Staying at the Delano Art Deco hotel, South Beach Miami

There are not many hotels that make such an impression on me as the Delano. This is one of our top hotel experiences. What did we like the most: the incredible heated swimming pool. Its garden and swimming pool had everything: nice music, drinks, sun beds, cabana's and above all the pool was large and hot. We stayed three nights and used the pool twice a day.

The rooms were completely decorated in white. At first a surprise but very nice. It probably blends in perfectly with the Art Deco style of this famous hotel. We think the Delano is one of the best resorts on South Beach but it is expensive. Be careful when booking this hotel, most sites advertise it at rates excluding breakfast and resort fee.

Er zijn niet veel hotels die zo'n indruk op mij gemaakt hebben als het Delano. Het is één van onze top hotel ervaringen. Wat vonden we het leukst: het ongelooflijke verwarmde zwembad. De tuin met zwembad heeft gewoon alles: goede muziek, drankjes, zonnebedden, cabana's, en boven alles, het zwembad is groot en heel warm. We bleven er drie nachten en zwommen verschillende keren iedere dag. 

De kamers zijn volledig in het wit ingericht. Een verrassing maar wel heel mooi. Het past waarschijnlijk heel goed bij de Art Deco stijl van het beroemde hotel. We denken dat het Delano één van de beste resorts is op South Beach, maar duur. Opgelet als je het hotel boekt, de meeste sites adverteren prijzen zonder ontbijt en resort fee.

General Impressions of Miami Beach and cocktails

This time we flew to Miami with the Airbus A-380 from Air France. The company has a good reputation but in our opinion this is old glory. We were absolutely not pleased with the service and comfort in economy class.

Miami Beach has great walking promenades, shopping streets, Art Deco architecture and beaches. It is a pleasure to walk around and feel the fantastic ambiance. This comes however with a price, cocktails can be extremely expensive (always ask for the price) and don’t think too much. Go with the flow and have fun.

Deze keer vlogen we met de Airbus A-380 van Air France naar Miami. De luchtvaartmaatschappij heeft een goede reputatie maar naar onze mening is dit oude glorie. We waren absoluut niet tevreden met de dienstverlening en het comfort in de economie klasse. 

Miami Beach heeft ongelooflijke wandelpromenades, winkelstraten, Art Deco architectuur en stranden. Het is een plezier hier rond te wandelen en de fantastische atmosfeer op te snuiven. Dit gaat echter gepaard met een hoge prijs, cocktails kunnen heel duur zijn (vraag altijd eerst de prijs) en denk niet te veel na. Ga uit je bol en maak plezier.

Art Deco breakfast at Jerry’s Famous Deli, Miami Beach

In the Miami Beach Art Deco district, you find Jerry’s Famous Deli on 1450 Collins Avenue. The exterior of the restaurant founded in 1978, indicates it is Art Deco style but inside, it becomes better with flashy columns, inverted glass domes and comfortable booths to sit in and enjoy your breakfast, lunch or dinner.

It is a good place for breakfast and they have a large menu card. Kristel is showing the menu to us, it contains around 600 different dishes. Deli is an abbreviation for delicatessen, is a type of fast food restaurant but everything is prepared at the spot. Something we could not imagine in Europe but the Deli is open 24 hours a day. We ordered some American tosti’s or Croque Monsieur’s. As you can see they contain more meat than we are used to.

In het Miami Beach Art Deco district, op 1450 Collins Avenue vind je Jerry’s Famous Deli. Het restaurant werd opgericht in 1978 en de buitengevel toont direct aan dat het in de Art Deco stijl is gebouwd. Binnen wordt het nog duidelijker met de spiegelzuilen, omgekeerde glazen koepels en comfortabele zetels om van je ontbijt, lunch of avondeten te genieten. 

Het is een uitstekende plaats voor ontbijt en bieden een grote keuze van ongeveer 600 gerechten op het menu aan. Kristel toont je de kaart. Deli is een afkorting van het woord delicatessen, hier in Miami is het een restaurant waar alles ter plaatse wordt klaargemaakt. Iets dat in Europa niet mogelijk is, maar dit restaurant is 24 uur per dag open. We bestelden enkele Amerikaanse Tosti’s of Croque Monsieurs. Zoals je kan zien ligt er veel meer vlees tussen dan wij gewoon zijn..

Cubism and Art Deco buildings in South Beach, Miami

Most of the Art Deco houses in Miami Beach can be found on Ocean Drive and Collins Avenue but they are spread over the city centre. This popular art stream which boomed between 1920 and 1940 had not only an influence on architecture but also interiors and clothing. For us this stream is hard to understand, the main element we see in it is cubism and we like the colourful painted motifs. It seems however a style that needs a lot of façade maintenance. Hope you like the pictures, we will try to provide you some night shot in one of the next articles.

De meeste Art Deco huizen in Miami Beach kunnen worden terug gevonden op Ocean Drive en Collins Avenue maar ze liggen ook verspreid in het stadscentrum. Deze populaire kunststroom die zijn top kende tussen 1920 en 1940 beïnvloedde niet enkel de architectuur maar ook interieur ontwerpen en kleding. Voor ons is deze stroming moeilijk te begrijpen en zien we enkel het kubisme en de kleurvol geschilderde motieven. De Art Deco gevels blijken wel veel onderhoud nodig te hebben.
