Nyhavn in Copenhagen, just like on a postcard

The Nyhavn in Copenhagen is one of the most popular tourist areas and for good reasons. A small harbour and canal is surrounded by 17th century houses painted in bright colours. In the summer it must be great to drink a beer on one of these terraces or at the Longest Bar of Scandinavia which can be found here. The Carlsberg brand is visible at all cafés, something they are very proud of. In the harbour itself you find fisher boats, historical vessels and tour boats. Looking at the restaurant signs, fish is one of the most offered products.

The Nyhavn has also its rough side, with a Tattoo shop and the Redlight District. We were a bit surprised that the world of fish restaurants and cosy terraces are here side by side with the wild side of the nightlife. I am however very happy with my pictures of the Nyhavn and the Copenhagen Redlight.

De Nyhavn in Kopenhagen is één van de belangrijkste bezienswaardigheden van de stad en dat is volkomen terecht. De kleine haven en kanaal zijn omringt door fel gekleurde huizen uit de 17de eeuw. In de zomer moet het fantastisch zijn om hier een biertje te drinken op één van de vele terrasjes of aan de langste bar van Scandinavië. Het Carlsberg bier is overal geadverteerd, iets waar men wel trots op is. Op het water zie je visserssloepen, historische vaartuigen en rondvaartboten voor toeristen. Aan de restaurant uithangborden te zien wordt hier veel vis geserveerd. 

De Nyhavn heeft echter ook zijn ruw kantje met een Tattoo shop en het Redlight district. We waren verbaasd dat de wereld van visrestaurants en gezellige terrasjes hier hand in hand met het wilde nachtleven van Kopenhagen samen gaan. We zijn wel heel blij met onze foto’s van de Nyhavn en de Copenhagen Redlight..

The two faces of Christiansborg Palace in Copenhagen

On these grounds there have been many palaces and royal buildings. Some of them were destroyed and only the ruins remain. The Christiansborg Palace is an enormous building that has undergone construction works for more than 200 years. New parts of the building were added until 1928 so that it has now become a multipurpose palace. It is used by the Royal Family, the parliament, the Prime Minister, the Supreme Court, is a museum and it even contains the Royal stables. On the inner court the stable masters are training the horses.

What we found surprising is that the views of the palace at the front from Vindebrogade, are very different than from the inner court and from the Christians Brygge where you find the entrance gate for the horse carriages. It almost looks like these are two different buildings.

Op deze plaats hebben er verschillende paleizen en Koninklijke gebouwen gestaan. Sommige werden vernietigd en enkel de ruïnes blijven over. Het Christiansborg Paleis is enorm groot en heeft voor meer dan 200 jaar verbouwingswerken ondergaan. Nieuwe delen werden toegevoegd tot in 1928 en nu wordt het paleis voor vele doeleinden gebruikt. Het is multifunctioneel en dient de Koninklijke Familie, huisvest het Parlement en de Eerste Minister, het Hooggerechtshof, het is een museum en er zijn ook nog de Koninklijke stallen. Op het binnenplein worden paarden door de stalmeesters getraind. 

Wat ons verbaasde was dat het paleis er totaal anders uit ziet van de Vindebrogade aan de voorkant, dan vanuit het binnenplein of de achterzijde aan de Christians Brygge waar de ingang voor de paardenkoetsen is. Het lijkt net of het twee andere gebouwen zijn..

The Old Stock Exchange building of Copenhagen

When you look at the Old Copenhagen Stock Exchange building located on Børsgade you immediately see the Dragon spire. The peak of the tower represents twisted dragon tails. Who thinks of such a thing? The building was designed by King Christian of Denmark and completed in 1640. It is one of the heritage buildings of Copenhagen. The active stock exchange has been moved to a new building but the OMX Nordic Exchange still has his offices here. The building is privately owned and a sign clearly indicates that visitors were not allowed inside the building. A pity because the exchange hall now used for events is supposed to be very beautiful.

Als je kijkt naar het Oude Beursgebouw van Kopenhagen gelegen op de Børsgade, valt de ongebruikelijke stijl van de toren onmiddellijk op. Die piek zou gedraaide drakenstaarten uitbeelden. Wie vindt dit toch uit? Het gebouw werd ontworpen door Koning Christian van Denemarken en werd voltooid in 1640. Het is één van de erfgoedgebouwen uit Kopenhagen. De huidige beurs is verplaatst naar een nieuw gebouw maar de OMX Nordic Exchange heeft nog steeds zijn kantoren hier. Het gebouw is in privé eigendom en een bordje toont aan dat bezoekers niet naar binnen mogen. Een spijtige zaak daar de beurshal, die nu enkel wordt gebruikt voor evenementen, zeer mooi schijnt te zijn..

The City Hall of Copenhagen is located on the City Hall Square. The building is about 100 years old, has a 107 metre high clock tower, statues on the roof, dragon images guard the access towards the door and a giant shield hangs against the walls. Just above the entrance, Bishop Absalon keeps an eye at all the people entering the City Hall. The copper statue of the main advisor of the Danish King during the 12th century shines brightly, it almost looks like gold.

When you enter the building you arrive in an enormous hall. It looks like the City Hall is almost an empty box. We were however impressed with the stained glass and mosaics. The mosaics are found in different shapes, in fish motives, below the arched ceilings and at the staircases.

Het stadhuis van Kopenhagen is gelegen op het City Hall Square of het Stadhuisplein. Het gebouw is ongeveer 100 jaar oud, heeft een 107 meter hoge kloktoren, standbeelden op het dak, draken die de toegangsweg naar de deur bewaken, en er hangt een enorm schild tegen de muur. Juist boven het ingangsportaal, kijkt Bisschop Absalon neer op de naderende bezoekers. Het koperen beeld van de belangrijkste raadsman van de Deense Koning gedurende de 12de eeuw blinkt zo fel dat je zou denken dat het van goud is. 

Van zodra je het stadhuis binnenkomt ben je in een grote open ruimte. Het lijkt net alsof het stadhuis een lege doos is. We waren echter onder de indruk van het brandglas en de mozaïeken. De mozaïeken kunnen worden teruggevonden in allerlei vormen, in vismotief, onder de booggewelven en aan de siertrappen..

General impressions of life with the sea and tourism in Copenhagen

Copenhagen is located at the sea and has many inner harbours. The small city ports are multi purpose: cruise ships, military vessels, fisher boats, yachts and sailing boats. The sea is a major source of economic activity for Copenhagen. Just outside the city they produce green electricity with gigantic wind mills.

We like how Copenhagen is adding modern art and colourful displays to its city centre full of classical buildings. It gives it a younger touch, something playful. Just looks at the internet pyramids, the billboards, the taxis, the Viking trolls…

Most squares in Copenhagen are busy. Tourists look at the historical architecture and enjoy a snack or drink at one of the small antique kiosks. Such a round kiosk with their cute tower is just big enough to have one sales person in it. Copenhagen is a good destination for a city trip but less on Mondays when many of the point of interests are closed.

Kopenhagen is gelegen aan de zee en heeft vele binnenhavens. De kleine stadshavens lenen zich tot verschillende activiteiten: aanleg van Cruiseschepen, militaire boten, jachten, vissloepen en zeilboten. De zee is een belangrijke bron van inkomsten en economische activiteit voor Kopenhagen. Net buiten de stad, in zee, zie je de productie van elektriciteit via reuze windmolens. 

We vinden het leuk hoe Kopenhagen moderne kunst en kleurvolle elementen aan zijn klassiek getinte stad toevoegt. Het geeft het een jongere toets, iets speels. Als voorbeeld verwijzen we naar de kleurrijke internet piramides, de reclameborden, de taxi’s, de Viking trollen… 

De meeste pleinen van Kopenhagen zijn druk bezocht. Toeristen kijken naar de mooie historische architectuur en genieten van een snack of drankje aan kleine antieke kiosken. Deze kiosken met hun torentje zijn net groot genoeg voor één verkoper in te plaatsen. Kopenhagen is een leuke stad voor een city trip maar minder op maandag wanneer er vele bezienswaardigheden gesloten zijn..
