Cathedral of Saint Mary Major, Marseille

Walking from the Old Port, you see this Romanesque and Byzantine church on the hill. The church was built in the 19th century on top of the remains of a 12th century small church. This is one of the largest cathedrals in France. Let's start climbing the stairs.

The facade looks very robust and contains different color combinations of crème and brown. It gives the building a stronger appearance. Four domes make the church unique. Inside, the walls of the ship are honored with flags of European countries. It is a bit dark but this was in line with our expectations.

Wandelend van de Oud Haven, zie je een Romaneske en Byzantijnse kerk op de heuvel. De kerk werd gebouwd in de 19de eeuw bovenop de overblijfselen van een kleinere 12de eeuwse kerk. Dit is één van de grootste kathedralen van Frankrijk. Laten ons maar de trappen beklimmen. 

De gevel ziet er enorm sterk uit en is opgebouwd in verschillende kleurlagen van crème tot bruin. Het geeft de kerk een krachtigere uitstraling. De vier koepels maken het geheel uniek. Binnen worden de muren van het schip geëerd met vlaggen van de Europese landen. Het is er wat donker maar dit was te verwachten.

Conservative Nativity of Christ Cathedral, Riga

This must have been one of the most conservative churches we have ever visited. The exterior is hidden a bit by surrounding trees but the orthodox Russian architecture is very special. When you walk by, we would recommend to have a look inside, don't go out of your way to see it.

Inside we were not allowed to take pictures and women had to wear a scarf. It seemed like time stood still here for a few centuries. Kristel was not happy about it and hardly entered the church.

Dit moet de meest conservatieve kerk zijn die we ooit hebben bezocht. Het exterieur is een beetje verborgen achter bomen maar de Russisch Orthodoxe architectuur is heel speciaal. Als je hier voorbij wandelt, raden we je aan eens binnen een kijkje te nemen. Het is echter geen toegewijd bezoek waard. 

Binnen mochten er geen foto's genomen worden en vrouwen waren verplicht een hoofddoek te dragen. Het leek net of de tijd hier enkele eeuwen stil heeft gestaan. Kristel was hier voor niet in de mood en trad amper de kerk binnen.

Neoclassical cathedral of Santiago de Chile

The cathedral of Santiago de Chile is one of the top attractions of the city and for good reasons. It is located on Plaza de Armas and was constructed during the 18th century. The twin church towers provide a good picture opportunity but the most photographed shot is the cathedral tower reflected in the glass of a modern tower across the street.

Looking at the interior, we saw an amazing ceiling and richly decorated church. There were many locals praying like in most South American cities. In the chapel Our Lady and child were wearing beautiful dresses. In front of the statues stood flags of Chile and Santiago.

De kathedraal van Santiago de Chile is één van de top attracties van de stad en met reden. Ze is gelegen op Plaza de Armas en werd gebouwd gedurende de 18de eeuw. Je kan mooie foto's maken van de twee kerktorens maar het meest populaire shot van de stad is de torenreflectie in het glas van het moderne gebouw aan de overkant van de straat. 

Het plafond in de kerk is verbluffend en rijk gedecoreerd. Redelijk wat lokale mensen waren aan het bidden zoals in veel Zuid-Amerikaanse steden. In de zijkapel droegen Onze Lieve Vrouw en kind mooie jurken. Voor de beelden stonden de vlaggen van Chili en Santiago.

Stained glass in the Cathedral of La Serena, Chile

This church located on Plaza de Armas was built in the 19th century and is similar to European churches. Maybe because it was designed by the French architect Herbage. All tough not visible from the exterior, the stained glass art work was for us the most attractive element of the church. Next to that the arched painted ceiling and organ were also eye catchers.

Deze kerk gelegen op Plaza de Armas werd gebouwd gedurende de 19de eeuw en vertoont gelijkenissen met Europese kerken. Misschien omdat ze werd ontworpen door de Franse architect Herbage. Alhoewel dit niet zichtbaar is aan de buitenzijde vonden we de sierglazen de meest attractieve elementen van de kerk. Daarnaast konden we zeker het orgel en plafond waarderen.

Experience the altitude and visit Plaza de Armas, Cusco

We flew to Cusco with an airline called "Star Peru". It was a small plane and the whole flight we couldn't see anything but mountains. That was quite a surprise. We arrived on time in Cusco and at the moment we stepped out of the plane we felt exhausted after taking just a few steps. What's going on? Our body is not used to this altitude of 3.500 meters or 11.500 feet. We are going to hike between 8.000 and 15.000 feet for the next 7 days, so get used to it quickly. Maybe we started this too early, still fighting our jetlag but you can't change things now.

A valuable tip, do not forget to consult your doctor before you go to high altitude regions for a longer time and take medication with you, many people are affected and need to take altitude pills or extra oxygen.

Our guide awaits us at the exit. The first thing she says is: you were lucky you could land! The clouds are often so low, like this morning that flights have to return to Lima. Nice place Cusco, we are already thinking if we will be able to leave Cusco on time for our flight to Buenos Aires and we haven't started our Peruvian adventure yet.

We are dropped off at the hotel and have two hours to discover our room. Needless to say that within 30 minutes we are exploring the nearby streets, although we said we were going to do everything with a guide in this "so called" dangerous continent.

We walked to Plaza de Armas with the Cathedral and an other church. In the middle you see a fountain of an Inca King. The houses around the square are all restaurants and on the first floor you have nice terraces. It is impressive to see how all the houses are built up the mountains. In the evening we returned to have diner here.

We vlogen naar Cusco met een luchtvaartmaatschappij die "Star Peru" heet. Het was een klein vliegtuig en het enige dat we de gehele reis zagen, waren bergen. Dat was een verrassing. We kwamen op tijd aan maar na enkele stappen wandelen waren we reeds uitgeput. Wat gebeurd er? Ons lichaam is niet aangepast aan deze hoogte van 3.500 meter. We gaan zeven dagen rondtrekken op een hoogte van 2.500 tot 4.500 meter kunnen we maar er beter snel aan wennen. Misschien was het niet zo verstandig met onze jetlag hier direct aan te beginnen maar gedane zaken nemen geen keer.

Een belangrijke tip, vergeet je dokter niet te raadplegen vooraleer langere tijd op grote hoge te verblijven. Neem zeker medicatie met je mee, vele mensen voelen zich onwel en dienen pillen of extra zuurstof te worden toegediend.

Onze gids stond reeds klaar aan de uitgang. Het eerste dat ze zij was: jullie hebben geluk gehad dat het vliegtuig kon landen. De wolken hangen heel laag en regelmatig moeten vliegtuigen terug keren naar Lima. Een leuke plaats Cusco, wij vragen ons reeds af hoe we op tijd gaan terug vliegen voor onze connectie vlucht naar Buenos Aires en we zijn ons Peruviaans avontuur nog niet begonnen.

We worden naar het hotel gebracht en krijgen twee uren de tijd om ons klaar te maken. Na 30 minuten stonden we al op straat, de buurt te verkennen. We hadden nochtans afgesproken in de zogenaamde "gevaarlijke continent" er niet alleen op uit te trekken. 

We wandelden naar Plaza de Armas met zijn kathedraal, een andere kerk en fontein van een Inka Koning. Alle huizen rond de markt zijn restaurants, van op het eerste verdiep heb je er een prachtig zicht. De huizen van Cusco zijn tegen de bergen opgebouwd. 's avond keerden we hier terug voor een romantisch etentje.
