In the park of Hofburg Palace, stands a monument in the memory of Mozart. He is surrounded by angels carrying musical instruments. In the middle lies his violin. The enormous building in the background is the residence of the President of Austria. It however needs to be cleaned up a bit.

In het park van Hofburg Palace staat een monument ter nagedachtenis van Mozart. Hij is omringd door muziekinstrument dragende engelen. In het midden ligt zijn viool. Het enorme gebouw op de achtergrond is de residentie van de Oostenrijkse president. Het moet echter wel wat schoongemaakt worden.

Salzburg a major Austrian city where culture and nature melt together

When we think of visiting Austria, most of us think about skiing and the Alps. There are however two major cities in the country which have incredible historical treasures. This is the capital Vienna and the second most important city of Austria, namely Salzburg. It is a bit strange because the town only has a population of about 150.000 inhabitants. Next to the fact that Salzburg is the birthplace of Mozart and the “Sound of Music”, it blends in with nature.

Right through the city flows the Salzach river who brings cold and fresh water down from the Alps. A small metal bridge in remembrance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart helps pedestrians to cross the river. It’s called Mozartsteg and was built in 1903.

In the city centre of Salzburg you find small parks, flower beds, houses decorated with flowers, people investing a lot of time in gardening. The city is in fact located in the hills and just a few kilometres further they rise into the alps. Do you remember the flower fields and meadows where Julie Andrews sang “The Hills are alive”. Well, that’s here in this region where the famous movie “The Sound of Music” of the family Von Trapp was recorded. We hope you enjoy our nature pictures of Salzburg. If it is not possible for you to visit the city, maybe you should consider looking at the “Sound of Music” again on DVD.

Als we een reis naar Oostenrijk overwegen, dan denken we meestal aan skiën, de Alpen of bergwandelingen. Er zijn echter twee grote steden in het land die een ware verzameling van historische schatten zijn. Dit is Wenen, de hoofdstad van Oostenrijk en de tweede belangrijkste stad van het land Salzburg. Het is wel verbazend dat Salzburg 150.000 inwoners telt en toch zo belangrijk is. Naast het feit dat het de geboorteplaats is van Mozart en de “Sound of Music” smelt de stad gewoon samen met de natuur. 

Door het midden van de stad stroomt de Salzach Rivier die het heldere en koude water van de Alpen meevoert. Een kleine metalen brug ter herdenking van Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart helpt voetgangers naar de overzijde. Dit is de Mozartsteg en ze werd gebouwd in 1903. 

In het stadscentrum van Salzburg vind je vele kleine parken, bloemenperken, huisjes met groen en bloemen gedecoreerd en mensen investeren tijd in de aanleg van hun tuin. De stad ligt in feite in de heuvels die op enkele kilometers afstand rijzen tot de Alpen. Herinner je nog de bloemenvelden en weiden waar Julie Andrews zong, “The Hills are alive”. Wel, het is hier dat de wereldberoemde film “The Sound of Music” met de Von Trapp familie werd opgenomen. We hopen dat je van onze Salzburg natuurfoto’s kan genieten. Als het niet mogelijk voor je is Salzburg te bezoeken kan je het overwegen de “Sound of Music” nog eens op DVD te bekijken..

Salzburg, the city of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

We start our Mozart discovery walk in Salzburg at the Mozartplatz. The sun is shining, so it is time for a picture just in front of his statue. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is one of the most famous composers in the world and lived from 1756 until 1791. He died at the age of 35, the cause of death is not really known. At Getreidegasse nr. 9 he was born. The house is in a good state and the upper floors are a museum. You feel Salzburg is the city of Mozart, almost every shop sells Mozart related products. The most famous must be the Mozartkugeln from the brand Mirabell. People who like chocolate and marzipan have to try it.

We beginnen onze Mozart ontdekkingswandeling in Salzburg aan de Mozartplatz. Ze zon schijnt en het is tijd voor een foto aan het standbeeld van Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Hij is één van de beroemdste componisten ter wereld en leefde van 1756 tot 1791. Op 35 jarige leeftijd stierf hij aan een onbekende ziekte. In het huis op Getreidegasse 9 werd hij geboren. Het huis is in goede staat en de bovenste verdiepingen zijn ingericht als museum. Je voelt dat Salzburg de stad van Mozart is, bijna elke winkel verkoopt Mozart gerelateerde producten. De meest beroemde hiervan zijn de Mozartkugeln van het merk Mirabell. Als je van chocolade en marsepein houdt, zou ik er zeker eens kopen..

The baroque style Saint Nicolas church in Malá Strana, Prague

For me this is a special article because it is the 100th church on this blog. The Saint Nicolas church is Prague is extraordinary with its baroque interior. The church was built in 1755 and has a 75m high dome. The overload of heavy details which is a typical baroque style is certainly appealing to me. I always find this impressive. The ceilings are covered with paintings and the church contains the largest ceiling fresco of Europe. Everywhere you see gold and marble statues, pieces of art, altars, and an amazing organ. In a normal church you would expect a good organ player and occasionally a concert player. Here in this church Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart played the organ, wouldn’t you like to attend. Unfortunately this is no longer possible but we still can enjoy the fantastic interior.

Voor mij is dit een bijzonder artikel daar het mijn 100ste kerk publicatie is op deze blog. De Sint Nicolas kerk in Praag is buitengewoon omwille van zijn barok interieur. De kerk werd gebouwd in 1755 en heeft een koepel van 75m hoogte. Het veelvoud aan zware decoraties wat typisch is in deze stijl, is zeer aantrekkelijk voor mij. Ik ben altijd onder de indruk van barok. De plafonds zijn bedekt met muurschilderingen en de kerk bezit het grootste plafond fresco van Europa. Overal zie je gouden en marmeren beelden, kunstwerken, altaren, en een ongelooflijk mooi orgel. In een normale kerk verwacht je een goede orgel speler of af en toe een concertspeler. Hier in deze kerk speelde Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart op het orgel, zou je dat niet graag meemaken. Spijtig genoeg is dit niet meer mogelijk maar we kunnen nog steeds genieten van het interieur..

Papageno and the Lion of Flanders, Stadsschouwburg of Brugge

The Stadsschouwburg in Brugge is a teather from 1869. It is used for dance performances, concerts, operas, comedies and all kind of open stage performances. It is a fascinating building with giant decorated columns. On the top floor you see a lion wearing a golden crown. According to us this represents the Lion of Flanders, the fury on the battlefield of the Golden Spurs. A victory of Flanders against the French, which took place on 11 July 1302. This is why July 11, is still the yearly Anniversary of Flanders. Next to the shield you see a bear, the symbol of Brugge. The statue in front of the Stadsschouwburg was also interesting it represents Papageno, the bird catcher of the Opera of The Magic Flute composed by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. It is amazing how much information just a few statues and decorations hold.

De Stadsschouwburg in Brugge is een operahuis van 1869. Het wordt gebruikt voor dansvoorstellingen, concerten, opera’s, toneel, en allerlei soorten open podium voorstellingen. Het is een fascinerend gebouw met enorme versierde zuilen. Op het bovenste verdiep zie je een leeuw die een gouden kroon draagt. Volgens ons moet dit de Leeuw Van Vlaanderen voorstellen, de razernij op het front van de Guldensporenslag. Op 11 juli overwonnen de Vlamingen de Fransen in deze veldslag. 11 juli is nog steeds de Vlaamse feestdag. Naast het schild zie je ook een beer, het symbool van Brugge. Het standbeeld voor de Stadsschouwburg was ook interessant, het stelt Papageno voor, de vogelvanger uit de opera de Toverfluit, gecomponeerd door Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Het is verbazingwekkend hoeveel informatie er verscholen is in een paar beelden en symbolen..
