Stained glass in the Cathedral of La Serena, Chile

This church located on Plaza de Armas was built in the 19th century and is similar to European churches. Maybe because it was designed by the French architect Herbage. All tough not visible from the exterior, the stained glass art work was for us the most attractive element of the church. Next to that the arched painted ceiling and organ were also eye catchers.

Deze kerk gelegen op Plaza de Armas werd gebouwd gedurende de 19de eeuw en vertoont gelijkenissen met Europese kerken. Misschien omdat ze werd ontworpen door de Franse architect Herbage. Alhoewel dit niet zichtbaar is aan de buitenzijde vonden we de sierglazen de meest attractieve elementen van de kerk. Daarnaast konden we zeker het orgel en plafond waarderen.

Crystal Museum with its private collection, Malaga

We found the name of this museum on a tourist map and since we like crystal, we decided to pay it visit. The entrance fee was five euro and you had to stay with the guide on your tour in this 18th century house. The house and collection is owned by three retired people with family members in the noblesse. Many of the pieces were gifts from churches or part of a heritage.

Besides crystal glass from many different periods and regions, they also have a large collection of paintings and furniture. We especially liked the church windows of stained glass; a local carpenter makes the wooden frames. It was a very interesting visit which lasted for about 1,5 hours. This was a little bit too long for us but this is personal taste. A museum worth a visit.

We vonden de naam van dit museum op een toeristenkaart van Malaga. Daar we van kristal houden besloten we dat we dit zeker niet mochten overslaan. De inkom was vijf euro en een gids begeleide je door het 18de eeuwse herenhuis. Het huis en de collectie zijn eigendom van drie gepensioneerden met familiebanden in de adel. Vele kunstwerken zijn giften van kerken of erfstukken. 

Naast kristal en glas uit verschillende tijdsperiodes en regio's, bezit men ook een grote collectie schilderijen en meubels. In het bijzonder waren we onder de indruk van sierglas ramen uit oude kerken die werden ingekaderd door een lokale timmerman. Het was een interessant bezoek dat ongeveer 1,5 uur duurde. Iets te lang naar onze mening maar dit is persoonlijk smaak. Het Crystal Museum in Malaga is zeker een bezoekje waard.

Amazing forest interior of the Sagrada Familia, Barcelona

Unlike the exterior, the interior of the Sagrada Familia is almost completed. Don't hesitate to pay for the entry ticket, it is well worth it. The main features of the interior are the columns and ceiling, they represent a forest. You can recognise the trunks, branches and leaves. Antoni Gaudi plays with the light of the stained glass to display the sun shining through the forest roof.

Everything is new and looks so modern. Don't forget this concept is more than hundred years old. The church is exceptional and makes you speechless as soon as you enter. We have been in so many churches but nothing even comes close to the Sagrada Familia. The green, brown and orange light from the forest leaves enter via the exterior walls.

The ceiling supported by giant trunks (columns) is decorated with circular medallions. In the centre of the church you see Jesus on the cross, looking upwards into a large umbrella representing heaven. Attention is drawn to it by the lights around the umbrella. Behind Jesus stands a silver organ.

It is always very crowded and expect waiting lines of at least 30 minutes to enter Gaudi's Temple. The chapel on the underground level is visible through glass from the church. Many people are attending celebrations. We end our Sagrada Familia article with an amazing picture of coloured light from Gaudi's imaginary forest.

In tegenstelling tot de buitenkant is het interieur van de Sagrada Familia bijna afgewerkt. Aarzel niet de inkom te betalen, het bezoek is de prijs zeker waard. Voor ons zijn de zuilen en plafond het allermooist, ze beelden een bos uit. Je kan de stammen, takken en bladeren herkennen. Antoni Gaudi laat het zonlicht via het brandglas het bos schijnen.

Alles is nieuw en lijkt modern. Vergeet echter niet dat dit ontwerp meer als honderd jaar oud is. De kerk is uitzonderlijk en men wordt sprakeloos van zodra je binnen komt. We hebben reeds zoveel kerken bezocht maar niets komt in de buurt van de Sagrada Familia. Het groene, bruine en oranje licht van de bos bladeren valt de kerk binnen via de zijgevels.

Het plafond gedecoreerd met medaillons wordt ondersteund door enorme boomstammen of zuilen. In het midden zie je Jezus aan het kruis, hij kijkt naar boven in een grote parasol die de hemel voorstelt. Je aandacht wordt er naar toe getrokken door verlichting. Achter Jezus zie je zilveren orgelpijpen. 

Het is altijd druk in de kerk en hou rekening met een minimum wachttijd van 30 minuten voor de ingang van Gaudi's Tempel te bereiken. De kapel waar men erediensten houdt is ondergronds gelegen, je kan via een venster in de kerk een kijkje nemen. Vele gelovigen zijn in de kapel. The Gesu Catholic Church of Miami

This church is located near Government Center on the corner of North East 1st and 2nd Street. It was the first catholic church of Miami and the oldests one, it was built in the same decade as the Freedom Tower in 1922. The architecture and design of the church building is exceptional, you don't find many churches in this unconvientional style. The interior was surprising, the ceilings were rather low but the stained glass windows fantastic. This is not really obvious when you look at the exterior of the church.

The name Gesu comes from the Italian translation of Jesus. The church is very active in the community and we could feel this during our visit. Specialy for older citizens in need, the church provides admirable services. Each day they provide breakfast and lunch in the church cantine for only one dollar and this already for 35 years.

De kerk is gelegen aan het Government Centre op de hoek van North East 1st en 2nd Street. Het was de eerste en nu nog steeds de oudste katholieke kerk van Miami en werd gebouwd in hetzelfde decennia als de Freedom Tower in 1922. De architectuur en het ontwerp van de kerk is uitzonderlijk, je vindt niet veel kerken in deze ongebruikelijke stijl. Het interieur was verrassend, de plafonds redelijk laag maar de sierglazen ramen fantastisch. Dit was niet te verwachten als je het kerkgebouw aan de buitenkant ziet. 

De naam Gesu is de vertaling van Jezus in het Italiaans. De kerkgemeenschap is zeer actief in de parochie en dit was duidelijk voelbaar bij ons bezoek. Zeker voor ouderen wordt er veel gedaan, iedere dag kunnen gepensioneerden in de refter van de kerk, voor 1 dollar een ontbijt en lunch nuttigen en dit reeds voor 35 jaar..

27 amazing stained glass artworks from Joep Nicolas in the Old Church, Delft

Delft in Holland is a beautiful historic town, the Old Church built in 1246 was the first church of the city. The clock tower is gracious and can been seen from several streets. Certainly a nice view from the road works at the Delft train station where they try to build an underground station like in Antwerp. But let’s go back to the Old Church. This is a very special church. The whole building is a mausoleum, more than 400 people are buried in the walls and the foundations of the church. It is a strange feeling to walk over the graves. First we thought that we should not do this out of respect for the dead, but there is no other possibility, the graves are everywhere. The most amazing artworks in the church are the 27 stained glass windows from Joep Nicolas. Only for these windows I would return to the Old Church in Delft. It is the most beautiful glass artwork collection I have ever seen.

De gemeente Delft is een mooie historische stad, de Oude Kerk werd gebouwd in 1246 en was hun eerste kerk. De kloktoren is sierlijk en kan worden gezien van uit verschillende straten. Dit is zeker een mooi zicht van aan het Centraal station, waar alles opgebroken ligt vanwege de wegenwerken voor de ondergrondse treinsporen, net zoals in Antwerpen. Maar laat ons terug gaan naar de Oude Kerk. Het hele gebouw is een crypte waar meer dan 400 mensen begraven liggen in de fundering en muren. Het is een raar gevoel om over de graven te wandelen. Eerst dachten we dat dit niet mocht uit respect voor de doden, maar de graven zijn overal, je kan het niet vermijden. De meest ongelooflijke kunstwerken, zijn de 27 glasramen ontworpen door Dhr. Joep Nicolas. Voor deze glasramen te bewonderen willen we zeker terug gaan naar de Oude kerk. Het is de mooiste glasramen collectie die we ooit hebben gezien..
