The easiest and the cheapest way to spot alligators in the Everglades is on foot. The walking trails at the Royal Palm are just fantastic, our favourite is the Anhinga Trail. We visited the Everglades at the end of the rain season and the water level was high. In these circumstances you see less alligators but you should always see them at the Royal Palm. We once were there in the dry season and we probably saw a hunderd. We met people there who spent four days on the water in the Everglades and did not see an alligator. They were very surprised they could spot them at the Royal Palm.
It is an excellent place to spot wildlife, next to the alligators, we saw turtles, the great white heron, the osprey, and several other birds we could not identify. The water plants are so bright green covered by a layer of crystal clear water. The trails take you alongside amazing trees and elevated platforms from which you can safely look down into the water. Sometimes you see alligators a few metres away from you, don't feed them, it is forbidden.
How to reach the Royal Palm by car? The Everglades National Park is very big so you need to know which entrance to take. On the south east of Florida, you drive to Homestead. There you will already see traffic signs indicating the direction to the Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center. From there it is only 4 miles to the Royal Palm, you can not miss it, there is only one road. Enjoy your alligator spotting now that it is still possible because the Everglades are invaded by giant snakes that threaten the alligator population.
De meest eenvoudige en goedkoopste manier om alligators te zien in de Everglades is te voet. De wandelpaden aan het Royal Palm gebied zijn fantastisch en de Anhinga Trail is onze favoriete wandeling. Deze keer bezochten we het Everglades National Park op het einde van het regenseizoen. Het water stond hoog en dan is het moeilijker alligators te zien maar aan de Royal Palm zijn er altijd. Tijdens het droge seizoen hebben we er hier wel honderd gezien. Bij ons bezoek kwamen we mensen tegen die vier dagen op het water in de Everglades hebben doorgebracht zonder alligators te zien. Ze waren verbaast dat ze hier gewoon van op de wandelpaden gespot konden worden.
Dit is ook een uitstekende plaats om andere dieren in het wild te aanschouwen. Naast alligators, hebben we ook schildpadden, grote witte reigers en vele andere vogels gezien. De waterplanten die op of net onder het kristal heldere water groeien zijn spectaculair. Langs het wandelpad zie je prachtige bomen en de verhoogde platformen laten je toe over het moeras te lopen. Op een veilige manier kan je naar beneden kijken waar alligators liggen te rusten of zwemmen. Soms zie je zelfs een alligator op enkele meters afstand, het is ten strengste verboden ze te voeden.
Hoe kan je de Royal Palm per auto bereiken? Het Everglades National Park is zo groot dat je de juiste ingang moet kiezen. In het zuid oosten van Florida rijd je naar de stad Homestead. Daar zie richtingaanwijzers naar het Ernest F. Coe Visitor Center. Van hieruit is het nog 6 km rijden naar de Royal Palm, er is maar een weg, je kan dus niet verkeerd rijden. Geniet van je alligator wandeling nu het nog mogelijk is want het zeer snel groeiende aantal reuzenslangen in de Everglades zijn een grote bedreiging voor de alligator populatie..
