Reaching Paradise Point via the St. Thomas skyride

At the end of our day in Charlotte Amalie we bought a ticket to paradise. Let’s keep it on a ticket to Paradise Point, a hill of about 700 feet high which has great views on the port and bay. We got there via the skyride. Together with my lovely wife in a private gondola going to paradise must score very high on my list of romantic escapades.

Unfortunately, from the moment we arrive at the top, it started raining. No clear sky but it still has something special with the fog and rain. The small islands in front of the bay look mysterious with the clouds and the sun light breaking through. The cruise ships are waiting for the passengers to return but we first take a picture at one of the colourful comic mural.

Tegen het einde van de dag in Charlotte Amalie kochten we een kaartje naar het paradijs. Of laat het ons houden op, naar Paradise Point, een heuvel van ongeveer 230m hoog met spectaculaire vergezichten over de baai en haven. Om er te geraken namen we de skyride. Samen met mijn lief vrouwtje nam ik een privé gondel naar het paradijs, dit moet toch zeer hoog scoren op mijn lijst van romantische uitspattingen. 

Spijtig genoeg begon het net te regenen toen we de top bereikten. Geen blauwe open lucht foto’s maar het was toch uniek met de mist en de regen. De kleine eilandjes voor de baai zien er mysterieus uit met het zonlicht dat het wolkendek doorboort. De cruiseschepen wachten op hun passagiers maar voor we terug gaan nemen we nog een foto bij een kleurvolle muurschildering..

Lutheran church on Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas

Maybe it is because we are on a tropical island but this small and simple church has provided us a few special pictures. Most of our church articles show us great pieces of art, expensive interiors, here on the island of St. Thomas, it has given us a warm feeling. The sun was shining, it was more than 30 degrees Celsius and the church building itself together with the palm trees and flowers were enchanting. Against the wall there stood a small red manual water pump with wild grass in front of it. Let’s go back to the essence and importance of water in a tropical climate.

The interior of the church was simple and we saw some familiar but unusual elements. It contained a miniature ship like in many Northern European churches to protect to people at sea and also white boxed seats for visitors. It reminded us of an old church we saw in Boston. Although many churches have similar features, each one stays unique. This is something we will certainly show you on our Caribbean discovery tour.

Misschien is het omdat we op een tropisch eiland zijn, maar deze kleine eenvoudige kerk heeft ons enkele hele mooie foto’s opgeleverd. Onze meeste kerkartikelen tonen rijkdom, bijzondere kunstwerken, dure inrichting, maar hier op St. Thomas gaf deze kerk ons een warm gevoel. De zon scheen op volle kracht, het was meer als 30 graden Celsius en het kerkgebouw samen met de bloemen en palmbomen was betoverend. Tegen één van de muren stond een kleine rode manuele waterpomp met op de voorgrond wat wild korengras. Laat ons terug gaan naar de essentie en belangrijkheid van water in een tropisch klimaat. 

Het interieur van de kerk was eenvoudig en we zagen enkele voor ons gekende maar toch uitzonderlijke elementen. Er stond een miniatuur schip ter bescherming van de zeelieden zoals in vele Noord Europese kerken en de gelovigen zitten in ingesloten witte boxen. Dit deed ons terug denken aan een oude kerk in Boston. Alhoewel vele kerken gelijkaardige elementen bevatten blijft elkeen uniek. Dit is iets dat we u zeker zullen aantonen op onze Caraïbische rondreis..

General impressions of Charlotte Amalie, St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands

Charlotte Amalie is recognised as a duty-free shopping area like so many Caribbean Islands but we found that most of the shops were even more expensive than in Europe. It was nice to spend a bit of time in the fancy shops but we prefer the local markets where the prices are reasonable and you support the local population.

Our interest was more focussed on historical buildings, mainly used as government buildings or courts. A pity that the fort is in such a poor state but let’s hope the local authorities will consider a restoration of this heritage building. To climb the hills of the capital city, you need some physical condition, even when it is clouded, it is still hot. The flowers, houses, cars and parks are all very colourful. We were very lucky to see a large leguan in the grass. It looked up when we passed by and started posing.

Charlotte Amalie is herkend als een belastingvrij winkelgebied zoals op vele Caraïbische eilanden, maar wij vonden dat vele winkels nog duurder waren dan in Europa. Het was leuk wat tijd in deze exclusieve zaken door te brengen maar wij houden meer van lokale marktjes waar de producten schappelijk geprijsd zijn en je de lokale bevolking ondersteund door iets te kopen. 

Onze interesse ging echter uit naar historische gebouwen die meestal worden gebruikt als overheidsgebouw of gerechtshof. Het is spijtig dat het fort in zo’n slechte staat is, misschien gaat de stad toch nog overwegen hun historisch erfgoed te renoveren. Laat het ons hopen. Om de heuvels van de hoofdstad te beklimmen heb je toch een redelijke conditie nodig. Zelf bij zware bewolking is het nog steeds zeer warm en zwoel. De bloemen, huizen, auto’s en parken zijn allen kleurrijk. We hadden zeer veel geluk een grote leguaan te zien, hij zat in het gras en liftte zijn kop net toen we voorbij wandelden. Hij was niet bang en besloot nog even te poseren..
