The New Church with the "Lange Jan" tower and Abbey of Middelburg

The church tower of 91 metres high is the symbol of Middelburg. You see the emperor's crown on the top of Lange Jan from many place in town. The crown is yellow and decorated with giant white balls which look like pearls. This crown is our favourite monument of the city.

The New Church to which the Lange Jan tower is connected is modest. It a mainly used as a choir and one of the walls is decorated with a bleu/white drawing. The organ is fabulous.

Since 900 years, you find an abbey in Middelburg. Most likely this is one of the biggest abbey complexes we have seen. After the first part of our visit we relax a bit in the inner court garden.

De 91 meter hoge kerktoren "Lange Jan" is het symbool van Middelburg. Op de top zie je de gele keizerlijke kroon versiert met grote witte bollen die parels voorstellen. De toren is zichtbaar van op vele plaatsen in de stad en is ons favoriete monument.

De Nieuwe Kerk tegen dewelke Lange Jan is aangebouwd is zeer eenvoudig. Het is een koorkerk en een van de muren is versierd met een grote gewaagde wit blauwe tekening. Het orgel is gewoon verbluffend. 

Reeds 900 jaar staat er een abdij in Middelburg. Waarschijnlijk is dit de grootste abdij dat we ooit hebben gezien. Na ons bezoek komen we wat tot rust in de heerlijke binnentuin.

General impressions of the green city of Middelburg

Middelburg is a small town located in the south of The Netherlands. The area or province is called Zeeland and is surrounded by water. Also in Middelburg you find many canals.

It is a lively city with lots of shopping opportunities and historical buildings like the city hall, the abbey and the new church. Middelburg has a green heart with beautiful parks and canals. When interested you can even enjoy a canal boat tour.

The pictures below should give you some impressions of this lovely town. We particularly liked the windmill, the manual water pump and the flowers in front of the graffiti tunnel.

Middelburg is een kleine stad gelegen in het zuiden van Nederland. Het gebied of provincie noemt Zeeland en is omringt door de zee. Ook in Middelburg vind je vele kanalen.

Het is een levendige stad met vele winkelgelegenheden en historische gebouwen zoals het stadhuis, de abdij en de Nieuwe Kerk. Middelburg heeft een groen hart met mooie parken en kanalen. Indien gewenst kan je hier ook een boottochtje maken. 

De bijgevoegde foto's geven u enkele indrukken van deze prachtige stad. Onze voorkeur gaat uit naar de Hollandse windmolen, de handmatige waterpomp en de bloemen met graffiti tunnel achtergrond.

Vleeshal Centre for contemporary art in Middelburg

Many of you probably think what is a Vleeshal? It is Dutch for Meat Hall. It is an indoor market place where they use to sell meat. You can see and feel it when entering the hall, the white walls, high ceilings and in general a cold room to keep the meat in good condition.

The building became later the City Hall and is now an exhibition centre for contemporary art. Here artists find a location to show their pieces at low cost. For the public a good opportunity to see free exhibitions but voluntary contributions are always welcome.

The exterior of the building is spectacular with many Gothic elements like towers, sculptures, statues, and the funny red & white window blinds.

Vele niet Nederlands sprekende mensen zullen wel denken wat is een Vleeshal. Wel een binnenmarkt waar men vroeger vlees verkocht. Als je de hal binnen gaat voel je toch deze sfeer vanwege de witte muren, nissen, hoge plafonds en in het algemeen een koude ruimte om het vlees in goede staat te behouden. 

Het gebouw werd later het Stadhuis van Middelburg en is nu een tentoonstellingsruimte voor hedendaagse kunst. Kunstenaars vinden hier een goedkoop platform om hun werken aan het publiek te tonen. Voor bezoekers een mooie gelegenheid om gratis moderne kunst te ontdekken maar vrijwillige donaties zijn steeds welkom. 

De buitenzijde van het gebouw is spectaculair met zijn vele Gotische elementen zoals torentjes, beeldhouwwerken, standbeelden en de leuke rood witte vensterluiken.
