Memories from a young couple, Chateau de la Tour in Chantilly

About twenty years ago, we went on our first weekend together in a small castle around Chantilly, France. It made a real impression on us and we tried to visualize our memories. There is no better way than to go back and experience it again.

The exterior of the castle still looked the same. We remember however fantastic rooms and food. Going back was a bit disappointing. Maybe we evolved a lot after being married for 17 years. It was fun to travel back into time. It makes you reflect on your life.

Ongeveer twintig jaar geleden gingen we samen op ons eerste weekend in een klein kasteeltje in de buurt van Chantilly, Franrijk. Het maakte een grote indruk op ons en we probeerden onze herinneringen te visualiseren. Er is geen betere weg dan terug te gaan en het te herbeleven. 

De buitenzijde van het kasteel leek nog hetzelfde. Onze herinnering van de kamers en het restaurant was echter fantastisch, maar de realiteit echter wat teleurstellend. Waarschijnlijk zijn wij in een huwelijk van nu 17 jaar verder geëvalueerd. Het was leuk terug te reizen in de tijd. Het doet je over je leven reflecteren.

The art and furniture of Chantilly castle

The castle of Domaine de Chantilly is surround by water. A great impression but the interior is even surpassing this. We start with an incredible library and fireplace. Some of the rooms are decorated as in the palace of Versailles, at a short distance from this location. The vintage furniture is amazing.

Next to the dining room with its wall carpets, is a great painting hall. It looks similar to the Hermitage museum in St. Petersburg. It holds one of the largest painting collections of France.

Het kasteel van het Chantilly Domein is omringt door water. Een ongelooflijke indruk maar het interieur overtreft dit zelfs. We beginnen bij een ongelooflijke bibliotheek en open haard. Sommige kamers zijn gedecoreerd als in het paleis van Versailles, op enkele kilometers afstand van deze locatie. Het antieke meubilair is verbluffend. 

Naast de eetzaal met zijn wandtapijten ligt hal met schilderijen. Het lijkt wel het Hermitage in St. Petersburg. Het bevat één van de grootste collecties waardevolle schilderijen in Frankrijk.

Domaine de Chantilly, Prix d’elegance at the castle

The gardens of Chantilly castle were being prepared for the Prix d’elegance a combination of cars and fashion competition which was held for the first time in 1920. The castle is one of the most important of the French heritage and we see why. It is amazing with the gardens, statues, sculptures and water elements.

We already saw a few cars in the garden like Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, McLaren, Ferrari, Lancia and Lexus. The concept and super cars for the competition will participate in the fashion parade the day after. By that time, we are on our way to the next destination in France.

De tuinen van het Chantilly kasteel werden in gereedheid gebracht voor de Prix d’elegance, een wedstrijd voor concept auto’s in combinatie met mode. Deze wedstrijd werd voor het eerst gehouden in 1920. Dit kasteel is één van de belangrijkste Franse erfgoeden en we begrijpen waarom. De tuinen, beeldhouwwerken en waterelementen zijn ongelooflijk. 

We zagen reeds enkele auto’s in de tuin zoals: Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, McLaren, Ferrari, Lancia en Lexus. De concept en super auto’s voor de competitie gaan deelnemen in een mode parade op de volgende dag. Tegen die tijd zijn wij onderweg naar onze volgende bestemming in Frankrijk.

Domaine de Chantilly, horse museum

Chantilly is known for its horse racing track and great stables. The race track in combination with the 18th century architecture is mind blowing. You always see people interacting with horses and the stables may be visited. Upon our arrival, amazons approached us in gallop. You could feel the power of the horses and their riders. We didn’t see an equestrian demonstration but we saw dressur training.

The museum focusses on interaction of humans with horses throughout the history of civilization. How did we use horses in daily farming work and industry? There were a few very nice carriages on display. The horse also played a role in the army, sports and entertainment industry. An interesting museum to visit and encounter beautiful horses.

Chantilly staat bekend om zijn paarden racetrack en Koninklijke stallen. De race track in combinatie met de 18de eeuwse architectuur is verbluffend. Je ziet er altijd mensen die bezig zijn met paarden en de stallen mogen worden bezocht. Bij aankomst werden we tegemoet gereden door twee amazones in galop. Je kon de kracht van de paarden en hun ruiters voelen. We zagen geen equestrian demonstratie maar wel een dressuur training. 

Het museum richt zich op de interactie tussen mens en paard doorheen de geschiedenis. Hoe werden paarden gebruikt in de landbouw en industrie? Er stonden een paar indrukwekkende koetsen tentoon gesteld. Het paard speelde ook een grote rol in het leger, sport en de entertainment industrie. Een interessant museum voor een bezoekje en om mooie paarden te aanschouwen.
