We liked the Carenage or inner harbour of the capital. This is the centre of economical activities. Large container vessels drop and load their cargo but also small fisher boats colour the horseshoe shaped inner port. One little boat has the description “God is love 2”, it shows how religious the local population is. We will come back on this when we write about the churches in St. George.
On our way back to the cruise ship we take a picture of the outer port with the big Celebrity Eclipse next to the Silversea ship. It gives a good impression of the different sizes of the ships. We cruise with the Celebrity Eclipse.
Grenada staat bekend als het “Kruideneiland” en heeft de grootste variatie aan kruiden ter wereld rekening houdende met de kleine oppervlakte van het eiland. Op onze wandeling door de hoofdstad St. George, trachten mensen ons kruiden te verkopen. Spijtig genoeg is het te moeilijk deze mee te nemen naar Europa. Om de lokale middenstand wat te steunen drinken we iets in één van de bars. Het eiland heeft nog steeds last van de gevolgen van orkaan Ivan die vernieling aanrichtte in 2004. Sommige huizen en gebouwen liggen nog in puin.
We vonden de Carenage of de binnenhaven van de hoofdstad wel leuk. Deze is het hart van de economische activiteit. Grote containerschepen laden en lossen hun vracht maar ook kleine vissersbootjes kleuren de hoefijzervormige binnenhaven. Een klein bootje met het opschrift “God is liefde 2” toont aan hoe gelovig mensen zijn. We komen hier op terug als we over de kerken van St. George’s schrijven.
Op weg terug naar het cruise schip nemen we een foto van de grote Celebrity Eclipse naast Silversea. Het laat een goede indruk na van hoe verschillend de capaciteit van beide schepen is. Wij reizen met de Celebrity Eclipse..
