Merry Christmas from the Riga Christmas Market

Being in Latvia, the north of Europe, makes you feel closer to the home of Santa Claus. It is also colder. The Christmas markets are different than we use to see. Maybe it is more traditional. In the middle of the square stands a giant Christmas tree and white barn.

The traders are selling candy, wooden spoons, warm shoes, gloves, woolen hats, cakes, cookies, honey, meat, cheese and syrups. A man in traditional clothing is warming up red wine. Can you imagine that we encountered friends from The Netherlands on this market? Merry Christmas to all.

Terwijl we in Letland waren, het noorden van Europa, voelden we ons dichter bij het huis van de Kerstman. Het is er ook kouder. De kerstmarkten zijn er anders dan bij ons. Misschien meer traditioneel. In het midden van het plein staat een grote kerstboom met witte stal. 

De marktkramers verkopen snoep, houten lepels, warme sloffen, handschoenen, wollen mutsen, taarten, koekjes, honing, vlees, kaas en siroop. Een man in traditionele kledij warmt rode wijn op. Kan je het voorstellen dat wij hier op deze markt bevriende Nederlanders zijn tegen gekomen. Wij wensen iedereen een Prettige Kerst toe.
