How Russian Tsars lived in the Winter Palace, Hermitage St. Petersburg

We understood that the Hermitage was a museum like the Louvre in Paris or the Metropolitan in New York City, a nice historical building open to the public where they display art. This is true but it is also a lot more than that. It was the Winter Palace of the Russian emperors and Catherina the Great.

On the first picture you see a large crowd making its way to the Jordan Staircase, a hall with large columns completely decorated in Rococo style. During the morning, the Hermitage was only open for guided tours. Individual tourists are only allowed in the afternoon. The waiting lines are long.

From the Imperial Staircase, we make our way to one of the smaller Throne Rooms and I took a picture of one of the many emperors. The next big hall is the Armorial Hall, it is the biggest hall in the palace and was used for big events. The large room with the red throne is the main throne hall or the St. George’s Hall. A little bit further in one of the many palace rooms, I meet a Belgian Tsarina who is wiling to pose for a picture. This was our contribution of the Winter Palace.

We dachten dat het Hermitage een museum was zoals het Louvre in Parijs of de Metropolitan in New York, een mooi historisch gebouw open voor het publiek en waar kunst wordt tentoongesteld. Dat is vanzelfsprekend maar het is meer dan een gewoon museum. Het was het Winterpaleis en residentie van de Tsaren en Chatherina de Grote. 

Op de eerste foto zie je een grote menigte op weg naar de Jordan trappenhal, een hal met grote zuilen en versiert in Rococo stijl. In de voormiddag is het Hermitage enkel open voor groepen, individuele toeristen kunnen pas in de namiddag binnen. Hou rekening met lange wachtrijen. 

 Van de keizerlijke trappenhal gaan we naar een kleinere troonzaal en ik nam een foto van een schilderij van één van de vele Tsaren. De volgende zaal is de Armorial Hall, deze werd gebruikt voor grote evenement en feest en is de grootste zaal van het paleis. De enorme kamer met de rode troon is de belangrijkste troonzaal of de St. George Hall. Een beetje verder in een zwaar gedecoreerd stukje van het paleis, is een bereidwillige Belgische Tsarina bereid te poseren voor een foto. Dit was onze bijdrage voor het Winter Paleis..

Views of the Hermitage Museum from across the Neva River, St. Petersburg

When we think about a museum in St. Petersburg, everyone immediately says the Hermitage. It is one of the most famous and biggest museums in the world. This was not always the case, from 1762 it was the palace and residence of Catherine the Great. The Russian Tsarina loved art and had an enormous collection inside her palace. The name hermitage means private place, a palace that she used for her art collection and where she alone could enjoy it. The Hermitage is located at the Palace Square, the corner of Nevsky Prospekt and the Palace Embankment.

The exterior of the building looks similar as Catherine’s Palace in Pushkin with white and green facades. The architect also worked with columns and lion heads like in the Summer Palace. The best overview pictures of the Hermitage or Winter Palace can be taken from across the Neva River. There you really see how long the buildings are. The Palace embankment like all other roads in St. Petersburg is always filled with traffic. Taking a picture without cars from this side is impossible. We would recommend travelling with the metro in St. Petersburg, it is more efficient. In our next article we will take you inside to see the Winter Palace and living areas of the Russian emperors.

Als we over een museum praten in St. Petersburg, denkt iedereen onmiddellijk aan het Hermitage. Het is één van de meest beroemde en grootste musea ter wereld. Dit was niet altijd zo, in 1762 werd het gebouwd als paleis en residentie van Catherina de Grote. De Russische Tsarina hield van kunst en verzamelde een enorme collectie voor haar paleis. De naam Hermitage betekend, privé plaats, een plaats waar zij alleen kon genieten van haar verzameling. Het Hermitage is gelegen aan Palace Square, de hoek van Nevsky Prospekt en de Palace Embankment. 

De buitenkant van het paleis is te vergelijken met Catherine’s Palace in Pushkin met witte en groene voorgevels. De architect gebruikte ook zuilen en leeuwenkoppen zoals in het Zomerpaleis. De beste overzichtsfoto's van het Hermitage of Winterpaleis kunnen worden genomen aan de overkant van de Neva Rivier. Daar kan je pas echt zien hoe lang en groot het paleis wel is. Er staat altijd verkeer op de Palace Embankment, een foto nemen zonder auto’s is gewoon onmogelijk. Het verkeer is zo druk in St. Petersburg dat we aanraden de metro te nemen, dat is veel efficiënter.
