Improvised shops in the streets of Nazareth

Shopping in Nazareth can not be compared to Europe. Most of the shops we saw were improvised stands on the street or traders showing their products underneath a quickly constructed shelter, protecting them against the heat of the sun. The billboards were very colorful and most of the souvenirs attractive. Most of the shops are in the hands of the Arabic community who is now the main population group in this town where Christianity started. If you like cooking, you certainly find enough spices and herbs as you see on one of the pictures. People were friendly and didn’t hassle their potential customers.

Winkelen in Nazaret kan niet worden vergeleken met Europa. De meeste winkels waren geïmproviseerde kraampjes op straat of onder zelfgemaakte afdakjes om zich te beschermen tegen de schroeiende hitte van de zon. De reclameborden zijn zeer kleurvol en de meeste souvenirs aantrekkelijk. De meerderheid van de winkels is in handen van de Arabische gemeenschap die nu de grootste populatie groep is in de stad waar het Christendom zijn oorsprong vond. Als je van koken houdt, vind je hier zeker genoeg kruiden en specerijen zoals je kan zien op één van de foto’s. De handelaars zijn vriendelijk en niet opdringerig naar hun potentiële klanten..

The house and carpentry of Joseph in Nazareth under the St Joseph church.

Travel article Nr. 2 related to the important historical places in the “Life of Jesus”.

Next to the Basilica of the Annunciation, you find the church of St. Joseph. It was built in 1914 on the same place as the two previous churches out of the Byzantine and the Crusader period but the most important is that it stands above the remains of the house of Joseph and his carpentry shop. Here on this place, Jesus grew up after his return from Egypt with his parents. He worked together with his father in the carpentry workshop. In the church you see a nice painting of the Holy Family in the carpentry shop. We went down in the dungeons of the church to visit the original home of Joseph. Unfortunately it was not possible to take any clear pictures of this. Against one of the church exterior walls you find a super sculpture of Maria and Joseph together with Jesus. The facial expressions are very detailed.

Naast de Basiliek van de Maria Boodschap, vind je de kerk van St. Joseph. Deze werd gebouwd in 1914 op dezelfde plaats als de oorspronkelijke kerken uit de Byzantijnse en Kruisvaarders periode. Maar meer belangrijker, de kerk staat bovenop de overblijfselen van het huis en de schrijnwerkerij van Joseph. Hier op deze plaats, groeide Jezus op na de terugkeer uit Egypte met zijn ouders. Hij werkte samen met zijn vader als timmerman. In de kerk vind je een mooi schilderij terug die de Heilige Familie afbeeld in de schrijnwerkerij. Tijdens ons bezoek zijn we afgedaald in de kelders van de kerk om het originele huis te bezoeken. Spijtig genoeg konden we hiervan geen duidelijke foto’s maken. Tegen één van de buitenmuren van de kerk staat een meesterlijk beeldhouwwerk van Maria en Joseph samen met Jezus. De gezichtsexpressies zijn zeer gedetailleerd..

The skyline of Haifa dominated by the Bahai temple with its golden dome

When you look at the city of Haifa, the first thing you see is the Bahai Temple and House of Justice. Above and under the golden dome, the Persian gardens are splitting the town in two parts. These religious buildings are a contrast to the modern offices of the government in a skyscraper near the harbour. Because of its special shape, it is called the missile by local people. Haifa is known as one of the Israeli cities where Christians, Muslims and Jews live together in a harmonious way. Could this be the influence of the Bahai religion that stands for peace and harmony? Next to the harbour activities of Haifa, the town has several oil refineries and specialises in the high tech industry.

Het eerste dat opvalt als je naar de stad Haifa kijkt is de Bahai tempel met zijn gouden koepel samen met het justitiegebouw. Boven en onder de gouden koepel zie je de Perzische tuinen die de stad in twee splijten. Deze religieuze gebouwen staan in sterk contrast met de moderne wolkenkrabber van de overheid aan de haven. Vanwege zijn uitzonderlijke vorm, wordt dit gebouw ook de raket genoemd door de lokale bevolking. Haifa staat bekend als een Israëlische stad die leeft in vrede en harmonie tussen de verschillende bevolkingsgroepen van Christenen, Moslims en Joden. Zou dit de invloed van de Bahai zijn die geloven in vrede en harmonie? Naast de havenactiviteiten, heeft Haifa ook verschillende olieraffinaderijen en specialiseert zich in de hoogtechnologische industrie..
