Overwhelming collection of icons and mosaics in the St. Isaac’s Cathedral

Yesterday we published an article about the exterior of the St. Isaac’s Cathedral in St. Petersburg. From the pictures you could see it was enormous but once you enter this church museum, you are overwhelmed with colour and details. Just look at the inner dome and the ceilings. There were so many people inside but even together we felt so small. We couldn’t resist having our picture taken in front of this amazing altar which contains paintings and icons of Saints. Every item in this church is a piece of art.

Under the communism, religion was forbidden and all religious items were removed, now it provides limited religious services. Probably this church was too beautiful to be destroyed but the Soviet Union has really removed all religious signs from many churches. The St. Isaac’s Cathedral has been restored as a museum.

Gisteren publiceerden we een artikel over de buitenzijde van de St. Isaac’s Kathedraal in St. Petersburg. Op de foto’s kon je reeds zien hoe enorm groot de kerk is maar als je binnen bent wordt je gewoon overspoeld door kleur en details. Kijk eens naar de binnenzijde van de fantastische koepel en de plafonds. Er waren zeer veel mensen in de kerk maar zelfs samen in deze mensenmassa voelden we ons zeer klein. We konden het niet nalaten onze foto te laten trekken voor het ongelooflijke altaar bezet met iconen en schilderijen van heiligen. Ieder stuk in deze kerk is een echt kunstwerk. 

Onder het communistische regime van de Sovjet Unie was Godsdienst verboden en werden alle religieuze elementen van kerken afgehaald. De St. Isaac’s Kathedraal bied nu terug beperkte diensten aan. Waarschijnlijk was de kerk te mooi om ze te vernietigen zoals bij vele andere religieuze gebouwen die nu een andere bestemming hebben. De St. Isaac’s Kathedraal werd gerestaureerd en is heden ten dage een museum..

Walking around St. Isaac’s Cathedral, St. Petersburg

Just like in many places in St. Petersburg, it was not easy to take outdoor pictures due to heavy traffic. The tourist busses just parked on the St. Isaac Square and stay there in front of the cathedral. The traffic becomes a real mess. We would not like to drive here and never will.

This enormous Orthodox Church, St. Isaac’s cathedral was built in the mid 19th century based on the design of architect Auguste Montferrand. The style is Neo-Classicism and they completed the construction works in 40 years. This is unbelievable knowing that most cathedrals have a building process of several hundreds years.

The most impressive is the 101 metres high golden dome surrounded by statues. When you wait to enter the church at these gigantic doors, you feel like an ant, so small. The door picture as well as the columns give an impression of the size of this master piece of architecture.

Net zoals op vele plaatsen in St. Petersburg was het niet gemakkelijk foto’s te maken op een buitenlocatie omwille van het drukke verkeer. Toeristenbussen parkeren gewoon op St. Isaac Square en blijven staan voor de kathedraal. Het verkeer loopt helemaal vast. We zullen het zeker niet wagen hier ooit zelf met de auto te rijden. 

Deze enorme orthodoxe kerk, de St. Isaac kathedraal werd gebouwd in het midden van de 19de eeuw gebaseerd op een ontwerp van architect Auguste Montferrand. De stijl is Neoclassicisme en de constructiewerken werden voltooid in 40 jaar. Dit is echt ongelooflijk in vergelijking met de meeste kathedralen waar bouwwerken soms honderden jaren in beslag namen. 

Het meest indrukwekkende voor ons was de 101 meter hoge gouden koepel omringt door standbeelden. Op het moment je staat te wachten om de kerk binnen te gaan aan deze reusachtige deuren voel je je net zo klein als een mier. De foto’s van het inkomportaal alsook de steunzuilen geven je een idee van de grote van dit architecturaal meesterwerk..
