Basilica Notre-Dame de la Garde, Marseille

This church fortress was constructed in the late 19th century in Romano-byzantine architecture. The church tower holds a golden statue of Our Lady with child, it weighs 9 tons. The entrance of the church is protected by a defense bridge. It is the first time we encounter such a feature in front of a church.

The interior of the church is colorful with beautiful ceilings and domes. There was an exposition of modern water paintings. They made a strong impressions.

Dit kerkfort werd gebouwd in de laat 19de eeuw in een Romano Byzantijnse architectuur. Op de kerktoren staat een gouden beeld van Maria met kind, het weegt 9 ton. De ingang van de kerk wordt beschermd door een ophaalbrug. Het is de eerste keer dat we dit zien bij een kerk. 

Het interieur is kleurrijk met prachtige plafonds en koepels. Er was een tentoonstelling van moderne waterverf schilderijen. Ze lieten een diepe indruk na.

Views from Notre-Dame de la Garde, Marseille

The views from this 150m high hill in Marseille are spectacular. As a tourist you have to visit Nortre-Dame de la Garde. You can easily reach the hill top by tourist train or taxi. We however enjoy a walk so we did it on foot from the Vieux Port. Don't under estimate this, it took longer than expected and some streets were rather steep.

Once on the top, you get rewarded. Below you see the city of Marseille and the Vieux Port. It is a collection of nice buildings ranging from the Ferris Wheel, a castle, other churches, the football stadium, modern high rise buildings and the main port. Looking closer, we saw even a few ferries and cruise ships in port.

Het zicht van op de 150m hoge heuvel in Marseille is spectaculair. Als toerist mag je dit niet missen, de Notre-Dame de la Garde is zeker een bezoek waard. Je kan deze gemakkelijk bereiken met een toeristentreintje of taxi. Wij houden wel van wandelen dus gingen we er te voet heen van uit de Vieux Port. De afstand was groter dan verwacht en straten soms heel steil. 

Eens boven aangekomen wordt je beloond. Onder je, zie je de grote stad Marseille en de Oude Haven. Het is een verzameling mooie constructies met een reuzenrad, kasteel, andere kerken, een voetbalstadium, moderne torengebouwen en de haven. We zagen zelfs enkele ferry's en cruise schepen aangemeerd liggen.
