Emperor Qin Shi Huang protected by the terracotta Army, Xian

The grave of the first emperor of China was constructed about 2 centuries before Christ and only discovered in 1974. A similar story like the discovery of Machu Pichu in Peru.

The tomb of the Emperor located in a hill behind the Terracotta Army is not opened yet. From information found on the site the tomb would not only be protected by the clay army of more than 8.000 soldiers but also by booby traps and a river of toxic liquid. The future will probably reveal its true nature.

We were astonished by the size of the main hall and the rows of soldiers in front of us. They all have different faces and expressions. At the time the archaeologists removed the soil on top of the statues they were still coloured but the paint disappeared fast after contact with air. Some of the corridors in which soldiers stand guard are still closed for this reason. One hopes to find a technology which could preserve the colours.

After visiting the archaeological site you enter a museum which holds many items of the region from the Qin dynasty. In the shop, my wife convinced me not to buy a full size Terracotta soldier replica for in our living room. I still regret this decision.

A bicycle tour on the city wall of Xian

Xian was once considered a big city in China but nowadays with only 4 million inhabitants it is a small town. One of the most amazing features of the city is the defence wall which is still intact. It surrounds the old city of Xian and has a length of almost 14km. It is a bit too long to walk around it but you can rent a bicycle which we did together with some other Belgians.

It is hard to believe how high and wide the wall is over such a long distance. We occasionally stop to take pictures from the heavy traffic below, unique hotels, modern houses built in similar style and we even saw an open air theater from above. A pity there was so much fog but that was everywhere the case in China.

Discovering Xian with the Small Pagoda of the Wild Goose

In our first afternoon in Xian we visit the gardens, museum of the city and the Small Pagoda of the Wild Goose from the Tang dynasty. It is not so small with its 43 metres and its appearance makes it look a lot older than it actually is, about 1300 years.

Next to the pagoda there is a fabulous wild rose garden. You can already see a few roses at the foot of the tower. Buildings in the park, the paintings and wood carvings all look great. A different world than what we are used to.

At the Jianfu Temple you find a 10 ton heavy bell which sound can be heard almost five km far. Many people were attracted by its strength and I gave it a try to ring the bell. It is incredible how the vibration goes through your body.

On our way from Beijing to Xian, taking up responsibility in the train

We continue writing of our China adventures. We took the night train from Beijing to Xian. Taking a train in China is an adventure. In those days no one understood English and I was assigned as the guide responsible for the luggage of a group of about twenty people. On top of this one bed in our compartment was occupied by an unknown person. It meant that one person of our group had to take a bed in another wagon of the train. Having already taken up some responsibility all the eyes were on me, so I volunteered. Kristel was furious. After departure and the last stop before more than 1.100km journey the unknown passenger didn’t show up. So I stayed with my wife who was still angry. Before we sleep, I do a bit of work on the laptop. The clue of the story is, think twice before acting.

Arriving in Xian, I found back all suitcases and bags, and the group was happy. Like in every Chinese big city, from the first moment you step outside the station or airport you get sucked in by chaos and crowds. We first drop of our bags in the hotel, enjoy a shower and have lunch.

Kristel was razend.

Comparing the city defence walls of Dubrovnik, Tallinn and Xian

We have been to several places in the world where defence walls play an important role in the city's history. Maintenance of these walls, which are sometimes more than a thousand years old, is extremely important. They are part of the image of the city, recognition by UNESCO and a major source of income from tourism.

Let's start with Dubrovnik, a city in Croatia we just visited. It is allowed to walk on the wall around the old town of Dubrovnik. The construction is still intact and on each one of the corners you find a fortress or defence tower. The length is about 2 km, so this must be possible for many visitors. It is one of the most impressive city walls we have seen.

For the next defence wall, we go back to last year when we were in Tallinn, Estonia. Here it is not possible to walk around the city on the wall. There are some large sections still intact and they look great. It is no surprise to us that the defense wall and gates of Tallinn are the main tourist attractions of the city.

As last defence wall, we look to an other continent, Asia. This must be the most impressive city defense wall we have ever seen. The wall of Xian in China, not to be confused with the Great Wall of China because that is not a city wall. In Xian, the wall is 16 m wide and has a length of 26 km. It is completely intact and it is possible to rent a bike to cycle around the city on the wall. We really enjoyed this bike tour with great views over the city of Xian.
