three regions (Latgale, Courland and Vidzeme) who became independent from Russia and formed the country Latvia.

The Freedom monument is also a memorial for soldiers who died in the war for independence. The base of the monument contains many statues of freedom fighters. Soldiers guard this monument and take their role very seriously, don't mess with these guys when taking pictures, this is not a London guard.

Op een hoogte van 42 meter, bovenop de obelisk staat de uit koper gehouwen dame Milda. Zij houdt drie sterren omhoog die de regio’s Letgallen, Koerland en Lijfland symboliseren. Deze regio's streden samen voor de onafhankelijkheid van Rusland en vormden de nieuwe staat Letland. 

Het vrijheidsmonument is tevens een eerbetoon aan de soldaten die in deze onafhankelijkheidsstrijd sneuvelden. De basis van het monument bevat vele standbeelden van de vrijheidsstrijders. De soldaten die dit monument bewaken nemen hun taak heel serieus. Haal hier geen grappen uit zoals bij de bewakers in Londen, deze jongens lachen er niet mee.

Modern Islande Hotel in Kipsala, Riga

We selected the Islande Hotel because it was at walking distance to our dancing competition. This is something we always have in mind and prefer to be close to such events when staying abroad. Our room was spacious.

The public places of the hotel were modern and had ambiance lights. Almost every evening there was live music in the lobby bar and the top floor restaurant had excellent views on the Vasnu Bridge. We had diner here the first evening, food was good and a friendly service.

We kozen voor het Islande Hotel omdat het op wandelafstand lag van de locatie voor onze danswedstrijd. Hier houden we rekening mee en proberen op verplaatsing altijd zo dicht mogelijk te logeren bij de evenementenhallen. Onze kamer was heel ruim. 

Publieke plaatsen in het hotel hadden een moderne uitstraling met sfeerlichten. Bijna iedere avond was er live muziek in de lobby bar en op het bovenste verdiep werd een restaurant uitgebaat. Tijdens het eten had je een goed zicht over de rivier en de Vasnu Bridge. Het eten is er goed en een vriendelijke bediening.

Conservative Nativity of Christ Cathedral, Riga

This must have been one of the most conservative churches we have ever visited. The exterior is hidden a bit by surrounding trees but the orthodox Russian architecture is very special. When you walk by, we would recommend to have a look inside, don't go out of your way to see it.

Inside we were not allowed to take pictures and women had to wear a scarf. It seemed like time stood still here for a few centuries. Kristel was not happy about it and hardly entered the church.

Dit moet de meest conservatieve kerk zijn die we ooit hebben bezocht. Het exterieur is een beetje verborgen achter bomen maar de Russisch Orthodoxe architectuur is heel speciaal. Als je hier voorbij wandelt, raden we je aan eens binnen een kijkje te nemen. Het is echter geen toegewijd bezoek waard. 

Binnen mochten er geen foto's genomen worden en vrouwen waren verplicht een hoofddoek te dragen. Het leek net of de tijd hier enkele eeuwen stil heeft gestaan. Kristel was hier voor niet in de mood en trad amper de kerk binnen.

General Impressions of Riga, the capital of Latvia

Riga is a nice capital for a city trip but we would recommend this in the summer. When we were there it was rather grey and cold. Similar as the history of Latvia which was part of Russia. The World Wars really impacted the country. At the end of WWI Latvia became independent from Russia and at the beginning of WWII it was annexed again. Latvia is independent from the Sovjet Union for the second time since 1991. With the new tensions between Russia and the Baltic states, the stability is fragile again.

We were not sensitive for these political tensions in Riga. At the port, Kristel posed for a picture at the Vanšu Bridge, the bridge is more than 600 metres long and we were crossing it at least twice a day on foot. Our hotel was in Kipsala and we walked frequently to the old town. On the pictures you see some forts, churches, historic facades, graffiti and the opera.

We read a lot about Riga and got a rather negative image because of crime stories. Being there this was not the case, we never felt insecure, even walking the streets at night. Riga is a great city and surprised us in many ways. Don’t have any doubt when considering a Baltic city trip.

Riga is een mooie hoofdstad en deze kunnen we zeker aanbevelen voor een zomerse city trip. Toen wij er waren was het nog grijs en koud. Gelijkaardig als de geschiedenis van Letland toen het nog deel uit maakte van Rusland. De Wereldoorlogen hebben echt een grote impact gehad op het land. Aan het einde van de Eerste Wereldoorlog werd Letland onafhankelijk van Rusland en aan het begin van de Tweede Wereldoorlog werd het voor de tweede keer geannexeerd door Rusland. Letland werd terug onafhankelijk van de Sovjet Unie in 1991. Met de nieuwe spanningen tussen Rusland en de Baltische Staten wordt deze stabiliteit terug fragiel.

Wij waren ons in het straatbeeld niet bewust van de politieke spanningen in de regio. Aan de haven poseerde Kristel voor een foto aan de Vanšu Bridge die meer als 600 meter lang is en die wij verschillende keren per dag over wandelden. Ons hotel lag aan de overkant van het water in Kipsala en we gingen heel vaak naar de oude stad. Op onze foto’s zie je een fort, kerken, historische gevels en de opera. 

Na het lezen van verhalen over criminaliteit in Riga tegen toeristen hadden we een negatief beeld en bleven we op onze hoede. Het was echter niet zo, we voelden ons altijd veilig zelfs op straat, zelfs tijdens de nacht. Riga is een top stad en verraste ons veelvuldig. Twijfel niet als je deze stad wil bezoeken.
