Belgenmonument on the ”Amersfoortseberg” in Amersfoort

On this blog we have already written several articles about WWI but all related to the “Westhoek” region in Belgium. We covered cities like Ieper, Diksmuide, Passchendale and Veurne. Being in Amersfoort in the mid east of The Netherlands, we were surprised to encounter a monument to remember Belgians in WWI. The distance between Amersfoort and Flanders battlefields is about 270km. About 20.000 Belgians looked for shelter in this Dutch village and were welcomed by the community of Amersfoort. After the war, a monument to remember the victims was erected on the Amersfoortseberg. On the sculptures you see PAX, the angel of peace.

The most important gate of Amersfoort, the “Koppelpoort”

This combination of wall, castle, and water gate is 500 years old and has the same functionality as the Monnikendam, it is a defence line for the city and regulates the water in the city canals. The bridge could be manned on the first floor and the towers with soldiers carrying bows and arrows. Look at the red white blinds they added to protect the glass windows and doors. Alongside the river banks trees were planted which blend in with the green character of Amersfoort. Above the pedestrian walkway hangs a shield with two lions holding a crown.

The “Monnikendam” and a park called “Plantsoen op de Stadswal”, Amersfoort

The 600 year old city wall crossed a canal where they built a bridge called the “Monnikendam”. It is not a normal bridge but a gate which could block the water way. It was a defence line for the inner city but could also adjust the water level in the canals. It is amazing what the Dutch already did with water constructions around the year 1400. Alongside the wall and the city ring, you now find a beautiful park called “Plantsoen op de Stadswal”. It was here that hundreds of years ago the rich people had their villas. We just enjoyed the flowers, art and walking across small bridges in a green environment.

Spring Event drive with super cars in Amersfoort

This is a dream of most men, a super car. Unfortunately most of us can not afford these shinny and powerful machines, but we can still enjoy watching them in a top gathering like on the Spring Event in Amersfoort. Yesterday around 12 o’clock, tens of these super cars arrived at the Golden Tulip hotel. We were also there to take some pictures and see the cars in action. We were the most impressed with Viper, Ferrari and Aston Martin. There were also other dream cars like Porsche GT3, BMW Z8, Mercedes SL and Nissan GTR. Probably I am missing a few brands but it was a lot of fun. Below you find a video of the cars arriving and some real action. The sound of the screaming engines is very impressive when the car accelerates.
