General Impressions of Lima, the capital of Peru

Lima is an enormous city which stretches out over 60 km. Many districts look similar but the historical city center and Miraflores are the most impressive. The first pictures are from the more modern district of Miraflores at the coast. Here are most of the shops and live most of the expats. It is also in Miraflores that the United Nations have their offices. The historical city center is the most interesting with courts, churches, the presidential palace and monasteries to mention a few examples.

People are very friendly but we took a guide. You should not underestimate Lima and minimize all risks. The traffic in the city is hell and when you don’t know what you are doing, you are in trouble. Sometimes it takes one hour to cover 10 km. It is not exactly known but there are almost 10 million inhabitants in Lima.

Our guide explained that Lima is now very safe, the population took the security in their own hands. During the big crisis between 1989 and 1992, inflation rose to 12.000%, it resulted in total chaos and it was extremely unsafe. Crime was the only way to survive. The people of Lima were tired of crime and took security in their own hands like it is still the case today. With all the police, the army, militants and private security, our guide claimed the city is now very safe. When something would happen, everyone will come to your aid. As European you should be careful, definitions of safety can vary from country to country.

Among the pictures you find typical Peruvian products like coffee, cacao, Pisco and for us the most important the Peruvian cuisine. Our next articles will focus on the most famous attractions of Lima.

  1. The buildings and statues are impressive. This is a very smart suggestion about their idea of safety versus ours.
