Parliament and bridges, Budapest by night

It is always hard to take night pictures from a distance. We are on the Buda hill and the parliament is far away. We cannot leave without a reasonable shot. Walking down to the Danube river bank, we have great views of the castle.

On our walk through the city we enjoyed the bright bridges and led historical buildings. We always take our tripod when visiting big cities for more than one day. Night shots are spectacular but take a long time.

Het is altijd moeilijk nachtfoto's te nemen van op een grote afstand. Wij staan op de Buda heuvel en het parlement is heel ver weg. We kunnen niet vertrekken zonder een redelijke foto. Naar beneden wandelend tot aan de Danube rivier hebben we prachtige zichten op het kasteel. 

Op onze nachtwandeling door de stad genoten we van de verlichte bruggen en historische gebouwen. We nemen altijd onze tripod mee als we verschillende dagen in een grote stad verblijven. Nachtfoto's kunnen spectaculair zijn maar nemen veel tijd in beslag.

The night falls on the wall paintings of the Citadella in Budapest

The Citadella on the Buda side of Budapest is a fortress on the hill top overlooking the Danube River. We are walking alongside the river and the light disappears fast. There is just enough time to take a few pictures of the walls and steps leading to the Citadella.

People who like wall paintings will be in for a treat. The walls and gate houses are so fantastic. Certainly below the arches the paintings are so divers, all kinds of patterns against a surprising black background.

De Citadel aan de Boeda zijde van Boedapest is een fort op de top van de heuvel, neerkijkend op de Danube rivier. Wij wandelden langs de oever en het werd snel donker. Er was nog net genoeg tijd om enkele foto’s te trekken van de Citadel muren en trappen. 

Mensen die van fresco’s en muurschilderijen houden zullen hier in hun nopjes zijn. De muren en de wachthuizen zijn fantastisch. Zeker onder de bogen zijn de schilderwerken zo divers met allerlei patronen tegen een verrassende zwarte achtergrond.

Size and decorations matter, the Stefanus Basilica in Budapest

The Stefanus Basilica is one of the largest churches in the world and the Hungarians are proud of this. It has a capacity of more than 8.000 people, a landmark of Budapest and one of the symbols of the country. The dome dominates the view of the church and the city skyline.

The interior is richly decorated but a bit dark. It was very difficult to take reasonable pictures. What impressed us the most were the altars, wall and ceiling paintings. It is rare that a church contains so much detail.

De Stefanuskerk is één van de grootste ter wereld en de Hongaren zijn hier trots op. Met zijn capaciteit van meer als 8.000 mensen is het een top bezienswaardigheden in Boedapest en een icoon voor het land. De hoge koepel domineert het zicht van de kerk en de skyline van de stad. 

Het interieur is rijk gedecoreerd maar wat donker. Het was er moeilijk redelijke foto's te trekken. We waren het meest onder de indruk van de grote altaren, muur en plafondschilderijen. Het is uitzonderlijk dat een kerk zo veel details bevat.

Windows to the trains at Budapest Central Station

Most people arrive in a big city by train and we were expecting more visitors in the Central Station. It was however a Sunday so less professional commuters. In the morning it was rather cold so we had to carry our jacket. Its early afternoon now and most clouds are chased away.

The Central Station has a fascinating two colored facade with many statues. Both left and right in yellow simple construction but in the middle superb architecture with enormous glass surfaces. Windows are curved and decorated with metal art work. The inside of the station holds a huge hall were the trains arrive.

In een grootstad arriveren de meeste mensen per trein dus hadden we meer reizigers in het station verwacht. Het was echter zondag, dus minder huis werk pendelaars. 'S morgens was het nog koud dus moesten we ons jasje dragen. Nu, in de vroege namiddag zijn de meest wolken weggejaagd. 

Het Centraal Station heeft een fascinerende twee kleurige gevel met veel beeldhouwwerken. Zowel links en rechts een eenvoudige gele constructie maar in het midden een super architecturaal hoogstandje met enorme oppervlaktes glaswerk. De ramen zijn gebogen en versierd met metaal kunstwerk. Binnen in het station is er één grote hal waar de treinen aankomen.
