Ultimate luxury at the Mandarin Oriental Hotel, Kuala Lumpur

The five star Mandarin Oriental Hotel chain is one of the top hotel brands in the world. Under normal circumstances in Europe, we could never afford to stay in such a hotel. In South East Asia however, the rates of luxury hotels are much lower, sometimes up to the price of an average hotel in a European capital. A great opportunity to get spoiled.

We enjoyed the restaurant and Spa area. There was even a golf simulator with golf instructor. Our room was excellent and completely sound isolated. When you sleep in this bed, you immediately feel the quality of the matrass, feather blankets and pillows. The temperature of the room is exactly as you want it and you don't feel or hear the air-conditioning. The pictures below give you an impression of the hotel. The next time we are in Kuala Lumpur we will certainly stay here again.

De vijf sterren hotelketen Mandarin Oriental is één van de top hotel merken ter wereld. Onder normale omstandigheden in Europa, zouden we ons nooit kunnen veroorloven in zo'n hotel te overnachten. In Zuidoost Azië daarentegen zijn de prijzen van luxe hotels veel lager, soms bijna gelijkaardig als de prijs per nacht voor een gemiddeld hotel in een Europese hoofdstad. Een uitstekende kans om eens verwent te worden. 

We genoten van het restaurant en de Spa. Er was zelfs een golfsimulator met een echt golfinstructeur. Onze kamer was uitstekend en volledig geïsoleerd tegen geluid van buitenaf. Als je in dit bed slaapt, voel je onmiddellijk de kwaliteit van de matras, de donsdekens en hoofdkussens. De temperatuur in de kamer is exact op je wensen afgesteld en je voelt of hoort de airconditioning niet. De foto's hieronder geven een impressie van het hotel. De volgende keer in Kuala Lumpur gaan we zeker hier terug logeren.

Trying out the famous Mo Grill Restaurant, Kuala Lumpur

The Mo Grill is one of the most prestigious restaurants of KL and it is located in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. The interior is fantastic as also the service. With such a hotel we are not surprised it is praised a lot. However, we don't share the same opinion.

The restaurant is expensive and it is advertised as one of the top places competing with the best in the world. The Chef Benjamin Halat has worked in several one star and two star Michelin restaurants in Europe. In this restaurant they try to give customers the impression this cuisine is on the same level. In our opinion it doesn't come close. We can only recommend the Chef to visit some of the Michelin star restaurants in France and Belgium and judge for himself.

We selected the Chef's Tasting Menu containing oxtail, lobster bisque, langoustines, veal, cheese and a dessert. The oxtail and the langoustine were very good but not on the expected level.

De Mo Grill is één van de meest prestigieuze restaurants van KL en wordt uitgebaat in het Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Het interieur is fantastisch en de dienstverlening heel goed. In combinatie met zo'n hotel zijn we niet verbaast dat het zo veel lof krijgt. Wij zijn echter van een totaal andere mening.

Het restaurant is prijzig en wordt geadverteerd als één van de top keukens in vergelijking met Europese Michelin restaurants. De Chef Benjamin Halat werkte in verschillende 1 en 2 sterren restaurants in Europa. Hier probeert men de klanten de indruk te geven dat er op hetzelfde niveau wordt gekookt. Naar onze mening komen ze nog niet in de buurt. We kunnen enkel de Chef aanbevelen enkele Michelin restaurants in Frankrijk en België te bezoeken en zelf te oordelen en te leren. 

We kozen voor het Degustatie Menu met ossenstaart, kreeftenbisque, langoustine, kalfsvlees, kaas en dessert. De ossenstaart en langoustine waren zeer goed maar niet op het verwachte niveau.

Mosaic is one of the best buffet restaurants in the world, Kuala Lumpur

Our title is clearly a daring statement but we stand behind it. After travelling through more than 50 countries, we have never eaten in a buffet restaurant which reaches the level of Mosaic. Nevertheless we tried many five star hotels and top cruise lines, but they did not reach this level. It starts with the interior of this fantastic restaurant in the Mandarin Oriental Hotel. Top quality design, outstanding service, overall professionalism, very good food quality and above all excellent price quality.

On the pictures you see some of the dishes: mushrooms, curries, pasta with fresh ingredients, tagines, wok selections, crab, oysters, shrimps, sushi, sashimi, salmon, sate, Turkish bread, patisserie, chocolate and cakes. There is a lot more and the buffet changes depending on the time of the day. Since we were a long time in Kuala Lumpur we lunched here several times but also tried the dinner and breakfast buffet. When you stay in the Mandarin Oriental, you should certainly not skip breakfast. Reservations are always necessary.

Onze titel is zeker een gedurfde uitspraak maar we staan hier achter. Na het reizen door meer als 50 landen, hebben we nog nooit in een buffet restaurant bezocht die het niveau van Mosiac haalt. Niet tegenstaande dat we toch in vele vijf sterren hotels en top cruise rederijen hebben overnacht konden geen van deze dit niveau behalen. Het start bij het interieur van dit fantastische restaurant in de Mandarin Oriental van Kuala Lumpur. Top inrichting, uitstekende dienstverlening, professioneel, zeer goede kwaliteit van de gerechten en boven alles uitstekende prijs kwaliteit verhouding. 

Op de foto’s zie je enkele gerechten: paddenstoelen, curries, pasta met verse zelfgekozen ingrediënten, tajine, wok variëteiten, krab, oesters, garnalen, sushi, sashimi, zalm, saté, Turks brood, patisserie, chocolade en taartjes. Er is nog veel meer en de buffetten variëren afhankelijk van het moment van de dag. Daar we lange tijd in Kuala Lumpur verbleven, aten we hier verschillende keren ’s middags, maar ook eens ’s avonds en voor het ontbijt. Als je in de Mandarin Oriental verblijft, mag je nooit het ontbijt overslaan. Reservaties zijn noodzakelijk.
