The Heroes of Cavite Square and Monument in Cartagena

Just in front of the harbour you find this square with many palm trees and a war memorial column. It was erected to remember the heroes of the Spanish-American war of 1898. The Spanish lost the war at Cavite, fighting for the colony of the Philippines. When we see some of the monuments linked to the Spanish history of colonies and Spanish Inquisition we wonder why these constructions are still there. Are they proud of their cruelness in South America and Asia?

We probably have to consider that these soldiers didn’t have a choice. So they maybe have an excuse. The bronze statues show the hard live of war but we don’t know who the woman is who sends them back into the battlefield. Maybe it is the Goddess of war. The colourful wall paintings are fantastic and the first one shows the coat of arms of Cartagena. Europe should not be proud of its colonial history.

Net voor de haven vind je een plein met vele palmbomen en een oorlogsmonument in de vorm van een zuil. Deze werd opgetrokken ter herinnering van de helden uit de Spaans-Amerikaanse oorlog van 1898. De Spanjaarden verloren de oorlog van Cavite toen ze vochten om de Filipijnse kolonie. Als we zo’n monumenten zien van uit Spaanse koloniale geschiedenis en de Spaanse Inquisitie, vragen wij ons af waarom deze er nog staan? Zijn zij dan trots op hun wreed verleden in Zuid-Amerika en Azië? 

We vragen ons werkelijk af of deze soldaten wel een keuze hadden, misschien zijn er hier wel verzachtende omstandigheden, maar ze blijven schuldig. De bronzen beelden tonen hoe hard het leven was tijdens de oorlog en we weten niet wie de vrouw is die hen terug stuurde naar het slagveld. Misschien is het de Godin van de Oorlog. De kleurvolle schilderwerken zijn echter fantastisch en het eerste werk geeft het wapenschild van Cartagena weer. Europa mag volgens ons toch niet pronken met zijn koloniaal verleden.

The “Ijzer” river and World War I memorial for King Albert I, Nieuwpoort

The IJzer is the only river in Belgium that flows into the Nord Sea. It is via this river that allied troops during World War I entered Flanders and stopped the German raid on Belgium and France. The locks of the IJzer were closed and the whole area was flooded, everywhere you had trenches, also called trenches of death, and the troops could no longer progress. King Albert I, stood side by side with the allied troops and remained in this area with the Belgium soldiers. He was know as the King-knight and is remembered by the war veterans by building this Albert I memorial on the banks of the IJzer river in Nieuwpoort.

De IJzer is de enige rivier in België die in de Noordzee uitmond. Het is via deze rivier dat de geallieerde troepen in Wereldoorlog I, Vlaanderen binnenkwamen en de Duitse opmars in België en Frankrijk stopten. De sluizen van de IJzer werden gesloten en het hele gebied stond onder water, de troepen konden niet meer vooruit of achteruit. Overal verschansten ze zich in loopgraven, ook wel de dodengangen genoemd. Koning der Belgen, Albert I, stond zij aan zij met de troepen en bleef samen met de Belgische soldaten in dit gebied. Hij werd de Koning Ridder of Koning Soldaat genoemd. Dit monument werd geschonken ter ere aan Koning Albert I door de Wereldoorlog I veteranen en staat in Nieuwpoort op de oever van de IJzer rivier..

The “Hochstrahlbrunnen” fountains and Red Army Soviet War Memorial

Looking forward to the spring and summer, it is always nice to cool down at a beautiful fountain. In Vienna at the end of the Rennweg on Schwarzenbergplatz there is an huge fountain called Hochstrahlbrunnen. It shoots water high in the air and with a bit of wind, you can enjoy the cool spray which has a reach of several tens of metres. On evenings rainbow colours are projected on the water.

Just in front of the fountain, there is a memorial of the Red Army of the Soviet Union. It was built to remember more than 17.000 Soviet soldiers who died in Vienna in 1945. It is surprising to see this memorial here because Austria and the Soviet Union were fighting each other during World War II and Vienna was occupied by the Soviets after the war. The memorial is not popular with the Viennese population.

Vooruitblikkend op de lente en zomer, is het altijd leuk een plaatsje te vinden om af te koelen bij een mooie fontein. In Wenen aan het einde van de Rennweg op de Schwarzenbergplatz staat er een enorme fontein Hochstrahlbrunnen genaamd. Deze spuit water hoog de lucht in en met wat wind, kan je genieten van waterspray die tientallen meters ver vliegt. Van zodra het donker wordt, kleurt het water door lichtprojectie zich afwisselend in alle kleuren van de regenboog.

Juist voor de fontein is er een gedenk monument voor het Rode Leger van de Sovjet Unie. Het werd gebouwd voor de dood van 17.000 Sovjet soldaten te herdenken die hier in Wenen zijn gestorven gedurende de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Het is verrassend dit monument hier te zien daar de Sovjet Unie en Oostenrijk vijanden van elkaar waren en dat Wenen nog bezet is geweest door het Sovjet leger. Het monument blijft echter onpopulair bij de Weense bevolking..
