Let’s start to inform you where St. Maarten is located. It is a small Caribbean Island of the Dutch Antilles with Philipsburg as capital. However the Northern part of the island is French territory. The smallest region in the world divided up by two nations. The main airport, Princess Juliana Airport is located on the Dutch region at Maho Beach.
We decided to go to Maho beach because we like planes and certainly when the runway is so close by so that spotting becomes an adventure. At Maho Beach this is certainly the case, big boards inform people that it is even dangerous when planes take off. Do not stand in the line of the runway on the beach when big jet planes take off. If you ignore this you could be seriously injured, everyone and everything in the line of the jet streams will be blown away into the sea. My video recording shows this very clearly.
Every hour several small planes land just above the beach and occasionally a big commercial jet. People enjoy taking pictures and videos. The water is warm an ideal for swimming or sunbathing while waiting for the next plane. On the side of the beach there is a live music bar called the “Sunset Bar & Grill”, they serve all kinds of cocktails and beers. Together with a few new American friends we enjoyed some buckets of beer. The local tradition is the order a bucket with six bottles of local beer, so we had to adjust to the local customs. The bar was packed and the party started already around noon.
An important tip for all cruise passengers: this beach is very popular and it takes about 45 minutes to get there by taxi. When driving back there are always traffic jams. Take 2,5 hours into account for your return trip to the port. We don’t want you to miss your ship. It is easy to share a taxi.
Laat ons beginnen met te vertellen dat St. Maarten een klein Caraïbisch eiland van de Nederlandse Antillen is met als hoofdstad Philipsburg. Het noordelijk deel van het eiland is echter Frans territorium. Dit is het kleinste gebied ter wereld dat verdeeld is onder twee landen. De grootste luchthaven, Princes Juliana Airport is gelegen op het Nederlandse deel aan Maho Beach.
We besloten naar Maho Beach te gaan daar we van vliegtuigen houden en zeker als de landingsbaan zo dichtbij is, wordt vliegtuigspotten een avontuur. Op Maho Beach is dit zeker het geval, borden waarschuwen bezoekers dat het zelfs gevaarlijk kan zijn als grote vliegtuigen opstijgen. Ga niet recht achter de startbaan staan als grote straalvliegtuigen vertrekken. Mensen die dit negeren kunnen zwaar gewond geraken, iedereen en alles in de lijn van de luchtverplaatsing wordt weggeblazen in de richting van de zee. Onze video opname toont dit duidelijk aan.
Ieder uur landen enkele kleine vliegtuigen en af en toe een groot commercieel straalvliegtuig. Mensen nemen foto’s en maken video opnames. Het zeewater is warm, dit strand is ideaal voor het zwemmen en zonnebaden terwijl je wacht op het volgende vliegtuig. Aan de zijkant van het strand is er een bar die “Sunset Bar & Grill”noemt, men serveert er allerlei cocktails en biertjes. Samen met nieuwe Amerikaanse vrienden genoten we van enkele emmers bier. Dit is een lokale traditie, iedere emmer bevat zes flesjes bier uit de regio. De bar was vol en het feest startte al rond de middag.
Een belangrijke tip voor alle cruise passagiers: dit strand is zeer populair en de rit naar Maho Beach duurt ongeveer 45 minuten per taxi. Op de weg terug naar het schip zijn er bijna altijd files. Hou rekening met 2,5 uur reistijd als je terug rijd naar de haven. Het zou spijtig zijn als je het schip mist. Er zijn altijd genoeg bezoekers om een taxi te delen..
