Fresh fish and fruit on Pike's Place Market, Seattle

It is strange to say this but Pike's Place Market is advertised as one of the top attractions of Seattle and we believe it is true. Here in this street they opened the first Starbucks Coffee.

The fruit looked incredible and we tried orange raspberries, cherries and very juicy "Oh My God Peaches". We were surprised that fruit can be that tasty.

On the market they also sell fresh fish. Some of the merchants are putting on a real show for the tourists and when they don't sell quick enough, they start shouting, hey this is a real fresh market, not only an attraction. We found a fish store with a restaurant right next to it. Guests were queuing from outside the restaurant to get a table. Needless to say that we tried it out and had some of the King Crab, a local top product.

Het is raar, maar Pike's Place Market wordt geadverteerd als één van de top bezienswaardigheden van Seattle en we denken dat het nog waar is ook. Hier in deze straat openden ze de eerste Starbucks koffie.

Het fruit zag er ongelooflijk uit en we probeerden oranje frambozen, kersen en zeer sappige "Oh My God" perziken. We waren verbaast dat fruit zo lekker kon zijn. 

Op de markt verkoopt men ook verse vis en schaaldieren. Sommige marktkramers zetten op een grote show voor de toeristen en als ze niet snel genoeg verkopen, roepen ze, hei dit is een echte vismarkt, niet enkel een bezienswaardigheid. We vonden een vishandelaar met een visrestaurant ernaast. Gasten stonden tot buiten te wachten voor een tafeltje. Wij besloten hier ook aan tafel te schuiven en genoten van een poot King Krab, een lokaal top product.

Mercado Central de Atarazanas, the fresh market of Malaga

On the first picture you see the white entrance of the market and it is clear that it contains elements of Islam architecture. This was an Arabic ship repair building in the 14th century and the entrance is still the original one. The other parts of the building were destroyed and in the 19th century they covered the fresh market which now contains a fabulous stained glass art work. The size of this glass art work is unbelievable.

The market itself provides customers the best fresh product you can imagine. If we would live here, we would certainly buy many ingredients on the Mercado Central. We have never so many different types of oysters and shells, the fish and shrimps really appealed to us. The coloured fruit and vegetables provided nice photo opportunities.

Spain is known for its meat and especially it’s cured Iberian Ham. It was possible to taste this on one of the tapas bars. We just had breakfast so we couldn't eat again and the salami looked so good. What we never saw on other markets were the bodies of partridge including the feathers and trotters.

Op de eerste foto zie je de inkom van de markt en het wordt onmiddellijk duidelijk dat we hier met Islam architectuur te maken hebben. Dit was een Moorse scheepswerf in de 14de eeuw en dit is de originele ingang. Het gebouw werd echter vernietigd en in de 19de heeft men de markt overdekt. De zijkant die het dak ondersteund bestaat uit een prachtig gekleurd sierglas. De omvang van dit brandglas is ongelooflijk.

De marktkramers verkopen de beste producten, het is een paradijs voor koks. Als wij in Malaga zouden wonen kwamen we hier onze inkopen op de Mercado Central doen. We hebben nog nooit zoveel verschillende oesters en schelpjes gezien, de vis en garnalen zagen er ook fantastisch uit. Het kleurrijke fruit en groenten gaf ons mooie fotomomenten. 

Spanje is beroemd omwille van zijn vlees en in het bijzonder de Iberische Ham. Het was mogelijk deze te proeven aan de tapas bars maar we hadden net ontbeten. Heel spijtig want de salami zag er ook heel lekker uit. We hadden nog nooit een markt gezien waar men niet gepluimde patrijzen en varkenspoten verkoopt.

Exploring nature at the old sugar mill in St. Kitts

St. Kitts has been growing sugar canes for more than 6 centuries. All over the island you could find sugar mills where canes were transformed in real consumable sugar products. At this mill there was even a viaduct to transport water. The buildings are deserted and partially destroyed, the grounds are used for other purposes now. Tourists visit the mill before trying out a zip line of an adventure park a bit further.

When we arrived, kids in traditional clothing were dancing. Some kind of welcome for us and we gave a little contribution. The trees and river around the mill are different than in our home country. Our driver gave a demonstration to show how strong these vines really are. On many branches you could see fruit.

St. Kitts verbouwt reeds suikerstokken sinds de 15de eeuw. Op vele plaatsen op het eiland vond je suikermolens en fabrieken, waar stokken werden verwerkt in eetbare suikerproducten. Bij deze suikermolen staat er zelfs een viaduct voor het transport van water. De gebouwen staan er verlaten bij en zijn gedeeltelijk vervallen. Het terrein wordt nu voor andere doeleinden gebruikt. Toeristen bezoeken de oude fabriek om daarna in het achter gelegen avonturenpark te gaan ziplinen. 

Toen we aankwamen, verwelkomden enkele dansende kinderen ons in traditionele kledij. Een moment voor een kleine bijdrage van onze zijde. De bomen en rivier rond de fabriek zijn totaal anders dan in eigen land. Onze chauffeur toonde demonstratief hoe sterk de lianen wel zijn. Aan vele takken zag je het tropisch fruit hangen..
