Views from the Chorrillos Cliffs of Miraflores and Lovers Park, Lima

The steep cliffs of Chorrillos and the views on Miraflores and the Pacific Ocean were one of the first pictures we saw of Lima on the internet. We were impressed and had to see it ourselves. Looking straight ahead you face the modern buildings of Miraflores, looking down the ocean and traffic making its way around this huge metro pole. On one of the cliffs in front of us you see a tall lighted cross, an expression of devotion to Jesus. Peru is a very religious country.

The place we are at is called Lovers Park and opened for the public in 1993 on Valentine Day. The most famous piece of art is of a couple kissing, many visitors find inspiration in this and also kiss each other. I was too busy playing with my camera, lol. We were however attracted towards a replica of the Gaudi bench from Barcelona. The local artist used a similar style but different shape and size. We liked the concept.

With this highlight of Lima, we are saying goodbye to Peru. It was a great adventure and we hope you enjoyed our Peru articles. Our next stop in South America will be Buenos Aires, we catch our flight early in the morning.

De steile Chorrillos Kliffen met zicht op Miraflores en de Stille Oceaan, waren één van de eerste Lima foto's die we aantroffen op het internet. Onder de indruk besloten we zeker deze plaats te bezoeken. Als je recht voor je uit kijkt zie je het moderne Miraflores, naar beneden kijkende de oceaan en het drukke verkeer dat zich een weg baant rond de enorme metropool. Op één van de bergen voor ons staat een heel hoog verlicht kruis ter ere van Jezus. Peru is een heel gelovig land.

De locatie waar we staan heet Lovers Park en opende voor het publiek op Valentijn in 1993. Het bekendste kunstwerk is van een zoenend koppel, vele bezoekers vinden hierin inspiratie en kussen elkaar ook. Ik had hier niet aan gedacht en speelde verder met mijn fototoestel, lol. We werden echter aangetrokken tot een replica van de Gaudi bank uit Barcelona. De lokale kunstenaar gebruikte een gelijkaardige stijl maar met verschillende vorm en grootte. We hielden hier wel van. 

Met dit hoogtepunt uit Lima nemen we afscheid van Peru. Het was een prachtig avontuur en we hopen dat je van onze Peru artikelen hebt genoten. Onze volgende stop in Zuid-Amerika is Buenos Aires, we nemen onze vlucht vroeg in de ochtend.

The wooden cathedral of Lima and Francisco Pizarro

One of the most important buildings on Plaza Mayor is the Cathedral of Lima built in the 16th century. It is interesting to know that the entire church is constructed in wood. This is not visible from the exterior because of the facade mounted against it. The last picture shows you the wooden planks hidden behind the plaster.

The church is rather wide with two clock towers in European style. From the middle of Plaza Mayor, I could take a picture of the complete church with a few palm trees on the foreground. We are in a tropical area after all.

For us the most important historical element is the tomb of Francisco Pizarro. He was the head conquistador who conquered Peru and married a Peruvian girl. It was not out of love but a strategy from the invaders to integrate with the local population. In the first chapel we see his grave and painting. He died on the battle field by receiving tens of sword and knife stabs. Someone must have been very angry with him.

Eén van de belangrijkste gebouwen op Plaza Mayor is de Kathedraal van Lima die werd gebouwd in de 16de eeuw. Het is verbazend te horen dat de volledige kerk opgetrokken is in hout. Je kan dit niet zien aan de buitenzijde daar men er een stenen gevel tegen aangezet heeft. De laatste foto toont echter de houten planken die verborgen zijn achter het plaaster.

De kerk is heel breed en heeft twee Europees geïnspireerde kloktorens. Van op het midden van Plaza Mayor kon ik een foto maken van de volledige kerk met enkele palmbomen op de voorgrond. Dit is niet verwonderlijk daar we ons in een tropisch gebied bevinden. 

Voor ons is het belangrijkste geschiedkundig element in de kathedraal, het graf van Francisco Pizarro. Hij was de conquistador leider die Peru veroverde en een Peruviaans meisje trouwde. Hij deed dit echter niet uit liefde maar het was een algemeen toegepaste strategie van de kolonisten om zich bij de lokale bevolking te integreren. In de eerste kapel zien we zijn graf en een schilderij. Hij stierf op het slagveld, getroffen door tientallen zwaardslagen en messteken. Iemand moet hem echt gehaat hebben.

Port of Callao, Lima. Tips for cruise passengers.

On one of our Lima days, we stayed on board of the Celebrity Infinity and attentively kept an eye on all the activities around us in the harbor. It was very busy with incoming and departing cargo. Near our cruise ship there were also expansion works on the docks. The most important port of South America is still in full expansion.

The district of the port is known to be dangerous. Don't go to the fortress or yacht harbor with its shopping area on foot. Always take a taxi or go on an organized trip. Take into account that a taxi to Miraflores will be about a two hour drive, one way. It is also difficult to find taxi drivers who want to bring you back to the Port of Callao.

Op één van onze Lima dagen verbleven we aan boord van de Celebrity Infinity en keken aandachtig naar de haven activiteiten rondom ons. Het was er zeer druk met inkomende en vertrekkende cargo. Dicht bij ons cruise schip werd er aan de dokken gewerkt. De belangrijkste haven van Zuid-Amerika is nog in volle expansie. 

Het havendistrict staat berucht vanwege criminaliteit. Ga niet te voet naar het fort of de jachthaven waar de winkelcentra zijn. Neem altijd een taxi of ga mee op een georganiseerde uitstap. Hou er rekening mee dat een taxirit naar Miraflores ongeveer twee uren in beslag kan nemen, enkele richting. Het is ook niet gemakkelijk taxi chauffeurs te vinden die je willen terug rijden naar de haven van Callao.

Not feeling well between the architectural treasures on Plaza Mayor, Lima

Plaza Mayor is one of the most beautiful squares we have ever seen and we rate this place as the best attraction of Lima. The buildings are incredible, in the middle you find many flower beds, trees and a huge fountain. Everything is colorful with cozy terraces on the first floor of hotels. On the corner a Hop-on Hop-off Mirabus was dropping of customers.

The black extensions of hotels against yellow facades make it special. The buildings around Plaza Mayor are all significant: the Archbishop Palace, the Cathedral, the City Hall and the Presidential Palace. It was very hot and I felt terrible from eating wrong meat. This was probably the most difficult day I ever had during our travels. My condition got worst during the night and Kristel was already fearing I had to go to hospital. Not an ideal scenario in Lima when you don’t speak Spanish. The next day everything was fine again.

Plaza Mayor is één van de mooiste pleinen die we ooit gezien hebben en we schatten dit plein in als de beste bezienswaardigheid van Lima. De gebouwen zijn ongelooflijk, in het midden van het plein vind je vele bloemenperken, bomen en een grote fontein. Alles is kleurrijk met gezellige terrasjes op de eerste etages van hotels. Op de hoek stond een Hop-on Hop-off Mirabus klanten aan te lossen. 

De zwarte uitbouwen van hotel tegen de gele gevels maken het heel speciaal. Gebouwen rond Plaza Mayor zijn allen bijzonder: het Aartsbisschoppelijk Paleis, de Kathedraal, het gemeentehuis en het Presidentieel Paleis. Het was zeer warm en ik voelde mij super slecht na het eten van slecht vlees. Dit was waarschijnlijk de moeilijkste dag van al onze vakanties. Mijn toestand werd ’s nachts slechter en Kristel begon te vrezen dat ik in het ziekenhuis zou worden opgenomen. Niet het ideale scenario als Belgische jongen in Lima die geen Spaans spreekt. Gelukkig was de volgende alles terug normaal.

San Francisco Monastery and the skulls of the Lima catacombs

No we are not yet in the USA but still in Lima. San Francisco refers to the Saint Francisco to whom this church is dedicated. On the square there are a few people with hundreds of pigeons. The façade of the monastery is unbelievable, the sculptures and details are amazing.

Inside the monastery and church we were not allowed to take pictures but the paintings and library were very nice. I would all Lima visitors to go to this monastery. It is worth the visit.

Under the building you find the catacombs. A scary place and the first burial grounds of Lima where about 70.000 deceased people openly lay on the underground cellar. A tradition that we don’t see in many places, it is in fact the first time we visit such a true catacomb.

We end the article with an old Peruvian tradition of collecting skulls. One of the skulls we saw in the catacomb was shinny from the varnish. We wondered why? Older generations believed that taking a skull of a deceased person in house, putting it in a cupboard and showing respect would protect their home. Many families did this but the current generation no longer believes in this tradition. Some families return the skulls to the catacombs when the parents are no longer at home.

Nee, we zijn nog niet in de Verenigde Staten maar nog steeds in Lima. San Francisco refereert naar de Heilige Francisco naar wie deze kerk werd vernoemd. Op het plein zie je enkele mensen en honderden duiven. De kloostergevel is ongelooflijk met zijn vele beeldhouwwerken en details.

In het klooster mochten we geen foto’s nemen maar de schilderwerken en bibliotheek waren heel mooi. Alle toeristen die naar Lima komen zouden deze plaats moeten bezoeken. Het is het zeker waard. 

Onder het gebouw vind je de catacomben. Een angstaanjagende locatie en de oudste begraafplaats in Lima waar ongeveer 70.000 mensen open en bloot in de ondergrondse kelder liggen. Een traditie die je in weinige landen ziet en voor ons is dit de eerste keer. 

We eindigen ons artikel met de Peruviaanse traditie van het verzamelen van schedels. In een mis lag een gelakte schedel en we vroegen ons af waarom dit was. Oudere generaties geloofden dat het bewaren van een schedel in huis, hun bescherming gaf tegen geesten. De schedel werd opgegraven en bewaard in een kast, de bovenkant werd vernist. Heel veel families deden dit maar de huidige generatie geloofd hier niet meer in, eens de ouders het huis verlaten of overlijden worden schedels terug naar de catacomben gebracht.
