Walking around St. Isaac’s Cathedral, St. Petersburg

Just like in many places in St. Petersburg, it was not easy to take outdoor pictures due to heavy traffic. The tourist busses just parked on the St. Isaac Square and stay there in front of the cathedral. The traffic becomes a real mess. We would not like to drive here and never will.

This enormous Orthodox Church, St. Isaac’s cathedral was built in the mid 19th century based on the design of architect Auguste Montferrand. The style is Neo-Classicism and they completed the construction works in 40 years. This is unbelievable knowing that most cathedrals have a building process of several hundreds years.

The most impressive is the 101 metres high golden dome surrounded by statues. When you wait to enter the church at these gigantic doors, you feel like an ant, so small. The door picture as well as the columns give an impression of the size of this master piece of architecture.

Net zoals op vele plaatsen in St. Petersburg was het niet gemakkelijk foto’s te maken op een buitenlocatie omwille van het drukke verkeer. Toeristenbussen parkeren gewoon op St. Isaac Square en blijven staan voor de kathedraal. Het verkeer loopt helemaal vast. We zullen het zeker niet wagen hier ooit zelf met de auto te rijden. 

Deze enorme orthodoxe kerk, de St. Isaac kathedraal werd gebouwd in het midden van de 19de eeuw gebaseerd op een ontwerp van architect Auguste Montferrand. De stijl is Neoclassicisme en de constructiewerken werden voltooid in 40 jaar. Dit is echt ongelooflijk in vergelijking met de meeste kathedralen waar bouwwerken soms honderden jaren in beslag namen. 

Het meest indrukwekkende voor ons was de 101 meter hoge gouden koepel omringt door standbeelden. Op het moment je staat te wachten om de kerk binnen te gaan aan deze reusachtige deuren voel je je net zo klein als een mier. De foto’s van het inkomportaal alsook de steunzuilen geven je een idee van de grote van dit architecturaal meesterwerk..

Spectacular views on the Temple Mount where God created man from dust

According to Gen. 2:7 “the Lord God formed man of the dust of the ground” here at this hill. David bought the hill and placed an altar to honour God, his son King Solomon built the Temple of David around 6 centuries before the birth of Jesus. In the year 70, the Temple was destroyed by the Romans. Six centuries later, Mohammed’s spirit went to heaven from this same place. Here stands now the Golden Dome of the Chain next to the Al-Aksa Mosque which dominates the views of Jerusalem from each side you approach the city. The Temple Mount is also called Mount Moriah and you have the most spectacular views on it from the Mount of Olives. In the valley between the two hills, the Jews and Muslims are expecting the arrival of the Messiah. This could be Jesus who comes back for a second time. He will make his way to the Temple Mount via the Golden Gate. The Jews believe that when this happens, the Temple of David will rise again on the same place as the Golden Dome. For this reason the Muslims closed the entrance of the Golden Gate. Will this stop the Messiah?

Volgens Gen. 2:7, “De Heer God maakte de man uit het stof op de grond” hier op deze heuvel. David kocht de heuvel en stelde hier een altaar op om God te eren, zijn zoon Koning Solomon bouwde hier de tempel, 6 eeuwen voor de geboorte van Jezus. In het jaar 70, werd de tempel vernietigd door de Romeinen. Zes eeuwen later ging van op deze plaatst de geest van Mohammed naar de hemel. Hier staat nu de Gouden Koepel van de Ketting naast de Al-Aksa Moskee, die het panorama van Jeruzalem bepaald. De Tempelberg wordt ook Berg Moriah genoemd en je kan deze het beste aanschouwen van op de Olijfberg. In de vallei tussen beide bergen verwachten zowel de Joden als de Moslims de komst van de Messias. Gaat het Jezus zijn voor een tweede keer? Hij gaat door de vallei naar de Tempelberg gaan via de gouden poort. De Joden geloven als dit gebeurd, dat de Tempel van David weer zal herrijzen op dezelfde plaats waar nu de Golden Dome Moskee staat. Voor deze reden hebben de Moslims de ingang van de Gouden Poort dicht gemetseld. Zal dit de Messias tegenhouden?.

The skyline of Haifa dominated by the Bahai temple with its golden dome

When you look at the city of Haifa, the first thing you see is the Bahai Temple and House of Justice. Above and under the golden dome, the Persian gardens are splitting the town in two parts. These religious buildings are a contrast to the modern offices of the government in a skyscraper near the harbour. Because of its special shape, it is called the missile by local people. Haifa is known as one of the Israeli cities where Christians, Muslims and Jews live together in a harmonious way. Could this be the influence of the Bahai religion that stands for peace and harmony? Next to the harbour activities of Haifa, the town has several oil refineries and specialises in the high tech industry.

Het eerste dat opvalt als je naar de stad Haifa kijkt is de Bahai tempel met zijn gouden koepel samen met het justitiegebouw. Boven en onder de gouden koepel zie je de Perzische tuinen die de stad in twee splijten. Deze religieuze gebouwen staan in sterk contrast met de moderne wolkenkrabber van de overheid aan de haven. Vanwege zijn uitzonderlijke vorm, wordt dit gebouw ook de raket genoemd door de lokale bevolking. Haifa staat bekend als een Israëlische stad die leeft in vrede en harmonie tussen de verschillende bevolkingsgroepen van Christenen, Moslims en Joden. Zou dit de invloed van de Bahai zijn die geloven in vrede en harmonie? Naast de havenactiviteiten, heeft Haifa ook verschillende olieraffinaderijen en specialiseert zich in de hoogtechnologische industrie..
