Church of St Catherine where Christmas has a special meaning, Bethlehem

The church of St. Catherine in Bethlehem is very nice. Rather simple but you get a good feeling of the interior. The arches on the ceiling are yellow and provide a warm atmosphere. On the entrance square you see the statue of St. Jerome who was a local bible translator. The church which is located next to the Grotto of the Nativity is the location from where on Christmas Eve, a mass is broadcasted to the whole world. Before the mass a Christmas procession takes place in the streets of Bethlehem. So even if you have not been here, it could be that you have seen this church on TV.

De kerk van van Sint Catherine in Bethlehem is zeer mooi. Wat eenvoudig maar je krijgt een goed gevoel bij het interieur, de gele plafondbogen zorgen voor een warme sfeer. Bij het inkomplein vindt je een standbeeld van St. Jerome, een lokale Bijbelvertaler. De kerk is gelegen naast de Grot van de Geboorte. Dit is de locatie waar op kerstavond de beroemde Kerstmis van Bethlehem wereldwijd wordt uitgezonden. Gedurende die dag gaat er ook een Kerstprocessie uit in de straten van Bethlehem. Zelfs al ben je hier nog niet geweest, het kan zijn dat je op kerstavond deze kerk reeds gezien hebt op TV..

Bethlehem City and wall

Bethlehem is a city on the West bank under control of the Palestinian Authorities. What could we expect? We had already heard that Israeli are not allowed to enter this area. This was true a few years ago but now it is more flexible. Our guide could join us on the touring car but was not allowed to speak as long as we were in Palestine. This is not a joke, it was really enforced by the local appointed Palestinian guide who had a very hard and dominant personality. Many of the tourists had an unpleasant feeling about his attitude. Entering the city we had to pass a huge wall separating the West bank from Jerusalem. This wall has been constructed to avoid suicide bombers entering Israeli territory. The visit of the city was an adventure, before reaching the Church of the Nativity we had to get two times military approval. Around the town you have spectacular views of the dessert and hills. Before leaving the West Bank there was an obligatory shopping stop where hard selling techniques ruled.

Bethlehem is een stad gelegen op de West Bank en onder controle van de Palestijnse autoriteiten. Wat konden we verwachten? We hadden reeds gehoord dat Israëli niet in dit gebied toegelaten zijn. Dit was inderdaad zo enkele jaren geleden maar is nu wat flexibeler. Onze gids mocht mee met de bus maar had verbod te spreken zolang we in Palestina waren. Dit is geen grap, het werd zeer strikt toegepast door de aangeduide Palestijnse begeleider die een zeer harde en dominante houding had. Vele van de bezoekers hadden een onbehaaglijk gevoel met zijn persoonlijkheid. Toen we de stad binnenreden moesten we langs een enorme muur die de West Bank van Jeruzalem scheidt. De muur werd gebouwd om zelfmoordterroristen met als doel Jeruzalem tegen te houden. Het bezoek aan de stad was een avontuur, we dienden verschillende militaire controleposten te passeren. In de stad heb je spectaculaire vergezichten op de woestijn en de heuvels. Vooraleer te vertrekken uit de West Bank moesten we nog stoppen voor een verplicht winkelbezoek waar zeer assertieve verkooptechnieken werden toegepast..

Grotto of the Nativity - Why Bethlehem instead of Nazareth? The flight to Egypt.

Travel article Nr. 3 related to the important historical places in the “Life of Jesus”.

It was very busy in the Basilica and we had to wait in line together with many other people to enter the Grotto. At the place Jesus was born, they placed a silver star on the ground, representing the star the three wise men followed to find the Holy child. It was a strange experience and we could all touch the star and the place Jesus was born. Why was he born in this cave in Bethlehem? Well 2.000 years ago this was the town of David and the city were Joseph came from. All people had to be counted and registered and for that reason Joseph and Maria travelled to Bethlehem, expecting their son to be born soon. They did not find a sleeping place and stayed in the grotto. After the birth of Jesus, an angel spoke to some shepherds about the new born messiah. News spread and king Herod ordered three wise men to investigate what was going on. The wise men found the Holy family and Jesus and showed their respect, they did not return to Herod who was afraid of his position as king of Jews. After discovering that the wise men betrayed King Herod, the king ordered his soldiers to kill all young boys up to 2 years old in his kingdom, as revenge and with the goal also to kill Jesus. This was on 28 December, the day of the innocent children. In the middle of the night, an angel warned Joseph and Maria, they escaped to Egypt and stayed there for several years until king Herod died.

Het was zeer druk in de Basiliek en we moesten redelijk lang wachten om de grot binnen te gaan. Op de plaats waar Jezus geboren werd ligt nu een zilveren ster op de grond, deze stelt de ster voor die de wijze mannen hebben gevolgd in hun zoektocht naar het Heilige kind. Het was een unieke ervaring en alle bezoekers konden de ster en plaats van geboorte aanraken. Waarom werd Jezus in deze grot in Bethlehem geboren? Ongeveer 2.000 geleden was dit de stad van David, het dorp waar Joseph oorspronkelijk vandaan kwam. Alle mensen moesten geregistreerd zijn en uit deze beweegreden gingen Joseph en Maria naar Bethlehem (stad van David) in blije verwachting van de geboorte van hun zoon. Ze konden geen plaats vinden om te overnachten en kwamen in deze grot terecht. Na de geboorte van Jezus verkondigde een engel aan enkele schaapherders dat de Messias geboren was. Het nieuws verspreidde zich snel en de ongeruste koning Herodes stuurde drie wijze mannen op onderzoek uit. De wijze mannen ontdekten de Heilige familie en toonden hun respect. Ze besloten niet terug te keren naar de koning. Toen Herodes hun verraad ontdekte liet hij uit wraak op 28 december alle mannelijke kinderen jonger dan twee jaar ombrengen, de dag van de onschuldige kinderen. Hij hoopte ook Jezus te doden, die hij zag als een bedreiging voor zijn troon. In het midden van de nacht werden Joseph en Maria gewaarschuwd door een engel en vluchten zij naar Egypte. Ze bleven daar tot na de dood van Koning Herodes..

Basilica of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Palestine

The Basilica of the Nativity was constructed at the end of the 6th century at the same place where Jesus was born. This is still the original 1.400 year old church. During the Persian wars at the beginning of the 7th century, the church was spared because it contained a Persian mosaic floor. The interior is very simple, if you take away the altar, religious art pieces and the chandeliers, you would think you are in a factory hall. We particularly liked the Russian Chandeliers who were a gift from the Tsar dynasty. On top of the roof of the church you see the Jerusalem cross. On each square of the cross, you see another cross representing the wind directions and/or the injuries of the crucifixion. A smaller version of such a cross is only for sale in Israel. In our next article we will describe our visit to the grotto where Jesus was born. It is located underneath this church.

De Basiliek van de geboorte werd gebouwd op het einde van de 6de eeuw op dezelfde plaats waar Jezus ter aarde kwam. Dit is nog steeds de originele 1.400 jaar oude kerk. Gedurende de Perzische oorlogen aan het begin van de 7de eeuw werd deze kerk gespaard daar het een Perzisch mozaïeken vloer had. De binnenkant is zeer eenvoudig en als je altaar, de kunstwerken en de sierlusters wegdenkt, zou je denken in een fabriekshal te staan. In het bijzonder vonden we de sierlusters die een geschenk van de Russische Tsaren waren heel mooi. Op het dak van de kerk zie je een groot Kruis van Jeruzalem. Het is een gelijkbenig kruis met in ieder vak een kleiner kruis die de windrichtingen en/of de wonden van de kruisiging voorstellen. Een kleinere versie van zo'n kruis is enkel in Israël te koop.
