Fisherman's Wharf spotted Sea Lion, Victoria Island

Fisherman's Wharf is an amazing place with small colorful houses, restaurants and tourist shops. We have to admit we loved this place. At the entrance shows a welcome board names of the main businesses and a few animals: a heron, crab and a spotted Sea Lion.

We have never seen a spotted Sea Lion, even not in the zoo, this must be a ferry tale. We were wrong. Next to the fish restaurants, we saw one swimming in the port. On his back, turning, looking at the people and a little girl on the boardwalk. Considering his size, you could conclude he was regularly getting food from tourists. He was not shy at all.

Fisherman's Wharf is een ongelooflijke plaats met kleurrijke huisjes, restaurants en toeristische winkels. We moeten toegeven hiervan te houden. Het welkomsbord toont de namen van de voornaamste ondernemers en enkele dieren: een reiger, krab en gevlekte zeeleeuw. 

We hadden nog nooit een gevlekte zeeleeuw gezien, zelfs niet in de zoo. Dit moet wel een sprookje zijn. Naast de visrestaurants zagen we er één zwemmen in de haven. Op zijn rug, draaiende, naar de mensen kijken en spelen met een meisje op een houten platform. Rekening houdende met zijn volume, kon je concluderen dat hij regelmatig eten kreeg van toeristen of restauranthouders. Hij was zeker niet verlegen of argwanend.

This very big luxury hotel located at the harbor and parliament of Victoria Island is more than 100 years old. It is a symbol of traditions and the UK heritage in Canada. The double decker bus in front of the hotel convinces everyone who had any doubts.

In the lobby of the hotel, you see a small model of an ocean liner. British business men and families were travelling from Asia across the Pacific to Canada and stayed in this hotel. From here they took the railroad to the east side of the northern continent. The days of air travel changed this entirely.

Dit enorm groot luxe hotel gelegen aan de haven en het parlement van Victoria Island is meer dan 100 jaar oud. Het symboliseert traditie en Engels erfgoed in Canada. De dubbeldekker bus voor het hotel overtuigd iedereen die nog enige twijfels had. 

In de hotellobby, zie je een schaalmodel van een oceaanschip. Britse zakenlui en hun families reisden van Azië over de Stille Oceaan naar Canada en verbleven in dit hotel. Van hieruit namen ze de spoorweg naar het oosten van het noordelijke continent. Het tijdperk van luchtverkeer maakte een einde aan deze traditie.

Parliament building of Victoria Island

The parliament on Victoria Island is the most impressive building of the city. It is surrounded by gardens and flowers. On the harbor side, visitors are transferred back into time when a horse and carriage passes by.

This enormous architectural treasure is a collection of domes, towers and statues. In our opinion this is the most beautiful piece of classic architecture in North America.

Het parlement van Victoria Island is het meest indrukwekkende gebouw van de stad. Het is omringd door tuinen en bloemen. Aan de kant van de haven, worden bezoekers in de tijd terug getransformeerd als een paard en koets voorbij wandelt. 

Dit enorme gebouw met koepels, torens en beeldhouwwerken is een architecturaal juweel. Naar onze mening is dit het meest mooie grote architecturale kunstwerk van noord Amerika.

General Impressions of Victoria Island and marine navigation rules

Victoria Island is an amazing place and an interesting cruise port. We met some people from this region and they called it Vancouver Island. It is known for its nature, the Empress Hotel and the Parliament building.

Why do so many cruise ships stop here? Not only for the beauty. We were equally surprised as you. When a non US cruise ship sets course to Alaska from the US, it always has to stop in Canada. The US Marine rules seem to require that only US ships can sail between US ports only.

This is the reason why most cruise ships from Washington State to Alaska stop during their journey in Vancouver or Victoria Island. By doing this they respect the US marine navigation rules. Cruise traveling seems to be more complicated than most passengers think.

Victoria Island is een fantastische plaats en interessante cruise haven. We hebben enkele mensen ontmoet van deze regio en zij noemden het Vancouver Island. Het staat bekend vanwege de natuur, het Empress Hotel en het parlementsgebouw. 

Waarom stoppen er hier zoveel cruise schepen? Niet enkel vanwege de schoonheid van het gebied. Als een niet US schip vaart naar Alaska vanuit de US, moet het altijd stoppen in Canada. De zeevaart reglementen voorzien dat enkel US schepen kunnen varen tussen enkel US havens. 

Dat is de reden waarom de meeste cruise schepen vertrekkende uit Washington State naar Alaska gedurende hun reis stoppen in Victoria Island of Vancouver. Hierdoor respecteren ze de US zeevaart reglementeringen. Cruising is gecompliceerder dan de meeste passagiers denken.
