General Impressions of Mons (Bergen)

We are visiting the city of Mons (Bergen) in the south east of Belgium. This is in the French speaking part of the country (La Wallonie). Mons has a great market square with fountains, the city hall and a clock tower. It is nice to walk in this town with parks, churches, art and historical buildings. We were combining our trip with a dance event.

Living in the Netherlands we have a lot of respect for the hotel chain Van der Valk. They provide excellent quality rooms at reasonable rates. When travelling in the Benelux we always try to stay in such a hotel.

Memories from a young couple, Chateau de la Tour in Chantilly

About twenty years ago, we went on our first weekend together in a small castle around Chantilly, France. It made a real impression on us and we tried to visualize our memories. There is no better way than to go back and experience it again.

The exterior of the castle still looked the same. We remember however fantastic rooms and food. Going back was a bit disappointing. Maybe we evolved a lot after being married for 17 years. It was fun to travel back into time. It makes you reflect on your life.

Thaweesin hot springs, a special way to boil eggs, Chiang Rai

On our way from Chiang Mai to Chiang Rai, in the northern part of Thailand, we stop at the Twaweesin hot springs. Around the hot spring, locals made a garden and built some shops. Everything is rather primitive and we cannot imagine that many non-guided tourists find this place. Here you can boil eggs in still natural water of 95 degrees Celsius. Don’t put your hands or feet in it. A bit further where the temperature is lower, it becomes possible.

On the same road, there is a building which looks like a temple. We enter, explore it and discover it is brand new, however already deserted. One of the neighbors told us this project was to be a Wellness center with hotel. They said the owner had been arrested on suspicion of drugs trafficking. The land is now in the hands of the government and the project stopped. A pity no-one else continues the construction.

Room with a view on the Mekong River, Golden Triangle

We arrived in the small village of Sobruak, there is only one street with a few hotels and restaurants. Most tourists come here to see the Mekong River and the border point of Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. On our discovery of north Thailand, we are one of the few tourists staying overnight.

This area is called the Golden Triangle. Its name originates from the gold which was earned in smuggling between the three countries, mainly drugs. What was once a very dangerous region is now a traffic vane for cargo ships? We are amazed of the different vessel types passing by. We make a trip with a long tail boat.

Gambling is forbidden in Thailand and to their advantage, Myanmar and Laos built casinos just a few hundred meters further across and alongside the river. In the evening you see long tail boats from the casino’s picking up people. When they bring them back is another question. We stayed put and retreated early to our room.
