Brunnenhof of the Residenz Palace, Munich

We continue focusing on fountains. This time on the inner square of the Munich Residenz palace. As you can see the area is prepared with chairs for an evening concert. Outdoor concerts are very popular in the Bavarian capital.

The Neptunus fountain with its black statues contains many details. Each creature is carved into black brown natural stones and a shiny finishing makes it look brand new. On the pictures we recognize lions, Neptunus, a boy sitting on a turtle, a sea dragon, a goat, angels holding up a crown and a dog. The buildings in the background are all part of the Residenz Palace.

We blijven ons concentreren op fonteinen. Deze keer op het binnenplein van de Residenz Palace te München. Op het plein staan stoelen opgesteld voor een avondconcert. Openlucht concerten zijn heel populair in de Beierse hoofdstad. 

De Neptunus fontein met zijn zwarte beelden bevat een overvloed aan details. Ieder wezen is gebeeldhouwd in een donkere natuursteen die werd afgewerkt met glans. Dit geeft de impressie dat de fontein nog jong is. Op de foto's herken je leeuwen, Neptunus, een jongen op een schildpad, een zeedraak, een geit, engelen die een kroon ophouden en een hond. De gebouwen rond de fontein maken allen deel uit van het Residenz paleis.

Wittelsbacher Brunnen or fountains at the Lenbachplatz, Munich

The Wittelsbacher fountains on the Lenbachplatz are impressive due to the statues around them. On the one side you see a woman sitting on a sea bull and on the other side a men on a sea horse. The adult climbing the statue gives you an idea of its size. Doesn't Kristel look fabulous in her red dress in front of the fountain?

On this busy square, north of the Munich city centre, you find several interesting buildings. We particularly liked the white grey modern looking tower and the stock market building. Around the corner there is a high profile hairdresser, the piece of art in the last picture marks the entrance of the shop.

De Wittelsbacher fonteinen op de Lenbachplatz zijn indrukwekkend vanwege de bijhorende standbeelden. Aan de ene zijde zie je een vrouw op een mythische zeestier en aan de andere kant een man op een zeepaard. De volwassene die het beeld beklimt geeft de lezer een idee van de werkelijke grootte. Ziet Kristel er niet fantastisch uit in haar rode jurk? 

Deze drukke verkeersader ligt juist noordelijk van het oude stadscentrum en bevat veel mooie gebouwen. In het bijzonder werden we aangetrokken door de moderne wit grijze toren en het beursgebouw. Om de hoek vind je een hoogstaande trendy kapperszaak, het kunstwerk op de laatste foto markeert de ingang van het etablissement.

Bavarian Opera stage in the Cuvilliés Theatre, Munich

Inside the palace corridors you find many beautiful paintings. The modern hall between the palace and the theatre has a deep acoustic. Walking in the middle of the room turns the sound of your foot steps in to thunder. This is not exaggerated. It is unbelievable.

We know Munich very well and had seen pictures of the Cuvilliés Theatre. The last time we visited the Munich Residence palace connected to it, the theatre was closed. We were so disappointed because this was the main reason for our visit. A few years later we came back and were impressed.

This is the stage of the Bavarian State Opera, an 18th century rococo architecture music hall. Statues of naked men and women are supporting the lodges. It is called Cuvilliés Theatre after the name of the designer of the theatre. The red colors and gold decorations are heavy but blow you away. We can’t imagine how fantastic it must be to it here during an Opera performance.

In de gangen van het paleis vind je veel mooie schilderijen. De moderne hal tussen het paleis en het theater heeft een diepe akoestiek. Je voetstappen in het midden van de hal lijken wel op donderslagen. Dit is niet overdreven. Het is ongelooflijk.

We kennen München heel goed en hadden reeds foto’s gezien van het Cuvilliés theater. Tijdens ons laatste bezoek aan de Munich Residence was het theater gesloten. Hierdoor waren we enorm teleurgesteld want dit was onze hoofdreden voor het bezoek. Een paar jaar later kwamen we terug en zwaar onder de indruk. 

Dit is het podium van de Beierse Staatsopera, een 18 eeuwse rococo muziekhal. Standbeelden van naakte mannen en vrouwen ondersteunen de loges. Het wordt het Cuvilliés theater genoemd naar de architect van het theater. De rode kleuren en gouden decoraties zijn zwaar maar blazen u echt weg. We kunnen ons niet voorstellen hoe fantastisch het moet zijn hier een opera voorstelling bij te wonen.

More than beer, the carnival fair of the Oktoberfest 2014, Munich

The Oktoberfest is not only beer drinking, also the kids, teenagers and carnival lovers are in for a treat. This is probably the biggest carnival fair in the world. Some of the traditional attractions like the Krinoline are 90 years old. This vintage turning and bouncing carousel has its own life orchestra. It is still a popular attraction and nice to see.

On the other end of the spectrum you have tens of modern thrill machines like rollercoasters, high speed swings, chaotic turning attractions, free fall towers and all very nicely decorated. These are high-tech machines for which the carnival traders have to make serious investments. You better hope for good weather at the Oktoberfest because here you make or break your season.

Het Oktoberfest is niet alleen maar drinken, ook de kinderen, tieners en kermisfanaten komen hier aan hun trekken. Dit is waarschijnlijk de grootste kermis ter wereld. Sommige traditionele molens zoals de Krinoline zijn 90 jaar oud. Deze antieke op en neer gaande draaicarrousel heeft zijn eigen blaaskapel. De attractie is nog steeds populair en leuk om naar te kijken. 

Aan het andere uiteinde van het spectrum heb je tientallen moderne machines zoals achtbanen, snelle swingmolens, chaotisch draaiende molens, vrije val torens en allen even mooi gedecoreerd. Deze machines vertegenwoordigen zware investeringen van de kermisuitbaters. Je kan beter op goed weer rekenen tijdens het Oktoberfest want hier maak je of breek je kermisseizoen.
