It was a very hot day when we visited the ancient town of Ephesus which had its first inhabitants around 4.000 years B.C. In those days, this was a harbour but now the sea has retreated and is more than 10 km away from the site. It was an important city of the Roman Empire and it had one of the largest theathers with a capacity of 24.000 spectators. It was the second largest city of the Roman Empire with 250.000 inhabitants. The most fascinating building is the Library of Celsus, which was built out of respect for the Roman Senator Celsus in the year 135. The library is also his tomb. This ancient town is an amazing place which you should certainly visit it when you are in this region of Turkey. For us, this is more impressive than any other archaeological site we have ever visited.

ReplyDeleteWe have been to Ephesus and agree with you that it is indeed impressive. It is hard to pick what one would consider the most impressive archeological site. On our tour of Greece and Turkey, we asked our tour director what he considered to be the most impressive archeological site, and he said Petra. We visited Petra about 8 years later, and I think we agree with him.
