General Impressions of St. George, Grenada

Grenada is one of the poorer islands of the Caribbean. The capital, St. George is a multitude of colorful houses. In the bay you find some fisher boats and a three master sail-ship. There are a few shops in the port but as soon as you go deeper into the city center, all commercial activities are basic with the local population as customer target group.

All tough many cruise ships visit the island, passengers book organised tours to see nature and beaches. From the hills of this spice island, you have excellent views on the city, industrial area and sports fields. We advise you to take a taxi or book an excursion to visit the island, on your way back you can still explore the city.

Grenada is één van de armste eilanden in de Caribbean. De hoofdstad St. George is een verzameling van gekleurde huizen. In de baai vind je enkele vissersboten en een driemaster. Er zijn toch enkele toeristenwinkels maar van zodra je verder de stad intrekt, zijn alle commerciële activiteiten gericht op de lokale bevolking en basis behoeften. 

Alhoewel er hier veel cruiseschepen aanmeren, boeken de meeste passagiers excursies naar natuurgebieden en stranden. Op de heuvels van dit kruideneiland, heb je uitstekende zichten op de haven, stad, industrie en sportvelden. We adviseren een taxi te nemen of excursie om het eiland verder te bezoeken, op de terugweg kan je nog steeds de stad ontdekken.

Departing from Montevideo with the Celebrity Infinity

We have to admit that Montevideo was wet but we enjoyed it. From the top deck of the cruise ship we have an excellent view of the port and city. Below us we see the containers on docks waiting for cargo ships and a large vessel is receiving raw materials. A little bit further in port there is a ship cemetery. Old half sunken vessel are left in the water at a designated part of the port. No wonder Montevideo has issues with the quality of the sea water.

 On the port banks you see a tall green building in the shape of a sail. It is similar to the seven star hotel in Dubai, the "Burj Al Arab". This is no coincidence, our guide explained that an Uruguay architect designed this building and also contributed to the design of the top hotel in Dubai.

We moeten toegeven dat Montevideo heel nat was maar we hebben er toch van genoten. Van op het bovenste dek van ons cruise schip hadden we een uitstekend zicht op de haven en stad. Onder ons staan containers gestapeld, wachtende op een cargo schip. Een groot vaartuig ontvangt een lading grondstoffen. Een beetje verder is er een scheepskerkhof. Oude half verzonken boten liggen in het water op een toegewezen plaats in de haven. Het is niet verwonderlijk dat Montevideo problemen heeft met zijn zeewater kwaliteit. 

Aan de oevers van de haven zie je ook een hoog groen gebouw in de vorm van een zeil. Het is gelijkaardig aan het zeven sterren hotel "Burj Al Arab" in Dubai. Dit is geen toeval want onze gids vertelde dat de Uruguayaanse architect van dit gebouw ook heeft meegewerkt aan het ontwerp van het top hotel in Dubai.

Leaving Buenos Aires on a cruise ship

Buenos Aires port is mainly focused on cargo. There is a cruise terminal but it is all a bit primitive. About 100 cruise ships a year dock here and most of them are small. After check-in and security control, you exit the building again and are transferred to the cruise ship in busses. A strange feeling driving through a port between high walls of containers.

We enjoy the views of the port, containers, factories, liquid storage capacity and the skyline of Buenos Aires. We are on our way to Uruguay but will return to Argentina soon. Next to the Celebrity Infinity, there are also cruise ships from Ibero and Aida in port.

De haven van Buenos Aires is voornamelijk gericht op vrachtvervoer. Er is een cruise terminal maar het is allemaal een beetje primitief. Ongeveer 100 cruise schepen meren hier aan per jaar en de meesten zijn klein. Na de check-in en security controle worden we per bus naar het schip gebracht. Een raar gevoel om tussen hoge muren van containers te rijden. 

We genieten van de zichten op de haven, containers, fabrieken, opslag capaciteit voor vloeistoffen en de skyline van Buenos Aires. We zijn op weg naar Uruguay maar zullen snel terug keren naar Argentinië. Naast de Celebrity Infinity lagen er ook cruise schepen van Ibero en Aida.

Cruise ship encounters in the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland

The Cruise industry has become very popular and the market in Europe is growing. The most popular regions are the Mediterranean and Northern Europe. During our cruise in the Baltic Sea and the Gulf of Finland, we encountered 15 different cruise companies. We didn’t expect that there would be so many in this region. The most famous ones were Aida, Celebrity, Costa, Holland America, MSC, Norwegian and P&O.

De Cruise sector is zeer populair geworden en de markt in Europa is aan het groeien. De meest populaire regio’s zijn de Middellandse zee en Noord Europa. Gedurende onze Cruise in de Baltische Zee en de Golf van Finland, kwamen we 15 verschillende Cruise maatschappijen tegen. We hadden niet verwacht dat het er zo veel gingen zijn. De meest beroemde maatschappijen waren Aida, Celebrity, Costa, Holland America, MSC, Norwegian en P&O..
