General Impressions of Aruba beaches and Oranjestad

Aruba is one our favorite islands in the Caribbean. We start our day in the north, on Arashi Beach. This is a top location for swimming, snorkeling and relaxing. It is close to the California Lighthouse and easy to reach with public transport.

On our way back to the capital of Aruba, we stop at Palm Beach. This is the place to be for hotels, restaurants and water sports. Walking alongside the coast is fantastic. We love the colorful chairs and wooden constructions. You also see many lizards, birds, crab and pelicans.

The last stretch to Oranjestad we do in an open taxi bus. Here you find the cruise port and many shopping opportunities. Enjoy this beautiful city on Aruba.

Aruba is één van onze favoriete eilanden in the Caribische Zee. We beginnen in het noorden op Arashi Beach. Een top locatie voor het zwemmen, snorkelen en te ontspannen. Het ligt dicht bij het California Lighthouse en eenvoudig te bereiken met het openbaar vervoer.

Onderweg naar de hoofdstad van Aruba, stoppen we op Palm Beach. Dit is de badplaats met de meeste hotels, restaurants en watersporten. Langs de kustlijn lopen is fantastisch. We houden van die kleurrijke stoelen en houten constructies. Je ziet er vele leguanen, vogels, krabben en pelikanen. 

Het laatste stuk naar Oranjestad overbruggen we met een taxibus. Hier is de cruise port en vind je alle winkeltjes. Geniet van deze mooie stad op Aruba.

A great tip for cruise passengers, free and guaranteed lizard spotting, Aruba

When your cruise ship docks, you sometimes want to explore the port area by yourself instead of booking an excursion. In this article we explain how to spot lizards in Aruba after a short easy walk alongside shops and the yacht harbour. This is a tip for your own free tour in Oranjestad, Aruba.

Walk out the port and turn right on the L.G. Smith Boulevard. About 500m further on your right site, you see the shopping centre of the Renaissance Ocean Suites and here you go to the right again. After 100m you reach the end of the garden and see the rock formations. You have an excellent view on the cruise ships and the lizards. They are just everywhere and some of them are more than a metre long.

At a certain moment Kristel stood next to a bush and I said to her: turn a little bit to the right, there was a green lizard eating leaves and he was sitting about 50cm from here shoulder. The lizards are masters in camouflage; they are grey on the rocks and green in the bushes. We really enjoyed taking photo’s there.

Als je cruise schip in de haven ligt, wil je soms zonder begeleiding de stad in trekken, in plaats van een excursie te boeken. Dit artikel beschrijft hoe je enorme hagedissen in de natuur van Aruba kan spotten. Na een kleine gemakkelijke wandeling langs winkeltjes en de jachthaven bereik je de ideale spotplaats. Dit is een tip voor uw eigen gratis uitstap in Oranjestad. 

Je wandelt de haven uit en gaat naar rechts op de L.G. Smith Boulevard. Na 500m zie je op de rechterzijde het winkelcentrum van de Renaissance Ocean Suites, hier ga je terug naar rechts. Na 100m bereik je het einde van de tuin en zie je de rotsformaties. Wat een fantastisch zicht op de cruiseschepen en hagedissen. De grijze en groene kleppers liggen overal en sommigen zijn meer als een meter lang. 

Op een bepaald moment staat Kristel naast een struik en zeg ik: draai je traag om naar rechts. Er was een enorme groene hagedis bladeren aan het eten op ongeveer 50cm van haar schouder. De hagedissen zijn meesters in camouflage, op de rotsen zijn ze grijs, in de struiken groen. We hebben echt genoten hier foto’s te trekken..

The Banana Bus and shopping in Oranjestad, Aruba

Aruba is an island of the Dutch Antilles but you do not expect to see a Holland windmill surrounded by palm trees. Oranjestad has a small yacht harbour next to the cruise port. We took a picture of a small fisher boat in front of the giant Caribbean Princess cruise ship. The distance between the two boats should not be underestimated so don’t start swimming.

Next to very colourful houses and busses like the Banana Bus, Oranjestad has nice bars, historical towers, parks, statues and lots of friendly people who have fun. The best shopping areas according to us are on the L.G. Smith Blvd. in front of the port and the Caya G. F. Betico Croes, a street which is being renovated to the best you can imagine. If you want to find extravagant and flashy clothing, in Oranjestad, you will find it.

Aruba is een eiland van de Nederlandse Antillen maar je verwacht toch geen Hollandse windmolens te zien tussen de palmbomen. Oranjestad heeft een kleine jachthaven naast de cruisekade. We namen een foto van een kleine vissersboot in de voorgrond van het enorme Caribbean Princess cruiseschip. De afstand tussen de twee boten mag niet worden onderschat dus ga niet proberen te zwemmen. 

Naast de kleurvolle huizen en bussen zoals de Banaanbus, heeft Oranjestad leuke bars, historische torens, parken, standbeelden en vele vriendelijke mensen die plezier maken. De beste winkelstraten zijn volgens ons L.G. Smith Blvd. voor de haven en de Caya G. F. Betico Croes, een winkelstraat die wordt gerenoveerd tot iets formidabel. Als je moderne, flashy en extravagante kledij zoekt, zal je deze hier zeker vinden..
