Easter at the Belgian Chocolate House, Brussels

Before we take off in Brussels, we bought some chocolate in the Belgian Chocolate House. They have one of our favorite brands “Neuhaus. Most of the time we buy their pralines (bonbons) but this time we selected chocolate bars. Souvenir boxes show the main attractions of Brussels like the Queens Gallery, the Main Square, the City Hall, Manneken Pis and the Atonium. Neuhaus has also a large Easter Bunny and eggs.

There are also other famous brands for sale like Godiva chocolate and Jules Destrooper cookies. When we are at Brussels airport, we don’t skip this shop. Kristel is addicted to chocolate.

Vooraleer we opstijgen in Zaventem kochten we nog wat chocolade in het Belgian Chocolate House. Zij verkopen één van onze favoriete merken: “Neuhaus”. Meestal kopen we hun pralines maar deze keer kozen we voor de chocolade repen. Hun souvenirdozen tonen de bezienswaardigheden van de stad: de Koninginnengalerij, de Grote Markt, het stadhuis, Manneken Pis en het Atonium. Neuhaus verkoopt ook grote Paashazen en eitjes. 

Men verkoopt er ook het andere beroemde merk Godiva chocolade en Jules Destrooper koekjes. Als we op de luchthaven zijn gaan we deze winkel niet voorbij. Kristel is verslaafd aan chocolade.

Simply Meat in the top quality restaurant Bovis, Zaventem

Above the restaurant entrance you read: "Bovis, Simply Meat". It must be a nightmare for vegetarians but indeed in this restaurant you can only eat meat, no fish meals available. In the past they had one fish dish on the menu for people who visited with a group and who preferred fish. It was extremely rare that someone ordered this so they decided to drop it on the menu.

When you like meat, this is the place to be. Meat lovers have to try Restaurant Bovis in Zaventem, they will not regret it. As Amuse Bouche, you get a freshly made pâté with excellent bread. For a starter we always take a mixed meat plate selected by the Chef. This time it was a beef Carpaccio, different kinds of ham and salami, pâté, croquets from Osso Buco and sweet breads.

As a main course we decided on the tartar of dry aged Peimonte beef and the entrecote of Holstein, a top beef breed. We paired it with an excellent Italian wine, Brunello di Montalcino Fattoi. As a dessert we had a coffee and an instantly prepared Sabayon. We can't wait to go back.

Boven de restaurantdeur hangt een plaat met de tekst: "Bovis, Simply Meat". Dit moet een nachtmerrie zijn voor vegetariërs maar de realiteit is dat er in dit restaurant alleen vleesgerechten worden geserveerd, geen vis. In het verleden stond er één visgerecht op de kaart, voor groepen waar iemand meekwam die geen voorkeur gaf aan vlees, maar dit werd bijna nooit gekozen. Hierdoor besloot men het visgerecht van de kaart te schrappen.

Als je van vlees houdt, is dit het ultieme restaurant. Vleesliefhebbers dienen Restaurant Bovis in Zaventem te proberen, ze zullen er geen spijt van hebben. Als Amuse Bouche kregen we een vers gemaakte paté met uitstekend brood. Als voorgerecht kiezen we altijd voor een mix voorgerecht samengesteld door de Chef. Deze keer was het een rundcarpaccio, verschillende soorten ham en salami, paté en kroketten van Osso Buco en kalfszwezeriken. 

Als hoofdgerecht kozen we de tartaar van "Dry Aged" Peimonte rundvlees en de entrecote van Holstein rund, een top ras. Dit werd gepaard met een uitstekende Italiaanse wijn, Brunello di Montalcino Fattoi. Als nagerecht kozen we nog een koffie en een a la minute geklopte Sabayon. We kunnen niet wachten hier terug te keren.

Tourist friendly St. Martinus Church, Zaventem

The St. Martinus Church is located in the little town of Zaventem near Brussels Airport. Already from the exterior you see an announcement that everyone is welcome. Once inside a wooden board with poster welcomes all guests and particularly tourists. We wonder if there are many tourists visiting the town of Zaventem?

We were surprised to see such a beautiful arched ceiling supported by columns decorated with gold-leaf crowns. The choir and confession seats contain wooden carved statues. The church has amazing stained glass art which is not visible from the exterior. Each glass window has a different design, most of them are classics but there are also a few modern pieces.

The master piece of the church is a painting of Antoon van Dijck. It dates from the 17th century and displays a Christian soldier who shares a part of his coat with a beggar. What a nice church for such a small town.

De St. Martinuskerk is gelegen in de kleine stad Zaventem dicht bij de luchthaven van Brussel. Reeds buiten kan je berichten lezen die aankondigen dat iedereen hier welkom is. Eens in de kerk staat er een houten bord met een poster om alle mensen te verwelkomen en in het bijzonder de toeristen. We vragen ons af of er wel veel toeristen naar Zaventem dorp komen?

We waren verrast hier zo'n mooi gewelfd plafond ondersteund door met goudblad versierde zuilen aan te treffen. Het koor en de biechtstoelen bestaat uit ingekerfde houten beelden. De kerk heeft een grote verzameling brandglas dat echter niet zichtbaar is aan de buitenzijde. Ieder sierglazen venster toont een ander ontwerp, de meeste zijn klassiek maar je vindt er ook enkele moderne exemplaren. 

Het pronkstuk van de kerk is een schilderij uit de 17de eeuw van Antoon van Dijck dat een bekeerde soldaat afbeeld die een deel van zijn jas geeft aan een bedelaar. Wat een mooie kerk voor zo'n kleine stad.

Swissport strike at Brussels Airport causes problems for our cruise

The company which handles luggage of many airlines at Brussels Airport has a conflict with the unions. Since last Sunday, the staff decided to strike and passengers can not take their suitcases’ on holiday. We had to leave for our cruise starting from Barcelona and the strike was still on.

Going on a cruise without luggage is not ideal. What were our options? Departing from a different airport or driving 1.400 km by car. Both options would cost us an additional 700 euro in travel costs. We decided to wait and go to the airport in the hope the strike would be over. No luck. We were not allowed to check in luggage and if we would do so, it would arrive in Barcelona after departure of the ship. We were allowed to take some extra handlugguage.

We bought two extra small size bags in the airport shop at off course increased prices. All products were reprised and the shop owners were taking advantage of the misery of passengers. Congratulations.

On the picture you see Kristel repacking, we left two big suitcases behind and replaced them by two hand bags. On our cruise we will be obliged to buy a suitcase and some clothing. We are already preparing a claim for damages.

To all our blog friends, we will not be so active this month because we are travelling and on a ship. The daily publications will go on. The articles related to the cruise are expected to be published as of June.

Het bedrijf Swissport dat de bagage voor vele luchtvaart maatschappijen op Brussels Airport afhandelt heeft een conflict met de vakbonden. Sinds vorige zondag is er een staking en kunnen passagiers hun koffers niet mee op vakantie nemen. Wij hadden een vlucht geboekt naar Barcelona op woensdag om in te schepen voor onze Celebrity Cruise. De staking was nog steeds aan de gang.

Op cruise vertrekken zonder bagage is ver van ideaal. Wat waren onze opties? Vertrekken uit een andere luchthaven of met de auto 1.400 km rijden. Beide opties zouden ongeveer 700 euro extra kosten teweeg brengen. We besloten af te wachten en naar de luchthaven te gaan, in de hoop dat de staking beëindigd zou worden. Geen geluk! We mochten onze bagage niet inchecken en indien dit wel toegelaten werd, zou ze nooit voor de afvaart van de cruise in Barcelona aangekomen zijn. We kregen toelating extra handbagage mee te nemen. 

We kochten dus twee extra kleine tassen in de luchthaven winkel die natuurlijk zijn prijzen had verhoogd. Op alle handbagage had men nieuwe verhoogde prijzen geplakt en profiteerde men van de miserie van de passagier. Proficiat. 

Op de foto zie je Kristel alles herpakken. We lieten twee grote valiezen achter en namen twee extra kleine tassen mee. Op de cruise zullen we verplicht zijn een nieuwe valies en kleding te kopen. Onze schadeclaim wordt al voorbereid. 

Aan al onze blogvrienden, we gaan niet zo actief zijn deze maand daar we reizen en op een schip verblijven. De dagelijkse publicaties gaan echter door. Artikelen gerelateerd aan de cruise zullen worden gepubliceerd vanaf juni.
