The museum of Ephesus with the statue of Artemis

In Selçuk, you find the museum of Ephesus where they restore and expose the pieces of art archaeologists find back in the ancient town. The statue of Artemis was very impressive. This Goddess was worshiped by the Greeks and Romans for the fertility. She is seen as the mother of the Gods and she holds power over nature and its animals. That’s why the statue also contains images of animals in the jewellery and clothing. The original statue stood in the temple of Artemis which was destroyed. In the Roman Empire you find several replicas of this statue, one here in Selçuk but also in the Vatican Museum in Rome.

The ancient town of Ephesus with the library of Celsus

It was a very hot day when we visited the ancient town of Ephesus which had its first inhabitants around 4.000 years B.C. In those days, this was a harbour but now the sea has retreated and is more than 10 km away from the site. It was an important city of the Roman Empire and it had one of the largest theathers with a capacity of 24.000 spectators. It was the second largest city of the Roman Empire with 250.000 inhabitants. The most fascinating building is the Library of Celsus, which was built out of respect for the Roman Senator Celsus in the year 135. The library is also his tomb. This ancient town is an amazing place which you should certainly visit it when you are in this region of Turkey. For us, this is more impressive than any other archaeological site we have ever visited.

The town of Selçuk, relatively unknown but visited by many tourists

Near Izmir and Kusadasi you find the small town of Selçuk. We had never heard of it but it is visited by many tourists because of the Museum of Ephesus in the city centre. The historical site of Ephesus with its library as one of the world wonders is less than 2km from town. So almost everyone who visits Ephesus also drives along or visits this town. You find here the ruins of Ottomans castle, several Mosques, a fortress, and many piece of art in the street. Enjoy the pictures.
