The port of Rotterdam and modern impressions

The beating heart of Rotterdam is its port. It is one of the most important industrial ports in the world and responsible for the blooming economy of the city. Here you find the largest containerships ever built, dry docks for ship repair, oil refineries and the occasional cruise ship. We start our discovery boat trip at the Erasmusbrug.

After taking a picture of the Rotterdam skyline with the Euromast, we enter deeper into the port. We pass by tall cranes which automatically load and unload containers. The "CMA CGM Marseille" is fueling and loading. Looking at the small rescue boat hanging at the back, I wouldn't like to be launched into the water via this. On our return we see the retired cruise ship SS Rotterdam of the Holland America Line. It is now used as a hotel.

Around the old port we took take a few nice pictures of a red light boat, a green Jacuzzi boat with cold beer, the famous cube houses, a church and modern architecture. Exploring the port, Leuvehaven and the city centre of Rotterdam is fun.

Markthal of Rotterdam, world class modern architecture

The city of Rotterdam is the high rise capital of The Netherlands and keeps on investing to put its stamp on the world tourist map. In 2015, it was recognised as one of the most attractive cities in Europe. One of the latest architectural art pieces is the "Markthal" or market hall, an investment of almost 200 million euro.

The modern Markthal has been built in a U-shape form. On the side and top of the U-shape they created apartments. People who live here have a window inside their apartment looking down on the market.

Inside the markhal, looking up to the ceiling you see these windows but more importantly, you are flabbergasted by the enormous colorful paintings of fruit, vegetables and fish. Looking down you see the rolling staircases and back to the exit, a glass wall, intensifying the views of modern Rotterdam.

In the Markthal you can buy quality products: meat, nuts, fruit, vegetables, fish, cheese, Dutch syrup waffles, donuts, chocolate, herbs and spices. The most interesting experience is that some of the merchants also have a roof terrace where you can taste dishes with their ingredients. We tried some Pinchos with wine and the girls loved it. Cheers.

Proost.

Flying CityJet Fokker 50 to London City airport, Rotterdam

The best way to fly from The Netherlands to London is from Rotterdam (The Hague) airport. For us the airport is close by, about 15km from our home and you arrive in London City Airport, close to the center of the UK capital. What more can you wish for.

We booked KLM but the flight was executed by CityJet with a Fokker 50 propeller plane. A nice experience to fly such a small propeller aircraft made by the former Dutch company Fokker. The sound is completely different and it flies slower. The trip is however short, just crossing the North Sea and you are in London.

Parkheuvel, our favourite restaurant in The Netherlands

Restaurant Parkheuvel in Rotterdam with its two Michelin Stars is by far the best restaurant we have been to in The Netherlands. Before entering we went for a walk alongside the Nieuwe Maas River up to the Erasmusbrug. Almost in front of the restaurant there is a large cargo ship docking. We take a picture of the Parkheuvel outside with in the background the Euromast Tower of Rotterdam.

We had a lunch appointment with a few friends and are the first to arrive. The host invites us to the lounge bar for a drink. As soon as everyone was there the amuses were served together with house Champagne Paul Roger. We all selected the menu recommended by the Chef.

The first starter was marinated scallops with truffle together with a bottle of Meursault Coche-Dury. An excellent wine from the Bourgogne region, France. The second starter was ravioli stuffed with chicken from Bresse and langoustine.

As main course we had Dutch hare together with a red Medoc, Léoville Marquis de Lascases a top Saint Julien from the Bordeaux region France. Again an excellent wine. This is the advantage of having lunch with 6 people, you can share exclusive wines.

We end our lunch with a chocolate dessert, cheese and sweets. A friend could not resist to try the mandarin dessert to. At was a nice afternoon and we returned home by train.
