General Impressions of Aguas Calientes or Machu Picchu Pueblo

We arrived in Aguas Caleintes by train, the only transportation possible for tourists. This small town in full expansion has only one source of income: tourism to Machu Picchu. This is also the reason why the town has two names: Aguas Caleintes and Machu Picchu Pueblo. The train tracks run straight through the colorful streets and this is a special when you enjoy a drink or meal on one of the outdoor restaurants.

We liked all the colors, the lights in the evening, statues, bars, shops and restaurants. Everywhere you see advertising for massages. One particular billboard was special referring to the Inka Hands Spa. It looked very professional and had a Peruvians touch like the Inka Massage and the Rumi Inka stone massage.

What really blew us away was the Urubamba River. When we saw this river in the Sacred Valley and Ollantaytambo, it was calm, almost still water. Here in the mountains it is transformed in raging waters. When you fall in this river, you are death. No doubt about that. The Urubamba River in Aguas Calientes is by far the wildest river we have ever seen.

  5. What amazing shots you got of this wild river... hope you were not standing in the middle of it on a rock to get the shots. Also, quite an outfit this dog has on.
