St. Nicholas Church, Ljubljana

The yellow grey exterior of the St. Nicholas Church in Ljubljana doesn't raise any expectations. We assumed the soberness and simplicity would be matched inside. We were totally wrong. The interior of the church is covered with frescos, gold leaf, statues and organ pipes. We could easily spend a lot of time looking at each story painted on the ceiling.

De geel grijze gevel van de St. Nicholaskerk in Ljubljana wekt geen hoge verwachtingen. We gingen er van uit dat het sobere en de eenvoud binnen in de kerk weerspiegeld zou worden. Waren wij verkeerd. Het interieur van de kerk is bedolven met fresco's, bladgoud, beelden en orgelpijpen. We zouden hier lange tijd kunnen doorbrengen met het bestuderen van de schilderwerken op het plafond.

Living together with God, the Nikolai (St. Nicholas) church in Rostock

The tower of the Nikolai church in Rostock has a strange appearance; most of the stained glass windows have been replaced by wooden elements and painted in white. These white surfaces against the brown tower draw your attention. Walking around the church, we see that the street passes underneath the side of the church via a small arched opening with above it a colourful image of most likely Saint Nicholas. Behind this alley you find the side door of the church which is no longer used looking at the wild grass in front of it. But who lives here? In the roof of the church, they have made apartments. Some people even have a balcony and satellite dishes. Interesting to see no longer used churches get a new destination. Would you like to live here?

De toren van de Sint Nicolaaskerk in Rostock ziet er wat raar uit; de meeste sierramen zijn vervangen door houten panelen die achteraf wit geverfd zijn. Deze witte panelen in een bruine kerktoren trekken je volle aandacht. Verder wandelend rond de kerk, zie je dat de zijstraat onder de kerk doorloopt via een smalle passage. Boven de gewelfde doorgang hangt een kleurrijke beeltenis van Sint Nicolaas. Achter dit steegje vind je de zijingang van de kerk die niet meer wordt gebruikt gezien de lengte van het onkruid. Maar wie woont er hier? In het dak van de kerk heeft men verschillende appartementen gebouwd. Sommige hebben zelfs een terras en satellietvoorzieningen. Het is interessant te zien dat niet meer gebruikte kerken en nieuwe bestemming krijgen. Zou jij hier graag wonen.?

The Saint Nicolas Church in Brussels, living and working together with God

Churches are most of the time stand alone buildings referred to as the House of God. Here in Brussels, the Saint Nicolas Church originating from the 12th century has been rebuild several times from a Roman to a Gothic style. It is a rather small church but it contains a rich interior with marble, statues, a painting from Rubens, fire glass… The most remarkable aspect of this church is that it is not only in the city centre close to all the people of Brussels but it is a part of a real community. Against the wall of the church you find facades of shops and houses, integrated in the church, it is almost like sharing a flat or a business with God. Would it be possible to live closer to God or start such a blessed business?

Kerken zijn meestal vrijstaande gebouwen die men aanschouwt als het Huis van God. Hier in Brussel staat de Sint Nicolaaskerk die dateert uit de 12de eeuw, maar reeds verschillende keren herbouwd is geweest gaande van de Romaanse stijl naar de Gotische. Het is een kleine kerk maar met een rijk interieur bestaande uit marmer, beeldhouwwerken, een schilderij van Rubens, brandglas.... Het meest merkwaardige aspect van deze kerk is dat het net enkel deel uit maakt van het Brusselse stadscentrum meer van een echte volksgemeenschap. Tegen de kerkmuren zie de façades van winkels en huizen die geïntegreerd zijn in de kerk. Het is alsof je een huis of zaak deelt met God. Is het mogelijk nog dichter bij God te wonen of een nog meer gezegende zaak op te starten?.

Veurne on Ice - Veurne op het ijs

Like many Flemish villages, Veurne also offers ice skating on the market during December and January (ends on 10 January). It is very popular and most of the time combined with a Christmas market. Veurne is a small town with around 8.000 inhabitants. The market place is extraordinary with it's 17th century houses, the city hall, the Saint Nicholas Church, the Saint Walburga Church and it's belfry.

Zoals vele Vlaamse gemeenten kan je in Veurne tijdens december en januari ijsschaatsen op de markt (tot 10 januari). Het is zeer populair en het wordt meestal gecombineerd met een kerstmarkt. Veurne is een klein stadje met ongeveer 8.000 inwoners. De markt is buitengewoon mooi met zijn huizen van de 17de eeuw, het stadhuis, de Sint-Niklaas kerk, de Sint-Walburga kerk en het belfort.
