Mausoleum General Eloy Alfaro Delgado, Montecristi

This is for sure the most impressive monument of Montecristi. The tomb of General Eloy Alfaro Delgado who was 22 years President of Ecuador He was the one responsible for holding together Ecuador and uniting the population of the different regions.

Next to the mausoleum you see a train because President Delgado built the railway system of Ecuador. His regime ended in 1911 when pro-catholic military took over the country. He spend his last year in jail after which he was killed in the streets of Panama by fanatics. The mausoleum has been constructed in Montecristi, the city in which Delgado was born. The tomb contains several statues and gold leave images carved into the walls.

Dit is zonder enige twijfel het meest indrukwekkende monument in Montecristi. Het graf van Generaal Eloy Alfaro Delgado die 22 jaar president was van Ecuador. Hij was verantwoordelijk voor het land samen te houden en de verschillende bevolkingsgroepen te herenigen. 

Naast het mausoleum zie je een trein want president Delgado is de pionier die de spoorwegen in Ecuador heeft geïntroduceerd. Zijn regime eindigde in 1911 met een pro katholieke staatsgreep. Zijn laatste levensjaar bracht hij door in een gevangenis waarna hij werd vermoord in de straten van Panama door een bende fanatiekelingen. Het mausoleum werd opgetrokken in Montecristi daar dit zijn geboortestad was. Het grafmonument bevat verschillende standbeelden en goudblad verwerkte gezichten in de muren.

Picnic on the Terrazas los Samanes, Montecristi

The village of Montecristi is connected to the hill top behind it by a walking path. You could compare it to hairpin curves attached to seven terraces holding green picnic areas, recreational areas for kids, tennis courts, a basketball field and gardens.

You feel this is a very popular place for locals. We were one of the few tourists going for a walk on the hill. Reaching the top, you had nice views over Montecristi.

Het dorp Montecristi is verbonden met de achterliggende heuvel door een wandelpad. Je kan het vergelijken met haarspeldbochten verbonden aan zeven terrassen die picknick mogelijkheden, speelterreinen voor kinderen, tennisvelden, een basketveld en tuinen bieden. 

Je voelt dat dit een populaire plaats is bij de lokale bevolking. Wij waren één van de weinige toeristen die de heuvelwandeling maakten. Eens boven had je een prachtig zicht over Montecristi.

Panama Hats are made in Montecristi, Ecuador

Being in the village that produces the authentic Panama Hats made us wonder if we would like to buy such a hat as souvenir. If we would do so, it had to be a hand made one of reasonable quality. We were however astonished by the price of such a hat. It ranges from $400 to over $3.000. It would be a waste to spend so much money if you never were a hat.

The craft of hand weaving hats becomes rare with the industrialisation. More and more hats are made by machines and represent poor quality. Hand weaved Panama Hats are of fine quality and water proof. Walking through the local shops we discovered many different models for ladies. The most famous model is however the white hat with black band around it.

Terwijl we in de stad waren die authentieke Panama Hoeden produceert, vroegen we ons af of we zo'n hoed zouden kopen als souvenir. Het zou dan wel een handgemaakte van redelijke kwaliteit moeten zijn. We waren echter stom verbaasd hoe hoog de prijs was, tussen de 400 en 3.000 dollars. Het zou verspilling van geld zijn als je nooit een hoed draagt. 

De ambacht van handgeweven hoeden wordt zeldzaam door de industrialisatie. Meer en meer hoeden worden machinaal gemaakt en vertegenwoordigen mindere kwaliteit. Handgeweven hoeden van fijne kwaliteit zijn tevens waterdicht. Wandelend door de hoedenwinkels toont aan dat er voor vrouwen vele verschillende modellen zijn. Het meest beroemde model is echter de witte hoed met zwarte band.

Up to now, we only saw a few completely white churches in the world. It is fascinating and for us it symbolises hope. Probably hope and a strong belief in God is what the locals stand for. The church was completely packed. People were standing at the back of the church to follow the celebration.

The white clock tower is an eye catcher and we also like the modern but simple stained glass. It completely changes the light inside the church and provides a warm feeling. You could clearly see this was relatively new compared to other interior elements of the church.

Tot nu toe zagen we slechts een handvol volledig witte kerken in de wereld. Deze zijn fascinerend en symboliseren voor ons de hoop. Waarschijnlijk is hoop en een sterk geloof in God iets wat echt in de harten van de lokale bevolking leeft. De kerk was overladen vol. Mensen stond achteraan recht om de mis bij te wonen. 

De witte kloktoren is een echte blikvanger en we hielden ook van het eenvoudige gekleurde sierglas. Ramen veranderen de lichtinval in de kerk volledig en brengen een warm gevoel binnen. Je kon goed zijn dat dit recent werd ingebouwd in vergelijking met het andere interieur.

General Impressions of Monteciristi and graffiti

Montecristi is a small village located in the mountains of Ecuador. On the Main Square, there was a market mainly focused on tourism. At a strange looking candy stand, little children showed big interest. Not only is the candy colorful but also the busses, houses and street art.

Like in most Latin American countries, graffiti is a part of daily life. This is not different in Montecristi. On one of the hill walls, it was however very professional. The main theme was revolution and fighting for freedom. A topic showing us the hard reality of Ecuadorian history.

Montecristi is een kleine stad gelegen in de Ecuadoriaanse bergen. Op het hoofdplein stond een markt zich voornamelijk richtend op toeristen. Aan een raar snoepkraam toonden kleine kinderen een bijzonder grote interesse. Niet enkel het snoep is kleurvol maar ook de bussen, huizen en straatkunst. 

Zoals in vele Zuid-Amerikaanse landen komt graffiti veel voor in het straatbeeld. Dit is ook het geval in Montecristi. Op één van de heuvelmuren was het echter heel professioneel. Het hoofdthema was de revolutie en gevecht voor de vrijheid. Een onderwerp dat ons de harde geschiedenis van Ecuador toont.
