Bright light enters St. Hedwig Cathedral via the dome oculus, Berlin

The Saint Hedwig Cathedral in Berlin looks a bit like a temple with a circular hall behind it. Comparable to the Pantheon in Rome but a lot smaller. This church is only 250 years old but one of the most important churches of the city. After the Second World War, the St. Hedwig Cathedral had to be restored.

That’s why the interior is very modern. The stained glass windows are grey with only a few soft colours in it, the opposite of what we normally discover in churches. The floor and altar on the lower level are in black marble. Just like in the Pantheon, the oculus or the dome opening let’s the bright sun light into the middle of the church. I really like my picture of the string of lamps together with the dome opening.

  1. Die groene koepel is speciaal, Filip. Er zijn toch ook historische dingen bewaard. Je foto met lampen is inderdaad geslaagd !

  2. I presume that the oculus is closed with glass in this dome unlike the Pantheon in Rome which is open to the elements.
