Open Benelux Championship – WDSF Senior I - Antwerpen

A few weeks before the Benelux Championship, we were contacted by the Belgian Dance Federation that we promoted from the B-Class to the A-class or the international Championship class. As a consequence we could only participate in the Open Benelux Championship which was at the same time a world ranking competition.

17 couples from 6 countries participated. In this competition we focused predominantly on head positions and stability of our dancing. Due to the adrenaline and our competitive nature we mostly dance too big and too powerful in relation to our technical skills. So we focused on control. We were very happy to reach the semi-finals and this result has put us exactly on place 100 of the World Ranking Senior I. This was our goal for 2014 and it has materialized.

We also had support at the side of the dance floor. Our coach Herman Lak was present and provided comments after each round. We also appreciated very much that one of our first teachers Fons Kaptein came to the competition to support us. Thanks.

Enkele weken voor het Benelux Kampioenschap warden we gecontacteerd door de Belgische Dans Sport Federatie met de mededeling dat we gepromoveerd waren van de B-Klasse naar de A-Klasse of de internationale hoofdklasse. Als gevolg mochten we enkel deelnemen in het Open Benelux Kampioenschap dat ook een Wereld Ranking wedstrijd was.

17 koppels uit 6 verschillende landen waren ingeschreven. Tijdens deze wedstrijd hebben we ons voornamelijk gericht op de hoofdposities en stabiliteit in het dansen. Door de adrenaline en onze competitieve instelling dansen we meestal te groot en te krachtig voor onze technische vaardigheden. Dus gingen we voor de beheersing. We waren heel tevreden met het bereiken van de halve finale en dit resultaat brengt ons exact op plaats 100 van de wereld ranking senior I. Dit was ons doel voor 2014 en we hebben het bereikt. 

We kregen ook veel steun langs de vloer. Onze coach Herman Lak was aanwezig en gaf ons na iedere ronde de nodige tips. Eén van onze eerste leraars, Fons Kaptein, kwam voor ons supporteren en gaf tevens ondersteuning. Hartelijk dank.

Antwerp Diamond Dance sport Cup, WDSF open Senior I

This is our second World Ranking competition and it was a big one. In our age class we were with 62 couples from 19 countries. Luckily we already danced such a competition in Madrid a few weeks ago so we know what to expect. This time we would not be intimidated.

Let’s look at our preparation for this competition. It was non-existing. One dance lesson on Wednesday and Kristel was hit by a heavy cold. She had to stay in bed for a few days and your physical condition gets hit hard. On the evening before the competition we could not yet foresee if we would participate. Sunday morning we got up early at 6:00 am and gave it a try. We drove to Antwerp and started a difficult warming up session. The decision was taken we would compete.

We always take some technical focus points in mind when we dance, this time it was stability in the upper body and don’t rush during dancing. We were pleased with the first round but could not place ourselves directly with the seeded couples of the top of the world. We have an other change in the redance round.

The redance also went fine and the 13 adjudicators gives us 46 out 65 marking for the next round. We are very pleased with this achievement. The third round of dancing was on the same level and we end the competition on place 40 out of 62 couples. Behind us are three couples out of the top 100 world ranking among which number 74. This opens perspectives for the future.

The Antwerp Diamond Dancesport Cup is organised by MDC Belgium and one of the most appreciated WDSF events in the world. This weekend there were more than 700 international couples. We will certainly be back next year. Tomorrow a hard day working but on Thursday we arrive in Malta for the next World Ranking.

Dit is onze tweede Wereldranking wedstrijd en het was een grote. In onze leeftijdscategorie waren we met 62 paren uit 19 landen. Gelukkig hadden we reeds wat ervaring opgedaan in Madrid enkele weken geleden. We wisten dus wat te verwachten. Deze keer gingen we niet worden geïntimideerd.

Hoe hebben we ons voorbereid op deze wedstrijd? Dit is gemakkelijk samen te vatten, niet. Op woensdag een dansles en daarna werd Kristel getroffen door een zware verkoudheid. Ze diende enkele dagen in bed te blijven en dan wordt je conditie sterk op proef gesteld. Je verzwakt gewoon. De avond voor de wedstrijd wisten we nog niet of we gingen deelnemen. Zondagochtend om 6:00 opstaan en we gingen het proberen. We reden naar Antwerpen en begonnen aan een zware en moeilijke opwarming. De beslissing was gevallen, we gingen deelnemen.

Zoals altijd nemen we enkele technische aandachtspunten mee tijdens het wedstrijddansen. Deze keer gingen we voor stabiliteit in het bovenlichaam en niet overhaast dansen. We waren tevreden met de eerste ronde maar konden ons niet direct kwalificeren voor de volgende ronde samen met de rechtstreeks geplaatste wereldtop. We moesten dus hiervoor herkansen.

De herkansing ging ook goed en de 13 juryleden gaven ons 46 van 65 markeringen voor de volgende ronde. We waren heel tevreden met dit resultaat. Toen we voor de derde keer dansten bleef het niveau gelijk en eindigden we de competitie op plaats 40 van 62 paren. We lieten drie paren uit de top honderd achter ons waarbij ook nummer 74 van de wereldranking. Dit biedt mogelijkheden voor de toekomst. 

De “Antwerp Diamond Dancesport Cup”wordt georganiseerd door MDC België en is één van de hoogst gewaardeerde wedstrijden ter wereld. Dit weekend waren er meer dan 700 internationale koppels. Wij komen zeker terug volgend jaar. Morgen een harde dag op het werk en donderdag komen we aan in Malta voor de volgende Wereldranking wedstrijd.

The pedestrian tunnel and Sinksenfoor 2013, Antwerp

At the "Schelde Kaaien" or the docks on the bank of the river that flows through the city of Antwerp, you find the entrance of a pedestrian tunnel to the other side of the Schelde. It was however difficult to find the access to the tunnel. First, I found a cafe with the name "Kleine Tunnel" or small tunnel. This is one of the at least three names of the tunnel: small tunnel, pedestrian tunnel and St. Annatunnel. The name pedestrian tunnel is most frequently used. The small village on the left bank of Antwerp was called St. Anna.

Finally, I found the entrance underneath a large tower building on the opposite side of the street of the "Zuiderterras" cafe. To go underground you stand on a unique rolling wooden escalator. This is the only one still in operation in the world. It brings you 31 metres deep under the river for a length of 572m. When you walk at a normal speed, you will need 10 minutes to reach the other bank. No worry, it is nice and cool underground.

On the left bank of the Schelde, you see a wooden robot looking at the other side. The views are spectacular, you see the docks, vessels sailing by, the Antwerp cathedral, the "Boerentoren" and the skyline of Flemish metropole. Don't lose track of time when you sit on a bench in the sun, you still have to walk back.

Due to a legal dispute, the yearly carnival fair "Sinksenfoor" would in 2013 take place on the Kaaien instead of the "Gedempte Zuiderdokken" but this has been changed again. They are still on the "Gedempte Zuiderdokken" in 2013. We wish the fair that runs from 18 May till 23 June all the best and we will certainly visit it.

Aan de scheldekaaien van Antwerpen vind je de toegang tot de voetgangerstunnel waardoor je de overzijde van de rivier kan bereiken. Het was echter moeilijk de ingang van de tunnel te vinden. Eerst vond ik een café met de naam "Kleine Tunnel". Dit is een van de op zijn minst drie namen: Kleine Tunnel, Voetgangerstunnel en St. Annatunnel. De naam voetgangerstunnel wordt het meeste gebruikt. Het kleine dorp dat vroeger op linkeroever lag heette St. Anna maar is nu verdwenen.

Eindelijk vond ik de ingang onder een torengebouw aan de overzijde van de straat aan het "Zuiderterras" café. Om u ondergronds te begeven gebruik je de unieke houten roltrappen. Dit zijn de enige nog in gebruik ter wereld. Ze brengen je 31 meter diep en de tunnel heeft een lengte van 572 meter. Als je op een normaal tempo wandelt dien je toch rekening te houden met een tijdsbestek van 10 minuten. Het is echter lekker koel onder de grond.

Op linkeroever staat een houten robot naar de stad te kijken. De zichten zijn spectaculair, je ziet de kaaien, boten die voorbij varen, de Antwerpse Kathedraal, de Boerentoren en de skyline van de Vlaamse metropool. Verlies de tijd niet uit het oog als hier op een bankje in de zon zit, je moet nog terug wandelen. 

Door een juridische uitspraak zou de jaarlijkse Sinksenfoor in 2013 niet doorgaan op de Gedempte Zuiderdokken maar op de scheldekaaien. Dit is echter niet meer zo en het stadsbestuur heeft besloten op de Gedempte Zuiderdokken te blijven in 2013. We wensen de kermisuitbaters veel succes toe met de Sinksenfoor 2013 die loopt van 18 mei tot 23 juni. Wij gaan jullie zeker bezoeken..

The modern palace of justice in Antwerp

We have to admit that we like the style of the giant modern building. The silver colour and the shape of the roof tops is special. On the roof you see the six high peaks of the main courts. The citizens of Antwerp call these the "frietzakken" or the bags for French Fries. In my opinion they look like peak hats of witches.

Cars coming from the highway and which enter the city centre drive under this super construction. The palace of justice is recognised as one of the most impressive recent constructions of Belgium. This can be true but it is also very expensive with a total cost of 280 million euro and this for the city of Antwerp which has the highest debt of the whole country.

We moeten toegeven dat we van de stijl van dit gigantisch modern gebouw houden. De zilveren kleur alsook de dakconstructie zijn speciaal. Op het dak zie je zes hoge pieken van de grootste rechtszalen. De inwoners van Antwerpen noemen deze de frietenzakken, ik zie ze eerder als heksenhoeden. 

Auto's die van de snelweg komen en de stad binnenrijden passeren onder het gebouw door. De super constructie wordt aanschouwd als een van de belangrijkste nieuwe bouwwerken van België. Dit kan wel waar zijn maar het is ook een enorm duur gebouw met een totaal kostenplaatje van 280 miljoen euro en dit voor Antwerpen de stad met de grootste schuldberg van het ganse land..

The last game degustation of this year in “Het Fornuis”, Antwerpen

The Stove is the English name of this fantastic 1 Star Michelin restaurant in Antwerp. The miniature stoves at the entrance on the ground floor set the right feeling. The wooden interior in combination with bright polished silver work match perfectly in this place.

We start with an amuse of game pâté. Kristel had a started of cold marinated scallops, an unbelievable taste. I went for the lightly seared scallops covered by thin raw goose liver which melts on it. A risky choice but very good. The main course was the game, a well sever portion of roe with vegetables and black pudding. For the next game, we will have to wait until October.

Het Fornuis is een 1 ster Michelin restaurant in Antwerpen. De miniatuur fornuisjes aan de ingang op het gelijkvloers zetten onmiddellijk de toon. Het houten interieur in combinatie met het opgeblonken zilverwerk past perfect bij dit etablissement. 

We vangen aan met een amuse van wildpaté. Kristel koos als voorgerecht de koude gemarineerde St. Jacobsnoten, een ongelooflijke smaak. Ik ging voor de licht gebakken St. Jacobsnoten bedekt met rauwe ganzenlever die er over smelt. Een gewaagde keuze maar heel lekker. Het hoofdgerecht was jacht, een goede portie reenootjes met groentjes en bloedworst. Voor het volgende jacht etentje zullen we moeten wachten tot in oktober..

Drama, art and dance in the “Toneelhuis” or “Bourlaschouwburg”, Antwerpen

This theatre is located on the “Komedieplaats” in Antwerp. The building was completed in 1834 by the famous architect Pierre Bourla, this could also be deducted from the name of the theatre. On the square, the circular shape of the “Toneelhuis” draws your attention. The dome is supported by symmetric columns and above each window you see busts and statues.

On the top floor you find the Foyer where you can enjoy a drink, snack or complete meal. The ceiling of the Foyer is amazing. In the lobby we have a break in one of the red couches. Around us you see busts of well known Belgian artists. The portraits with a combination of black, grey, skin colour and light are unique.

Dit theatergebouw is gelegen aan de Komedieplaats in Antwerpen. Het gebouw werd voltooid in 1834 door de beroemde architect Pierre Bourla wat reeds kon worden afgeleid uit de naam van de Bourlaschouwburg. Op het plein valt het ronde gebouw onmiddellijk op. De koepel wordt ondersteund door symmetrische zuilen waar tussen busten afgebeeld zijn. Op het dak staan verschillende standbeelden. 

Op de bovenste verdieping vind je de Foyer waar men iets kan drinken, een snackje eten of een volledige maaltijd nuttigen. Het beschilderde plafond van dit restaurant is ongelooflijk. In de lobby rusten we even uit op een rood bankstel. Rondom ons zie je portretten van hedendaagse Belgische acteurs en toneelspelers. De combinaties van het licht, zwart, grijs en huidskleur zijn uniek..

Disappointing result at the Benelux Championship 2012

The Benelux Championship was organised by MDC - BDSF in Antwerp this year. We consider the Benelux as one of the most important competitions of the year and were looking forward to a good result. The last few weeks we intensified our training and could see real quality improvement.

At the competition we were happy of our dancing but did not qualify for the second round. We were very surprised of this. In the redance round our quality and movement even improved but still not good enough to make it in the second round. Luckily next week at the Holland Masters we will have a new chance to achieve a better result. Our coach will be present next week to give feedback and tips during the competition.

Het Benelux Kampioenschap werd dit jaar georganiseerd door MDC-BDSF in Antwerpen. Wij aanschouwen het Benelux als één van de belangrijkste wedstrijden van het jaar en keken uit naar een goed resultaat. De laatste weken hebben we onze trainingsfrequenties verhoogt en was er wezenlijk vooruitgang geboekt in danskwaliteit. 

Op de competitie waren we blij van de dansen die we hebben gebracht maar werden niet geplaatst voor de tweede ronde. Dit verbaasde ons sterk. In de herkansing verbeterde onze kwaliteit en beweging maar het was nog steeds niet voldoende om te kwalificeren voor de volgende ronde. Gelukkig krijgen we volgende week een nieuwe kans op de Holland Masters en hopen we het daar beter te doen. Onze trainer zal volgende week aanwezig zijn om feedback en tips te geven gedurende de wedstrijd.

The best Carnival in Belgium, The Sinksenfoor in Antwerpen

The Sinksenfoor in Antwerp, Belgium, is probably the biggest carnival fair of the country and most likely the best one. We certainly love it. There are mega attractions like Booster Maxx, XXL, Deca Dance, Wild mouse, Eclipse Virus, Polyp, small rollercoasters, rides for the children... Next to the attractions, you have many opportunities to eat a snack in one of the Pita, hamburger, pancake or candy shops. You need however to be lucky with the weather. For us it was rather clouded. The fair is located on the Vlaamse Kaai in Antwerpen and after your visit you have several places to go for a drink.

De Sinksenfoor in Antwerpen is hoogstwaarschijnlijk de grootste kermis van het land en mogelijk ook de beste. Wij houden er zeker van. Er staan mega attracties zoals Booster Maxx, XXL, Deca Dance, Wild Mouse, Eclipse Virus, Polyp, kleine achtbanen, molens voor de kinderen... Naast de attracties zijn er ook vele mogelijkheden om iets te eten: een pita, hamburger, pannenkoek of wat snoep aan een van de kraampjes. De kermis staat op de Vlaamse Kaai in Antwerpen en na je bezoek vind je hier ook vele leuke kroegen om iets te drinken..

Het Pakhuis, Vlaamse kaai, Antwerpen

If you are looking for a special place to have a drink or something to eat in Antwerp, go to "Het Pakhuis" located on Vlaamse Kaai. You will not find any of the normal Belgian beers because they only serve home brewed beer. They serve blond, brown and a high alcohol percentage beer called "Bangelijke". It's a nice place to visit and have fun.

Als je zoekt naar een unieke plaats om iets te gaan drinken of te eten in Antwerpen, ga naar het Pakhuis op de Vlaamse Kaai. Hier vind je niet de normale Belgische bieren maar enkel huisgebrouwde producten. Men serveert er een blond, bruin en een sterk bier genaamd een Bangelijke. Het is een leuke plaatst om te bezoeken.

Sinksenfoor, Antwerpen (Carnival Fair, Antwerp)

On Saturday 5 June, we went to the "Sinksenfoor" the biggest carnival fair of Belgium in Antwerp on the "Vlaamse Kaai". It was a super sunny evening with many attractions, food and drinks. You can spend hours on this fair, it is never boring. Even if you don't want to go on the rides, you can observe others having fun or being tense from the high, fast and scary attractions. If you are a fan of fairs, this is the one to visit in Belgium and it is still open until July 4, 2010. I have added a few pictures, and a video of the attractions that impressed me the most.

Op zaterdag 5 juni zijn we naar de Sinksenfoor geweest, de grootste kermis van België te Antwerpen op de Vlaamse Kaai. Het was een ongelooflijk mooie avond met veel zon, attracties, eten en drank. Je kan hier uren doorbrengen, het is nooit vervelend. Zelfs als je niet op deze molens gaat, is het nog steeds leuk anderen te observeren, hoeveel plezier of schrik ze hebben van deze hoge, snelle en angstaanjagende machines. Als je een liefhebber bent van kermissen, dan is dit de kermis die je moet bezoeken in België en het is nog open tot en met 4 juli 2010. Ik heb enkele foto's toegevoegd, en een video van de molens die het meeste indruk op mij maakten..
