A first impression of the Galapagos, Baltra Airport

After a long journey from Europe to Ecuador, we have a connection flight in Quito. From here we still had to fly a few hours to Baltra which is located in the Pacific Ocean. After landing, we had to walk to the small airport terminal. Next to us another plane takes off. Safety regulations still have to be invented. The rules are however enforced as soon as you enter the terminal, here you have to pass emigration and show your entry license for the Galapagos with payment of environmental fees.

Once outside, there is no town, only the airport bus which brings you to the port where your pre-booked boat picks up passengers. Baltra is a desert which houses an airport terminal. In the port we see our first iguana and pelican. Everyone takes pictures, unbelievable. The locals think we are completely crazy and now we know why. In the coming days we saw thousands of those iguanas.

Na een lange reis van Europa naar Ecuador, nemen we een connectie vlucht in Quito. Van hieruit is het nog enkele uren vliegen naar Baltra gelegen in de Stille Oceaan. Na de landing wandelen we naar de terminal. Naast ons stijgt een ander vliegtuig op. De veiligheid voorschriften staan hier nog in de kinderschoenen. Het wordt allemaal wel heel strikt eens in de luchthaven waar je voorbij de emigratie moet, je toegangslicentie tonen en de extreme milieubelastingen betalen. 

Eens buiten is er geen stad, enkel een luchthaven bus die je naar de strandhaven brengt. Hier worden bezoekers opgehaald door vooraf gereserveerde boten. Baltra is gewoon een woestijn eiland met luchthavengebouw. In de haven zien we onze eerste pelikaan en leguaan. Iedereen neemt foto’s, ongelooflijk. De havenarbeiders denken dat die toeristen volslagen gek zijn en nu weten we waarom. In de daar op volgende dagen zagen we duizenden leguanen.

Modern architecture and design at Kuala Lumpur airport

At the airport you feel KL is a city in full expansion. They build a new terminal, everything is brand new and modern. The distances between terminals are covered via an Aerotrain which rides above ground next to the gates. A good opportunity to see the planes from close by. The country has two major airlines, Malaysian Airlines and AirAsia.

We were astonished to see how big AirAsia is. They fly to almost 100 destinations and the worlds best low cost airline. There slogan is "Now everyone can fly". We flew with them to Phuket.

The airport terminals are well organised, the check-in, customs and boarding are efficient. When you have to wait a while there are lots of shops and restaurants. Just walking around will enrich your view of architecture and design. The only negative about KL airport is that the drive to Kuala Lumpur takes more than one hour.

Op de luchthaven voel je dat Kuala Lumpur een stad is in volle expansie. Men heeft er een nieuwe terminal gebouwd en alles is nieuw en modern. Om de afstand tussen terminals te overbruggen gebruikt men een Aerotrain die ook bovengronds naast de vliegtuigen en gates rijdt. Een goede kans om vliegtuigen van dichtbij te aanschouwen. Het land heeft twee grote luchtvaartmaatschappijen: Malaysian Airlines en AirAsia.

We waren verbaasd hoe groot AirAsia wel is. Ze vliegen bijna op 100 bestemmingen en zijn de beste Low Cost Airline ter wereld. Hun slogan is "Nu kan iedereen vliegen". Wij vlogen met hen naar Phuket. 

De luchthaventerminals zijn goed georganiseerd, de check-in, douane en het instappen zijn zeer efficiënt. Als je toch wat moet wachten zijn er heel wat restaurants en winkels. Hier rondwandelen zal je appreciatie voor architectuur en design verruimen. Het enige negatieve punt dat we over KL luchthaven kunnen melden is de afstand naar de hoofdstad. Het is meer als één uur rijden.
