National Library in Quito, a fusion of modern and classic architecture

Looking at the National Library book collection in Quito, you realise that the local population doesn't read that much. The architecture of the building and the gardens are however extraordinary.

The first two floors of the historical building were preserved and were covered with a metal glass triangle ceiling. A fusion of modern art with a classic arched building. The staircases take it a step further in combining different architectural styles.

Urban Center in Bologna library, the child room

The library located at Piazza Maggiori is an amazing building which combines the original elements like the painted ceiling with modern additions like a glass floor. On the top floor you find the Urban Center where visitors are invited to use electronic tools to get to know certain subject matters and areas of the city. You also see the old technology of blackboard classrooms.

On the ground floor there was an exhibition covering child bedrooms and toys from 1900 till 1950. Most of it was made out of wood and we recognised even a Pinocchio doll. The most intriguing for me was a small carousel holding wooden planes.

The different room styles in the National Library of Helsinki

The building of the National Library in Helsinki is being renovated but we still decided to have a look inside. There were almost no visitors and a unfriendly receptionist insisted that all bags and jackets were put into a locker. One would expect a warmer welcome but this was not the case.

The library itself dates from 1640 and had an impressive interior. The first three rooms looked similar. The walls were hidden by bookshelves, arched ceilings which are decorated, rectangle shaped rooms supported by large columns covering several floors. Going further into the library you enter a circular room with about 7 floors. The views from the ground floor and the top floor are very different. It is worth going upstairs to have a look. A library that we recommend for a visit.

Amazing libraries in the Strahov monastery, Prague

There are a few libraries in the world that are really impressive. I believe that both libraries in the Strahov monastery with their 700.000 books are in this category. The first room is the Philosophy library from 1784 in Rococo design; the books are stored in wooden racks which could be collected by climbing a movable staircase. The book wall is supported by columns finished with golden elements and a balcony with vases. The ceiling painted by Franz Anton Maulbertsch is just amazing.

The second library called Theology room is even older; it was completed in the baroque design around 1679. Some of the books are more than 1.000 years old. Who could read in those days? In this library, I was astounded by the ceiling; there are no words for its beauty. The monastery is open for tourists but very restricted, check the opening hours and accept that the staff is not so friendly but you have to see this.

The beautiful National library of Austria in Vienna

The National Library of Austria has the largest collection of the country which could be expected. It was built during the 18th century and is more than 200 years old. The most impressive area is the Prunksaal or the State Hall, whiich is almost 300 years old. The books are stored against the walls up to a high altitude, we like the movable staircases to assist rearders in collecting the works they would like to consult. The State Hall contains sculptures, frescoes, wall paintings, arches, and globes. On the roof of the building you see statues and a golden globe. For us this is most likely the most beautiful library we have ever seen.
