Leaving Buenos Aires on a cruise ship

Buenos Aires port is mainly focused on cargo. There is a cruise terminal but it is all a bit primitive. About 100 cruise ships a year dock here and most of them are small. After check-in and security control, you exit the building again and are transferred to the cruise ship in busses. A strange feeling driving through a port between high walls of containers.

We enjoy the views of the port, containers, factories, liquid storage capacity and the skyline of Buenos Aires. We are on our way to Uruguay but will return to Argentina soon. Next to the Celebrity Infinity, there are also cruise ships from Ibero and Aida in port.

Avenue of the 9th July, Buenos Aires

Even at the traffic lights, pedestrians need some time to cross this road. It is not for nothing the widest street in the world with in each direction 9 lanes. In Europe we don't even have highways which are so wide. The Avenue is well known for its width and busy traffic, its name comes from the independence date of Argentina.

There are several landmarks on the Avenue of the 9th of July, the most important ones are Teatro Colón and the Obelisk. It reminds us a bit of Paris with the Champs Elysees and Place de la Concorde. The about one kilometer walk also offers art, fountains and spectacular architecture.

Modern buildings and skyscrapers of Puerto Madero, Buenos Aires

The modern part of Puerto Madero is right up there with the innovative architecture of top European and American cities. Some skyscrapers are more than 50 floors high and contain apartments, offices and even hotels.

Some buildings are connected by a walking bridge between two high glass towers reflecting their surroundings. Other construction keep it a bit simpler with combination of concrete and glass wall alternating floor by floor. The shot from the foot of these tower with different colors are our favorite pictures. The entrance of the Hilton hotel looks almost like a mirror.

Monument of the Spaniards at the Buenos Aires Zoo

At the Buenos Aires Zoo on Av. Sarmeinto, which is a roundabout, you find a victory monument dedicated to the Spaniards. The high marble column covered with statues is very expressive. Muscular naked men make strange gestures. The walls contain many women, also half naked. The facial expressions are strong, you feel the emotions. A farmer with his wife and baby trying the escape the violence of war. A giant female angel with wings rules.

A collection of monuments on Tribunales, Buenos Aires

Tribunales is a square in the center of Buenos Aires, you can easily get there by metro. Around the square you find several historical monuments like the Teatro Colón, the Escuela Presidente Roca, the Widex Argentina with its modern office building behind the tower and off course the Palace of Justice.

On the grass fields were art exhibitions related to music, dance and photographers. Our preference went out to the statue of a ballet couple. The sculptures of the buildings were also very impressive. We were surprised to see all this top architecture because we never heard of this square or saw any information in a tourist guide.
