The Port of Castries on the volcanic island of St. Lucia

Many islands in the world are volcanic but St. Lucia is exceptional because the port is located in a flooded crater of a dead volcano. It is amazing to realise that the geographical landscape is changing so dramatically that a cruise ship is sailing into a crater of a volcano.

The capital of St. Lucia is located at the edge of the crater around the port. On the one side the small fisher boats sail out at night, a little bit further you find a big market place and the city centre. Alongside the main water surface of the port, there are small areas with yachts and luxury houses. We have a drink on our terrace and wait for the departure of the ship. We see the dusk entering and it becomes romantic.

Local community of Castries, the capital of St. Lucia

Arriving at Castries, you see a small white pyramid of the “Alliance Française”, it is one of the unique modern buildings of the capital of St. Lucia. The island is known for its tropical rainforest and the beautiful coast line. The city of Castries however is not touristic at all. You hardly see visitors and it provided us the opportunity to mingle with the local population.

People are on the streets and there is a lot of activity on the market. It was partially clouded and the sun appeared occasionally, it felt however like we were in a sauna. The humidity must have been close to a 100%. People are very religious because the church was completely full for a funeral, there must have been a few thousand believers. On the Derek Walcott Square an enormous old tree was the main highlight; in the surrounding streets we saw some nice wooden houses and a public library.
